Bella Donna: Ingrid Bergman

Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman was just beginning to make a name for herself in her native country when famous American producer David O. Selznick took note of her in the mid-1930s. Upon her arrival to Hollywood, Selznick had a few requests: tweeze the eyebrows, cap the teeth, change the name, and wear more makeup.

Say what? The determined actress didn't give in. Instead of taking the next plane back home, Selznick marketed her as the natural beauty - the wholesome girl next door.

Although most actresses of the 1930s and 1940s went heavy on the makeup, audiences were won over by Bergman's fresh look and allure. Unwavering in her passion for acting, when Ernest Hemingway told her she would have to cut her hair for her part in For Whom the Bell Tolls, she quipped, "To get that part, I'd cut my head off!"

Probably most well known for her role in 1942's Casablanca, her image was tarnished in the early 1950s when she became pregnant by a man who wasn't her husband. Eventually, things changed for the better. Bergman regained the adoration of the public, and won multiple awards for her acting abilities.

In her final role right before she died in 1982, she portrayed Israel's former Prime Minster, Golda Meir. In true form, Bergman refused to wear any kind of makeup; to get into character, she chose only to alter her appearance by wearing a gray wig, as she was still a natural blonde.

Bad Idea of the Week: Madonna Remaking Casablanca (?!)

It's only Monday morning and already we have a Bad Idea of the Week! And yes, this is entirely rumorific right now, but the mere thought of it is so appalling to me, I had to vent.

Madonna. Remaking. Casablanca.

Of course, the remake - possibly set in a modern war zone like Iraq - would be a starring vehicle for the Queen of Pop herself. Apparently, a "source" told the Daily Mail, "Madonna is talking about taking the Ingrid Bergman role for herself, even though Bergman was in her 20s when she played Ilsa and Madonna is nearly 50." Um. Yeah. To see what else there is to say about this,

Age is the least of the issues I'd have with Madonna taking the role of Ilsa in a remake of Casablanca. First and foremost I have a problem with the words "a remake of Casablanca." And in general, Madonna is simply all wrong for the part. Ilsa (Bergman) had that sweet, vulnerable face,] and a gentleness to her that I don't quite see Madonna achieving.

Again, this is totally just a rumor right now. But if it is true, it annoys me to think that just because Madonna wishes to reclaim some credibility in the movie world, she has to go after one of the most - if not the most - well-loved classic films of all time.

If this is true, I . . . I don't even have the words. I really don't. But maybe you do? What do you think about this idea?

Sarah Jessica Parker was in a bright dress from Prabal Gurung today for an I Don't Know How She Does It photo call at London's Soho Hotel. She arrived in England a few days ago, fresh off a trip to Russia, and was in white for a photo shoot at Claridge's yesterday. Following today's press event, she threw on some jeans and heels to take in the sights of the city. She also had time for a Twitter interview with Glamour UK. SJP revealed her fashion icons, saying she has, "So many. Ingrid Bergman, and the way Kate Moss dresses, and the Duchess of Cambridge!" SJP will head home to the US soon to promote the picture before its Sept. 9 release - stay tuned next week for our chat with the star! Early November will see Sarah Jessica travel to Australia for one last promotional leg.
