Two remake-related items making news today:
The makers of The Karate Kid remake have found their Mr. Miyagi in Jackie Chan.
The remake of East of Eden is really happening, as evidenced by the hiring of a director (Tom Hooper, who directed John Adams) and a screenwriter (Christopher Hampton, who wrote the Atonement screenplay).
Some thoughts:
My feelings about a remake of The Karate Kid starring Jaden Smith aside, Mr. Miyagi is many things Jackie Chan isn't: Calm, reasonable, wise, deliberate. Jackie Chan is an entertaining guy but let's face it, he's totally spazzy high energy. I mean, I might actually die of laughter if I find myself in a movie theater watching Jackie Chan seriously delivering the line, "Wax on.

Before seeing Kung Fu Panda, I guessed the plot went something like this: A big dopey Jack Black-voiced panda bear dreams of becoming a kung fu fighter but has to reach deep within himself to find the courage to do so. In the process, the naysayers that surround said panda will learn a little something about judging a book by its cover. And it turns out, this is basically the case.

Forbidden Kingdom gave kung fu fans the match up of their dreams, pairing up martial arts screen giants Jackie Chan and Jet Li for the first time. Together the two stars proved to be a formidable force at the box office, earning the top spot over the weekend with an estimated $20.9 million. Forgetting Sarah Marshall came in second place, earning $17 million.

- According to Pitchfork, The Cure is planning a documentary, but Robert Smith may not be working with Ashlee Simpson any time soon.
- It looks like Tom Cruise is getting yet more work: Hotel Rwanda director Terry George will most likely direct Cruise in a spy drama titled Edwin A. Salt, Variety says.
- ComingSoon is reporting that Seth Rogen wants Stephen Chow (Kung-Fu Hustle) to play Kato to his Green Hornet.
- NME has details on the separate but similar arrests of Lil Wayne and Ja Rule this weekend.
- Zap2It reports on Steve Guttenberg joining the cast of Jessica Simpson's military comedy Major Movie Star.
