Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan Talk About the Future of How I Met Your Mother

CBS focused on its current shows during the Winter TCA, bringing out comedy How I Met Your Mother, which is currently in its seventh season. Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan were the only actors present today, but they had plenty to say, along with series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. They talked about what's next for Marshall and Lily and their new little family, Robin's recent revelation, and the perennial question about when we'll meet the mother.

Though no one gave us anything concrete about the mother, Bays insisted, "we know what the end game of the series is." Segel piped up to say that he was "so relieved when I found out there was an actual plan," and then joked about it, implying that it might be the apocalypse before we find out: "We have to see if the Mayans are right! It might be Dec. 21, 2012."
Bays and Thomas answered the question of whether Marshall and Lily are really moving permanently to their suburban home by saying that we're all about to find out. Thomas said that we're "going to see them deal with that" in the next few episodes.
Fans weren't the only ones irritated with the show faking us out with Robin's kids. Hannigan recounted, "You should have seen us at the table read. I was like, season pass delete!" But she said she was angry because she cared so much.
On the show's evolution, Thomas mentioned that they couldn't have done storylines like Marshall losing his dad in season one or two. For his part on that arc, Segel said that "it was a real honor" to be given the chance to play out Marshall's grief, and echoed that "it's a real honor when people ask the best of you."

Sure, seeing Katie Holmes dressed as a slutty pumpkin is awesome, but we're still excited to see the rest of the How I Met Your Mother gang in full Halloween garb for tonight's episode. Ted's sticking with his standard hanging Chad costume, while Barney goes shirtless (and seems to stir up trouble) and Robin goes for a hockey player getup instead of a sexier outfit. Check 'em out!

We were pretty excited for Katie Holmes's guest spot on How I Met Your Mother as the "slutty pumpkin" - aka Naomi, a love interest of Ted's - and now there are pictures to go along with the mental image! See Holmes in her Halloween costume (which doesn't look all that slutty to me, save for the open holes and low-cut top inside) from the year Ted met her, but lost touch soon after. Would You Rather See Robin With Barney or Ted on How I Met Your Mother?

Even though we put the possibility of Robin being the mother of How I Met Your Mother to bed a long time when she was dubbed "Aunt Robin," this week's episode revisited the idea. When Ted runs into his old girlfriend Victoria, she questions how cool the post-dating friendship between him and Robin and Barney actually is. Then Ted confirms that things can't stay the way they are, implying that something is about to change for the three of them.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Robin and Barney got back together, since it's been suggested that Barney will have to choose between her and Nora, but Ted's conclusion is so vague that it makes me think there's still a chance for him and Robin. It could also mean that Robin and Ted will stop hanging out as much because Ted can't move on with an ex in his life, as Victoria said, but I'm much more interested in the romantic options. If Robin is going to get back together with Barney or Ted, who would you rather see her with?

Katie Holmes Will Play How I Met Your Mother's Slutty Pumpkin

Victoria isn't the only memorable lady in Ted's past who's about to come back into his life. Katie Holmes will guest star on How Met Your Mother as the "Slutty Pumpkin" - a girl that Ted once encountered at a Halloween party and waits for, but fails, to see again each year after. We'll finally see her face on this year's Halloween episode when Holmes pops up as the notoriously nicknamed character. Fingers crossed that we get a flashback to the first Halloween they met or that she wears the same costume, because I'm pretty curious to see how one makes a pumpkin costume slutty.

Jason Segel on Why Kermit Made Him Cry and Being an Onscreen Dad

Jason Segel's career is in full swing right now: not only is he heading into the seventh season of How I Met Your Mother, but his film career is also thriving, especially with his big Muppets movie arriving this November. We caught up with Segel at the TCA, where he talked about becoming an onscreen dad, crying over the Muppets, and what terrifies him.

On The Muppets movie: I'd written the script for four years, and we did a table reading, and they brought the puppets for the first time. And we're all just sitting at a table, and all of a sudden, they brought out Kermit. And he said the first line that we had written, and I lost my sh*t a little bit, and started crying at the table read. I had to awkwardly ask them to stop filming. It was emotional, he's been my favorite since I was a little kid. It was a good day.

On whether a baby will change the How I Met Your Mother dynamic: It doesn't feel stunt-y to me, it feels more like a natural progression. My character's been married for five years now. That's kind of what happens - you have a kid, that's what happens next. . . . I think one of the things that makes the show feel true is that we're not trying to create an artifice of what people want to see, we're trying to do very naturally what our age is going through.

On whether he'd want to host an awards show like costar Neil Patrick Harris: I think Neil is incredibly talented and built for that. Neil is a natural-made host. The idea of hosting anything terrifies me. I'm not that talented.

On HIMYM's staying power: Prior to this show, my experience in television had been failure. I had Freaks and Geeks and Undeclared. And the thing about both those shows, is that I thought they were brilliant. So I removed the notion of success and longevity from quality. With that in mind, I didn't know what to expect. I went in trying to do the best job we could. The fact that now we're seven years in . . . it's longer than I've ever done anything. It's longer than any relationship I've had. It's longer than I went to any school. Sincerely, aside from my family, this is the longest I've known any group of people.

read more. On whether or not he's ready to move on from TV: I will stay with this as long as it feels great and fresh and as lively as it does. I don't have a distinction between television or movies or theater. I like to do things that make me scared. When I feel like, "I know I can do this," I lose interest. When I'm a little scared - and last year, they gave me father dying - and I had to do scenes of losing your father, I was scared to do them. And that was a very exciting feeling. That made me want to do the show forever. And one of the great things is that I think they recognize that in me, that I wanted to feel challenged. It was a very humbling experience to know that they thought enough of me to write me material like that. On being an onscreen dad: I feel so bad for whatever kids they hire. I'm so awkward. I'm like the Abominable Snowman from the Bugs Bunny cartoons. These poor, acting babies.
