Get Free Sneak Peek at Tron: Legacy During Tron Night

The countdown to Tron: Legacy has begun! We're only 10 weeks away from the premiere, and to kick things into high gear, Disney has announced Tron Night 2010 which will give you a sneak peek at 20 minutes of footage of the film in IMAX 3D.

How do you get in on Tron Night? Starting today at 10 a.m. PST, you can get free tickets from select theaters (or the Tron website), then show up on Oct. 28, to get the first look at Tron: Legacy in all its IMAX 3D glory. Tickets can be picked up on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to check back for ticketing locations near you before you head out to wait in line.

NYC Movie Theaters Cite $20 IMAX Tickets as "Mistake"

I ranted last week about movie theaters charging $20 for entry into an IMAX 3D film, but according to AMC theaters, that price point was a mistake. In a Wall Street Journal article posted over the weekend, an AMC spokesperson says they'll be issuing refunds to anyone who threw down their hard-earned Jacksons to see Shrek Forever After. He says:

Unfortunately, a limited number of theaters posted incorrect pricing for Shrek Forever After, which we immediately corrected. Any guest who purchased a ticket at the incorrect price can visit guest services for a refund.

Although some moviegoers may have experienced a bit of sticker shock when they got to the theater, it didn't stop them from forking over their cash - Shrek took the top spot at the box office, forcing Iron Man 2 into second place.

Would You Pay $20 to See an IMAX Movie?

The day has finally arrived - tickets to see an IMAX movie have hit the $20 mark. Although the first film to charge that much for a ticket - Shrek Forever After - is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, there's no way I'm shelling out that much dough to see the movie on a bigger screen.

In fact, spending the $15 to see Avatar in IMAX 3D seemed like too much (however, you do get a lot of movie there), not because I'm cheap, but because sitting in a theater full of popcorn-chomping, cell phone-answering, sometimes snoring moviegoers just doesn't seem worth it. Especially since I never get the same 3D experience in IMAX as I do on a regular movie screen - it just doesn't translate well to the mega-size format. Maybe I'm jaded by my previous theater experiences, but seriously - $20? Have you hit your movie ticket price limit? Is an IMAX movie worth the $20 price?

Will You Wait Two Extra Weeks to See Harry Potter in IMAX?

Don't freak out - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is still scheduled to open nationwide on July 14, but for two weeks the only option will be to see the movie on your normal movie screens (with the exception of two theaters: one in New York and one in Los Angeles). Starting July 29, the movie will be available on IMAX screens nationwide.

Why the delay? Apparently it's a result of "the decision by Warner Bros. to push Potter from its originally scheduled November 2008 opening. The new July opening overlaps with Imax's month-long window dedicated to Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." The delay has some analysts worried that ticket sales will suffer. But then again, the movie "contains 12 minutes of 3-D footage that moviegoers can experience only through IMAX," so there will probably be plenty of folks who go to the theaters twice: once on opening weekend and a second time to experience the movie in IMAX.

IMAX Rip-Off: Does This Anger You?

Funny man Aziz Ansari has stumbled upon an IMAX controversy and he is mad. Ansari discovered over the weekend that the IMAX experience you pay an extra $5 for doesn't necessarily mean you get the giant screen.

Witness his rage:

I went with a friend of mine to see Star Trek: The IMAX Experience at the AMC Theatre in Burbank today . . . HOWEVER, we get in the theatre and its just a slightly bigger than normal screen and NOT the usual standard huge 72 ft IMAX screen. I was very upset and apparently this problem is happening all over at Regal and AMC theatres.

Basically, the company has a fancy digital-projection system that fits onto regular screens. Ansari hilariously refers to this regular-sized screen you pay extra for as "BULLSH*T IMAX" and is urging a boycott of all things IMAX-related. One reporter, who analyzed this deception almost a year ago, has this to say about it: "I object when anyone claims that two patently different things are the same. Where I come from that's known as 'lying.'"

I never knew that I could pay five extra bucks and only get a regular-sized screen. What about you? Does this outrage you?

Movies With Miya: IMAX Under the Sea

Last week, IMAX released its latest visual masterpiece, Under the Sea. The short 40 minute film enthralls its viewers with exotic underwater creatures from several areas of the Southern Hemisphere. Turtles, sharks, whales, and the more curious cuttlefish, seadragons and sea snakes come to life with the amazing 3D technology. We sat down with one of our favorite lil movie reviewers, Miya, to find out her take on the film:

Q: What was your favorite part of the movie?
A: When we saw the seals because they were so cute. And wearing the neat glasses.

Q: What didn’t you like about the movie?
A: When the sharks came.

Q: Did any parts scare you?
A: Yes the sharks and the cuttlefish, when they ate the little fish.

Q: Would you tell your friends to watch it?
A: Yes

Movie buff Miya, 4, has been watching films since she was old enough to follow the images in the Baby Einstein videos. Her favorite flick is the adored blockbuster, The Little Mermaid. This cute critic hopes to grace the silver screen some day!

Do You Like IMAX Movies?

Coming to an IMAX theater near you (unless you already live near the Grand Canyon): Grand Canyon: The Hidden Secrets.

Hollywood Reporter today writes that the 1984 National Geographic documentary will be distributed to "3-D to Imax and 3-D-ready digital theaters worldwide."

I've never seen this documentary, and I'm personally excited to check it out in 3-D IMAX. I've been to the Grand Canyon, but I wasn't able to hike around much and it'll be fun to see "the secrets." Also, I love me some IMAX movies.

Seven-Minute Scene From Dark Knight to Screen Before I Am Legend

Talk about manipulative! If this is true, it's either totally genius or completely evil. Or maybe both. Cinematical writes today that six or seven minutes of The Dark Knight will screen before IMAX presentations of the Will Smith sci-fi thriller I Am Legend. Erik Davis states in his post:

This won't be an extended trailer of sorts; from what we know, this will be an entire scene - they're calling it a prologue about the Joker. That's all we have to go on now, but if you planned on seeing I Am Legend when it hits theaters on December 14, you might as well skip over to the local IMAX and check it out there. No word on whether a new Dark Knight trailer will come attached to Legend in conventional theaters, but I've heard there may indeed be something.

Even if I weren't already planning on seeing I Am Legend this December, this gimmick would have totally roped me into it. Sneaky sneaks! Anyway, you have until December 14 to map out the closest IMAX theater to you.

Movie Preview: 300

I am partial toward movies that can entertain and educate me at the same time, whether about the British monarchy (The Queen) or an unsolved serial-killer case (Zodiac). That's my excuse for really wanting to see the epic new action movie, 300, in IMAX. I figure not only will it rule, but it might also teach me something about Spartan and Persian history.

Opening nationwide this Friday in both regular and IMAX theaters, the movie combines live action and animation for an effect that's sort of like Lord of the Rings meets Sin City. At the same time, it looks like nothing I've ever seen on film. 300 is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, who also wrote Sin City, but this time, he's zeroing in on the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, an epic match-up that pitted the Spartans against the much larger Persian army. The movie stars Gerard Butler (the Phantom in the recent Phantom of the Opera movie) and David Wenham, who I loved as Farimir in the LOTR trilogy.

Katie Holmes Kicks Off Her Birthday Weekend With Tom and Suri

Katie Holmes left the Greenwich Hotel in NYC last night in the company of her loved ones, Tom and Suri Cruise. The trio were reunited on Thursday when Tom returned to the Big Apple following an international media tour on behalf of his spy thriller, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The film, which opened in select IMAX theaters yesterday, is getting strong reviews from critics, especially for Tom's death-defying stunts. Tom has the weekend to relax and spend time with family before Monday's stateside premiere of his fourth Mission: Impossible installment. In addition to celebrating Katie's 33rd birthday tomorrow he's also getting an early holiday gift as well. Ghost Protocol is projecting to earn $12 million in ticket sales on a limited number of screens.
