Jake Gyllenhaal May Be Thrilling Audiences With Source Code

It seems so long since we've seen Jake Gyllenhaal on screen (2007 in Rendition, to be exact), so I'm glad that we're about to get a lot more of him. Next month we'll catch him in Brothers, then in the Spring all buffed up in Prince of Persia - and he won't be slowing down. Gyllenhaal is in talks to star in the sci-fi thriller Source Code.

The geeky-titled flick is about a soldier (ostensibly played by Gyllenhaal) who "wakes up in the body of an unknown commuter and is forced to live and relive a harrowing train bombing until he can determine who is responsible for it." These days it seems like Gyllenhaal is balancing his more emotional roles (like in Brothers) with some aggressive action flicks. I don't mind - whatever the genre, I'm just happy to welcome him back to the theater.

Movie Preview: Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia

I've been waiting on a trailer for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time for what feels like forever (more specifically, ever since those first photos of Jake all buff and shirtless).

The preview starts off strong, immediately taking us on an adventure quest that doesn't make any attempt to hide its video game origins. The effects are amazing, though I couldn't help snickering the first time Gyllenhaal speaks in a British accent. The good news is that it looks like the movie has some campy elements and a sense of humor along with all that in-your-face flair. We'll have to wait until Memorial Day 2010 for more, but to see the trailer, just read more.

Movie Preview: Portman, Gyllenhaal and Maguire in Brothers

Based on Susanne Bier's 2004 film and directed by Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father), Brothers tells the story of a young man (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) who "comforts his older brother's wife and children after he goes missing in Afghanistan." The older brother is played by Tobey Maguire and the wife is played by Natalie Portman, and from the looks of the trailer, the wife ends up getting very close with her brother-in-law, which causes some tension when her husband returns home from war.

For whatever reason, I have a hard time buying Portman as a mother of two but otherwise the movie looks intense and heart-wrenching. Brothers opens Dec. 4 and you can check out the trailer for it if you read more.

Gyllenhaal and Hathaway Reunite For Love

Well, for Love and Other Drugs, that is. Brokeback Mountain couple Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway are in talks to reunite for an adaptation of Jamie Reidy's nonfiction book Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman. The director is Edward Zwick who created Once and Again and who directed Legends of the Fall, Courage Under Fire, The Last Samurai, and Defiance among others. Here's more:

Reidy was a drug rep for Pfizer in the late 1990s who eventually wrote a memoir that shined a light on the practices of the pharmaceutical industry. Gyllenhaal will play the salesman, who begins a relationship with a woman who has Parkinson's (Hathaway) while on one of his sales calls. Their love story plays out in the political and social context of the time.

Aww. This one's going to break my heart a little bit, I can already feel it. And I really like these two together onscreen - what about you?

Jim Carrey and Jake Gyllenhaal Are Damn Yankees

Ha, I guess we picked a good time to talk about big-screen musical adaptations, because there's news about a new one heading our way. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Carrey will star in a modernized film adaptation of Damn Yankees, produced by the folks behind Hairspray.

The musical - which was produced for the first time in 1955 - centers on Joe Boyd, a married man "whose devotion to a hapless pro baseball team prompts him to make a Faustian bargain with the devil to help the team." Varitey continues:

He's transformed into slugger Joe Hardy, in exchange for Boyd's soul. Boyd can break the deal, but the deadline occurs during the World Series. For good measure, the devil engages Lola, a gorgeous lost soul, to seduce the slugger and seal his fate.

Gyllenhaal will play Boyd, while Carrey's the devil. It's the first time either of them has done a big-screen musical, though Gyllenhaal's showed us his singing chops on SNL before and Carrey had that whole Cuban Pete number in The Mask. Jake Gyllenhaal to Become the Prince of Persia for Disney

According to Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will star together in a film adaptation of the Prince of Persia video game for Disney. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mona Lisa Smile, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time will be a "fantasy adventure" in which "Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world."

Jake Gyllenhaal in a fantasy adventure for Disney. . . Thoughts?

Would You Go See a Donnie Darko Sequel?

There's a crazy bit of news floating around today that the 2001 cult classic, Donnie Darko might get a sequel. According to one story, this new film would pick up "seven years after the first film when little sister Samantha Darko and her best friend Corey are now 18 and on a roadtrip to Los Angeles when they are plagued by bizarre visions."

Daveigh Chase, who originally played Donnie's sister, is on board and but that's about it from the original Darko team.

The first film earned a devoted following due to writer-director Richard Kelly's knack for eerie, strange storytelling. Dorm room conversations have never been the same ever since Kelly tantalized his fans with philosophies about time travel and alternate universes. Seriously, people have spent a lot of time breaking down this movie! It's hard to imagine these folks would be happy with a sequel without his involvement or at the very least his blessing.

Earth Day Movie Night: Environmental Disaster Movies

As I was researching environmental disaster movies it was interesting to see how long this idea has been around that humans could destroy the earth simply by taking its resources for granted. Long before Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, filmmakers and fiction writers were clearly aware that manmade pollution has a chance of bringing about an apocalyptic scenario here on earth. So, in honor of Earth Day I present a few movies that, in their own over-the-top ways urge audiences to heed the warnings of the day lest we succumb to a future worse than what these films imagined.

The Day After Tomorrow
This is probably the first cautionary global warming tale that springs to most people's minds when you think "environmental disaster." In The Day After Tomorrow the rising temperature of the planet speeds up the disaster effects some real-life scientists predict will happen eventually. The film stars Daniel Quaid as a sexy - wait for it - paleoclimatologist who tries to save his son (Jake Gyllenhaal) and the other survivors stuck in New York after the city is flooded and then frozen over by the rising ocean. The movie is all CGI effects and silly one-liners but the action is heart-pounding and Quaid and Gyllenhaal are easy on the eyes.

Logan's Run
Before Star Wars wowed audiences with stellar effects, there was the campy and slightly corny Logan's Run. The film is based on the bestselling science fiction novel of the same name that was written in 1967. The movie takes place in the future (23rd century to be exact) where the earth has basically been destroyed by overpopulation and pollution. A few survivors live in a domed society which would be rather lovely if it weren't for the fact that everyone must die at age 30 (population control). The movie stars Michael York (a.k.a. Basil from Austin Powers) and actually won an Academy Award for visual effects at the time. It's a bit dated, but is still an interesting look at a scary dystopian future.

Soylent Green
Similar to Logan's Run, Soylent Green was released in the '70s, but this time takes us to the year 2022. Now that overpopulation and global warming have led to a world where food like fruits, vegetables, and meats are rare, most of the population lives off "soylent green" processed food. Charlton Heston stars in this classic thriller about the potential for corruption when resources are scarce and humankind is desperate.

Because this year was such a good one for dramas, there were many opportunities for some of Hollywood's best dramatic actors to shine, making these polls rather challenging! There have to be winners, however, so here are the actor and actress you've deemed the best of 2007.

Best Dramatic Actor of 2007: Jake Gyllenhaal, Zodiac
The winner for this poll is technically Jake Gyllenhaal, with James McAvoy coming in second place. The most popular write-ins were Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin for No Country for Old Men, and Emile Hirsch for Into the Wild.

I myself chose Denzel Washington, as I thought he was fantastic in American Gangster, though it was hard to not vote for Christian Bale.

Best Dramatic Actress of 2007: Keira Knightley, Atonement
There's a lot of Keira love going around these days, and I must say I, too, think she does a beautiful job in Atonement. Angelina Jolie's performance in A Mighty Heart takes second place with Meryl Streep as a close third. A notable write-in vote went to Cate Blanchett for her performance in I'm Not There.

I simply had to vote for Angelina's powerful, controlled and heart-wrenching performance as Mariane Pearl.
