The LA Lakers hit the court at the Staples Center for game five of the Western Conference Finals against the Denver Nuggets last night. The game was close, but the hometown team pulled out the big win. The audience was star-studded as usual including familiar faces like Zac Efron and Jack Nicholson while Ellen Pompeo and MIA had their men by their sides. Kim Kardashian excitedly twittered about heading to the game with Reggie Bush, though she was rooting for her friend LaLa's boyfriend Carmelo Anthony on the Nuggets. The Lakers have the chance to win the series in Denver tomorrow, but if they have to come home for game seven their celebrity good luck charms will be there to cheer them on.

For me, it wouldn’t be the holiday season without enjoying a festive cocktail or two. But unfortunately most of these drinks are heavy on calories and fat, which isn’t good when I’m trying to maintain healthy eating habits.

Instead of just sipping seltzer and missing out on all of the party cheer, I follow a few simple tricks to keep the holiday cocktails from showing up on the scale.

Start With Some Bubbly
Sorry, not champagne! On a night when I know there are a few drinks in my future, I like to start off with a glass of no-calorie seltzer (or still water). The bubbles from the carbonation give my stomach a full feeling, which helps me slow down and think about my food choices as the night progresses.

If I pace myself, I have better control around all of the delicious holiday goodies. Plus it's no surprise that the calories in cocktails quickly add up, so I also like to alternate seltzer between rounds.

Diet Tricks the Pros Tell Their Friends

Order It With Extra Ice
I like to order my cocktails with extra ice, since melting cubes dilute the drink. This creates more liquid, so I can sip longer without increasing my calorie intake.

Occasionally, I'll order my drink on the rocks, which takes me longer to consume than a mixed cocktail. Sometimes it lasts so long, I don't bother with a refill, which saves me calories in the long run.

Ingredients
1 banana, peeled and frozen
1/4 inch ginger, peeled and minced
1/2 cup mango slices, frozen

Entertaining in hot weather can sometimes be tricky. Case in point: you're serving a punch or pitcher drink like sangria and it will be sitting outside for a couple of hours. How do you keep it cold without diluting the drink?

If you use regular ice cubes, the beverage will definitely be watered down. That's why it's important to take the time to make special ice cubes! Instead of filling ice cube trays with water, fill with one (or more) of the ingredients that are in your libation.

Fruit juice, fresh-squeezed citrus juice, fruit purees, soda, and sparkling juices all work wonderfully. For a pretty flair, add a slice of fruit, berries, or an herb sprig or leaf to each ice cube.
