Designer Vicente Wolf Inspires With Tips From a Beautiful Bangkok Home

In his recent article in the Wall Street Journal, designer Vincente Wolf offered some beautiful inspiration and tips on how to give your home a taste of Thai aesthetic. By looking at the amazing home of Jim Thompson, an expat architect who revamped the Thai silk industry, Vincente offers practical advice on how to bring this calming and rich vibe to your home.

"Play with height." Vincente says it's integral to have a balance of different heights and focal points in the room.
"Casual is in the intent." A traditional floor plan and elegant furniture make the space feel livable.

"Sometimes it's not what you add, but what you take away." Being able to edit yourself is key when designing a Thai-inspired space.
"Brighten dark finishes with shimmer." Slight glittery accents can bring a sense of strong emotion to a room.

"Multitask with trays." Putting a tray on a plus-size ottoman can turn it into a practical coffee table.
"Neutral and nervy need each other." Balancing bright and neutral hues makes everything in the space feel easy and relaxed. While pops of color can make all the difference, Bangkok beauty does not intend to overwhelm.

Want to wean yourself off of overdoing the caffeine without sacrificing your sanity? Then look no further than your local yoga studio. Warming up your body in the morning helps the natural release of endorphins, says Desiree Bartlett, a Los Angeles-based yoga instructor.

Not only does yoga do the body good, the energy you cultivate in a yoga class stays with you all day long. "There is a natural gauging of energy and we release old thoughts or judgments we no longer need," says Bartlett. "Through this practice of steadying the mind and observing the breath, the mind stays present, sharper and clearer because it is no longer reviewing the past or making to-do lists for the future."

Simple Ways to Make Sure Your Bike Fits Your Body

The merry month of May is also National Bike Month. So hop on your bicycle to celebrate. Don't worry if it has been years since you pedaled about town, because the good thing about cycling is ~~it's just like riding a bike~~ that you never forget how to ride one. However, the proper fit can make your return to two wheels much more pleasant. Here are few simple ways to size up your cycle.

Bike Height: Let's start with the bike itself. You should be able to stand over the bike without making contact with the top tube while both feet should be on the ground. If this is not the case, the bike is probably too big for you, and this can compromise your safety.
Seat Height: Adjust the seat of the bike so when you're pedaling your knee is just shy of being totally straight on the down stroke. Your knees should never lock! If this seems too simple, there are at least three different equations for determining seat height should you feel like crunching some numbers before your next ride. My inner geek finds these methods fascinating, but I just measure the height with my knees.
Saddle Comfort: Saddle is "bike-speak" for seat. You want a saddle that cradles your pelvic bones. You might think a cushy, soft seat is the way to go, but these can restrict blood flow due to compression and cause unwanted numbness. We like the leather saddles by Brooks. They're good looking, stiff, and mold to your bum.
Bike Helmet: You want your helmet snug but not too tight; if it's too small you can end up with a headache. You can customize the pads on the inside of the helmet to get a sweet fit. Do make sure the chin strap is not too loose; you should only be able fit one finger between your chin and the strap.

With over 31 beautiful spaces to browse and even more designers to meet, I left feeling incredibly inspired. Each space, whether it was a cramped elevator or a spacious dining room, was brimming with innovative design concepts. Although each space reflected the unique vision of the individual designer, they also worked remarkably well to create a cohesively stunning home. It's funny to think that just a few years ago, bamboo cutting boards were hard to come by. These days, the boards have taken their place as standard fare beside their wood and plastic peers. This material has endeared itself toall kinds of kitchen products, not to mention environmentalists, thanks to the plant's rapid growth and regeneration. Bamboo grows to a harvestable height in three to five years, as compared to decades for its tree counterparts, and it can regrow without replanting. It's also remarkably sturdy - 16 percent stronger than maple - yet gentler on knives than plastic. So while it holds up against daily chopping duties, it also resists deep gouges better than wood (and thus harbors less icky bacteria).
