Will You Wait Two Extra Weeks to See Harry Potter in IMAX?

Don't freak out - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is still scheduled to open nationwide on July 14, but for two weeks the only option will be to see the movie on your normal movie screens (with the exception of two theaters: one in New York and one in Los Angeles). Starting July 29, the movie will be available on IMAX screens nationwide.

Why the delay? Apparently it's a result of "the decision by Warner Bros. to push Potter from its originally scheduled November 2008 opening. The new July opening overlaps with Imax's month-long window dedicated to Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." The delay has some analysts worried that ticket sales will suffer. But then again, the movie "contains 12 minutes of 3-D footage that moviegoers can experience only through IMAX," so there will probably be plenty of folks who go to the theaters twice: once on opening weekend and a second time to experience the movie in IMAX.

What do you think? Will you wait the two weeks for the IMAX experience? Or are you going to see Potter opening weekend no matter what?

IMAX Rip-Off: Does This Anger You?

Funny man Aziz Ansari has stumbled upon an IMAX controversy and he is mad. Ansari discovered over the weekend that the IMAX experience you pay an extra $5 for doesn't necessarily mean you get the giant screen.

Witness his rage:

I went with a friend of mine to see Star Trek: The IMAX Experience at the AMC Theatre in Burbank today . . . HOWEVER, we get in the theatre and its just a slightly bigger than normal screen and NOT the usual standard huge 72 ft IMAX screen. I was very upset and apparently this problem is happening all over at Regal and AMC theatres.

Basically, the company has a fancy digital-projection system that fits onto regular screens. Ansari hilariously refers to this regular-sized screen you pay extra for as "BULLSH*T IMAX" and is urging a boycott of all things IMAX-related. One reporter, who analyzed this deception almost a year ago, has this to say about it: "I object when anyone claims that two patently different things are the same. Where I come from that's known as 'lying.'"

I never knew that I could pay five extra bucks and only get a regular-sized screen. What about you? Does this outrage you?

Do You Like IMAX Movies?

Coming to an IMAX theater near you (unless you already live near the Grand Canyon): Grand Canyon: The Hidden Secrets.

Hollywood Reporter today writes that the 1984 National Geographic documentary will be distributed to "3-D to Imax and 3-D-ready digital theaters worldwide."

I've never seen this documentary, and I'm personally excited to check it out in 3-D IMAX. I've been to the Grand Canyon, but I wasn't able to hike around much and it'll be fun to see "the secrets." Also, I love me some IMAX movies.

Seven-Minute Scene From Dark Knight to Screen Before I Am Legend

Talk about manipulative! If this is true, it's either totally genius or completely evil. Or maybe both. Cinematical writes today that six or seven minutes of The Dark Knight will screen before IMAX presentations of the Will Smith sci-fi thriller I Am Legend. Erik Davis states in his post:

This won't be an extended trailer of sorts; from what we know, this will be an entire scene - they're calling it a prologue about the Joker. That's all we have to go on now, but if you planned on seeing I Am Legend when it hits theaters on December 14, you might as well skip over to the local IMAX and check it out there. No word on whether a new Dark Knight trailer will come attached to Legend in conventional theaters, but I've heard there may indeed be something.

Even if I weren't already planning on seeing I Am Legend this December, this gimmick would have totally roped me into it. Sneaky sneaks! Anyway, you have until December 14 to map out the closest IMAX theater to you.

Movie Preview: 300

I am partial toward movies that can entertain and educate me at the same time, whether about the British monarchy (The Queen) or an unsolved serial-killer case (Zodiac). That's my excuse for really wanting to see the epic new action movie, 300, in IMAX. I figure not only will it rule, but it might also teach me something about Spartan and Persian history.

Opening nationwide this Friday in both regular and IMAX theaters, the movie combines live action and animation for an effect that's sort of like Lord of the Rings meets Sin City. At the same time, it looks like nothing I've ever seen on film. 300 is based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, who also wrote Sin City, but this time, he's zeroing in on the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, an epic match-up that pitted the Spartans against the much larger Persian army. The movie stars Gerard Butler (the Phantom in the recent Phantom of the Opera movie) and David Wenham, who I loved as Farimir in the LOTR trilogy.
