James Van Der Beek and Roy From The Office Cast in Fox Pilot

Ever since Joshua Jackson found his way back to television, I've been waiting to see where James Van Der Beek would land next. Here's our answer: He's been picked to star on Fox's pilot Eva Adams. David Denman, maybe best known as Pam's ex-fiance from The Office, will costar.

The description of the pilot sounds . . . well, I'll let The Hollywood Reporter take it:

The hour-long project, from writer/executive producer Kevin Falls and Sony TV, is set at a sports agency and centers on Adam, an egotistic sexist agent who, under a witch's spell, turns into a beautiful woman so he can endure the harassment he's been dishing out.

Yeah, you really got to watch out for those sex change witches.

Anyway, Van Der Beek will play Connor, an agent, former frat boy, and good friend of Adam's. Denman's character is Paul, "a single dad reeling from a devastating divorce."

It's the second sports-themed pilot in a row for Van Der Beek; ABC's Football Wives wasn't picked up a couple of seasons ago. Don't think there were any witches in that one, though, so maybe that will make all the difference. What do you think?

Faux Music Video: Robin Sparkles, "Sandcastles in the Sand"

Oh, How I Met Your Mother. Not only did they bring us a legen - wait for it - dary kiss last night, they also premiered the long-awaited B-side to Robin Sparkles' "Let's Go to the Mall," a mournful breakup ballad called "Sandcastles in the Sand." We got a preview of the video last week, but that didn't make the ultimate reveal any less amusing. (Admittedly, my biggest laugh in the episode came from a well-timed Degrassi joke - but that could just be me.)

The overwrought, obviously-written-by-a-16-year-old ballad included lines like "Together we were going to travel the globe/from Alberta to Ontrario," an awesomely bad makeout session with a character played by James Van Der Beek, and cameos from Tiffany and Alan Thicke to bring real '80s cred. I think the best description might be Barney's from the episode: "You know, if you re-edit it, there's a tampon commercial in there somewhere." It also made me think of this Wilson Phillips video for the first time in a decade or so, which I suppose is something to be proud of.

First Look: Robin Sparkles, "Sandcastles in the Sand"

The moment that How I Met Your Mother's Robin first revealed that she was the Canadian teen pop sensation Robin Sparkles, complete with hit single "Let's Go to the Mall," was one of the show's truly classic moments - not to mention one of my favorite online TV spots of all time.

On Monday, Robin Sparkles is back - this time with a little help from James Van Der Beek as an ex-boyfriend of Robin's who happened to star in the video for the B-side to "Let's Go to the Mall," a wistful breakup ballad called "Sandcastles in the Sand." Variety already has the whole song streaming online, but I'm holding off on listening to it until Monday. It's probably silly, but I want to be at least a little bit surprised.

I did, however, cave and watch some of the video teasers that have been released via CBS and MySpace. From the peeking I've done, I can tell the videos have a great, dated vibe, with a dose of Heidi Montag beach video and an amazingly awkward Dawson-related make-out scene. Can't wait till Monday? James Van Der Beek Heads to How I Met Your Mother

Seriously, won't someone give James Van Der Beek a full-time job? At least the ex-Capesider is staying busy with some decent guest-starring roles - first on Ugly Betty, then on the guest-star-happy How I Met Your Mother. (Don't tell anyone, but I might be more excited about this than I was about Britney.)

Van Der Beek will pop up in an upcoming episode that revisits Robin Sparkles, Robin's past life as a Canadian teen pop sensation. E! reports that while it's not confirmed yet, it's likely that he'll play Robin's crush from back in the day, whom she runs into again (and re-crushes on).

The episode will also reveal the B-side to the Sparkes single "Let's Go to the Mall" - apparently a soulful breakup ballad, rumored to be shot on a beach in black-and-white. Man, I can't wait to see that video.

There's no date set yet for Van Der Beek's appearance, but with only a few weeks left in this TV season, we shouldn't have to wait long. Here's hoping the next time I write about this guy, it will be for a job longer than one episode. I mean, not to get all competitive, but Pacey's doing pretty well for himself.

Ugly Betty Rundown: Episode 4, "Grin and Bear It"

Let's get right to it: last night's Ugly Betty was a blast! That was mostly thanks to Rebecca Romijn who killed it as Alexis figuring out how to put on make up/dress/act/go to the correct bathroom as a woman. I guess then maybe she was in character when she was walking into Letterman yesterday? Ha. On the other hand, Betty herself was disappointing. It was just hard to believe that she would ever, ever do something like that. Okay, no spoilers just yet. Here are my thoughts on the episode:

Back to Alexis for a second. I love that she thought that she had to use up all the make-up in the containers to get herself ready for the day...and that she didn't wear a bra. Great Amanda line: "Friends don't let friends wear glitter before noon." Such the thing a guy would do in that situation. She and Daniel are so cute as brother/sister these days.
Laugh out loud moment when Alexis has this recommendation for Mode cover girl: "She's big! She's sexy! She's outrageous! Anna Nicole Smith!" Insert awkward silence here.
I've been looking forward to James van der Beek's guest starring stint since I heard about it over the summer. I just wish there was going to be more of him. Bring back Dawson!

As expected, Justin is trying to be all tough just like his dad, failing his classes, drinking beer and making out with girls. Ha. Like he wants to do that. I must admit that Henry was a little endearing as the math tutor trying to work in Justin's love for fashion.

John Cho was a great guest star too, bringing in some of the best lines of the episode ("chillin under Rihanna's umbrella-ella"). If we can't have Dawson, can we at least have more of him in upcoming episodes?
Have I mentioned how much I love Marc and Amanda? "What year were you born?" "1991." "You're 16?" "1992." "Other way."
Sigh, so about Betty lying and saying the bear attack story was hers. So out of character, even if Betty would start to do that, she would so stop herself halfway through. Her guilt was funny enough, but the whole plot line just didn't sit well.
The quest for the Tweety Bird tattoo begins? Will it be Warren Beatty? Ted Kennedy? Who could it be? Ha! Also must heart Amanda finding Ugly Willi. You just know that will become public later sometime.
Willi launching her own Mode competitor is a perfect plotline. Also, all the other Meade Publications editors were fabulous. Yay, can't wait to see what happens with that one.
So Henry is the baby daddy. Can that plot be done now? I know it's just when I started to like him a little bit, but in general he just bugs me. Wishful thinking, I know.

James Van Der Beek to Guest-Star on "Ugly Betty"

Dawson's back! All hail Dawson!
James Van Der Beek - alias: Dawson Leery - will be popping by "Ugly Betty" sometime in this upcoming season, one in a line of guest stars that will also include Gina Gershon and, it's rumored, Victoria Beckham.

What's he doing at Mode?
According to Kristin at E!, Van Der Beek will be playing the owner of fashion company Atlantic Attire. He wants to do business with Mode - but he has some problems with Alexis having had a sex change.

Will there be more Dawson in our TV future?
It's unclear. Van Der Beek was set to star in "Football Wives," ABC's adaptation of the British series "Footballers' Wives," but the network decided to pass. Maybe his "Ugly Betty" appearance is a sign that ABC wants to keep him close by. Hey, a "Dawson's Creek" fan can dream.

"Footballers' Wives" Remake Still in Play

I was pretty surprised back in May when ABC announced its fall schedule without "Football Wives," a remake of the British series "Footballers' Wives" (pictured above). Now, it appears the network is reconsidering its decision to pass on the show: ABC has extended the options on its stars, including Gabrielle Union, Lucy Lawless, Ving Rhames and James Van Der Beek, which is typically a sign that a project is still in the running.

Maybe, the Hollywood Reporter suggests, ABC's sudden interest in the show can be explained by the fact that other networks - Fox and NBC among them - seem to be ready to snag it for themselves if ABC passes for good. After all, between "The Starter Wife" and "Army Wives," it's been a pretty great summer for wives on TV. If you want to see the original, it's airing this summer on BBC America.

Meanwhile, another British import finally has its leading man. Jason O'Mara - who was initially supposed to play the title character in "Marlowe," another pilot ABC passed on - now will star in David E. Kelley's remake of "Life on Mars," about a police detective who mysteriously travels back in time. I watched some of that show's first season on BBC America last summer and really enjoyed it, so I'm curious to see what happens with the American adaptation.

TV Tonight: "Criminal Minds"

The network that airs the Super Bowl can try to give one of its shows a ratings boost with prime placement immediately after the big game. (It's what vaulted "Grey's Anatomy" into the spotlight last year.) This year, CBS has chosen "Criminal Minds," a drama about a group of elite FBI agents (led by Mandy Patinkin's Jason Gideon) whose unravel the behavior of notorious criminals and stop them before their next strike.

James Van Der Beek (aka Dawson) guest-stars on Sunday's episode, which focuses on a serial killer or killers who quote Bible passages before murdering their victims. I've never seen the show, but I'm curious to see how it does in such a prime time slot. Watch the preview here and let me know: Will you be watching?
