Police Partners: Best Movie Cop Duos

Seems that whenever Hollywood has a crime to solve, it calls on a pair of mismatched officers for its hijinks. Take for instance Lethal Weapon, Starsky and Hutch, Rush Hour - and joining their ranks this Friday, director Kevin Smith's Cop Out, which features Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as partners. It's an unlikely pairing, but they're obviously not the first to try this formula. Can they stack up against their predecessors? Check out my list of favorites!

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost Working on American Road Trip Movie

Oh, how I love these guys! Anyone who has seen Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz is probably familiar with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's hilarious, satiric ways, and fans of the duo will be happy to know that they're back at work on another comedy. This time the premise and location are both distinctly American. Pegg wouldn't reveal too much to MTV Movies Blog, but he did say this: "It's called Paul and it’s a road movie about two British geeks in America."

Also, as a twist on their usual relationship in their films, Pegg won't be playing the one ranking on Frost's character all the time. According to Pegg, "I'm the bitch in this one. This time Simon’s the bitch!"

I love these guys. I was so looking forward to seeing Pegg soon in Run, Fat Boy, Run alongside Hank Azaria, but apparently the film's release date has been moved from October to March. One website has a supposed quote from Pegg stating that the weekend in October when Fat Boy was supposed to open proved too risky with Steve Carell's Dan in Real Life also coming out. I'm so bummed by this news! I was looking forward to watching that fat boy run next month.

What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday

All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue.

300
This movie won't be as captivating on DVD as it was on the big screen, but with the DVD, you'll get the inside scoop on one of 2007's most unusual films. An adaptation of Frank Miller's comic, 300 isn't going to win any screen-writing Oscars - we hope - for its portrayal of the lopsided Battle of Thermopylae. But it does break serious ground in terms of visual effects.

Be sure to check out some of the special features, like a commentary by director Zack Snyder, a gallery of production stills, and several featurettes including "The 300: Fact or Fiction?" in which "historians, authors, and filmmakers reveal how much of the film was based on fact."

read more Hot Fuzz I was fortunate enough to see Hot Fuzz in the theater and it is one hilarious movie. Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's follow up to their zombie movie spoof Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz is a parody of classic buddy cop movies. Pegg plays a London police officer who is so good at his job that his colleagues resent him, so he's shipped off to the virtually crime-free village of Sandford and paired with a bumbling partner (Nick Frost). Not surprisingly, it turns out there might be more afoot in Sandford then expected. The movie also co-stars a roster of talented Brits, including Bill Nighy and Steve Coogan. Lonely Hearts I posted the trailer for this movie back when it was coming out in theaters, and then I didn't hear much about it again, so now's the perfect time to check it out on DVD. Starring Salma Hayek, John Travolta, and Jared Leto, the highly stylized Lonely Hearts is based on the true story of two homicide detectives (played by Travolta and James Gandolfini) trying to track down the "Lonely Hearts Killers": a couple (played by Hayek and Leto) who lure their victims using personal ads. As an interesting tidbit, director Todd Robinson is actually the grandson of the real detective on the case.

Disturbia Wins at the Box Office Yet Again

For the third week in a row, Disturbia has prevailed at the box office, though whether this is something to write home about is debatable since the competition wasn't exactly fierce. Overall, box office sales were way down this weekend, with Disturbia drawing in just $9 million - and that's the No. 1 film.

Coming in second place was the latest thriller The Invisible, while Nicolas Cage and his scraggly hair brought in just $7.2 million for the "action-thriller" Next. Following Next was Fracture, Blades of Glory, Meet the Robinsons and Hot Fuzz, each bringing in unremarkable sales.

Of course, this is just the end of April. Studios should expect to see a huge difference when they break out the summer big guns, which should start this weekend when Spider-Man 3 opens nationwide. Goodbye Shia LaBeouf, hello Spidey and the gang.

Movie Preview: Hot Fuzz

I'm embarrassed to admit that I've never seen Shaun of the Dead, because after merely watching the trailer for Hot Fuzz, I'm ready to declare filmmakers Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright two of Britain's most valuable exports. In their new comedy, which hits theaters this Friday, April 20, Wright (who also directed the best fake trailer in Grindhouse) and Pegg are lampooning an oft-ridiculed world - small-town cops - with wholly original humor.

Pegg plays a London police officer who is so good at his job that his colleagues resent him, so he's shipped off to the virtually crime-free village of Sandford and paired with a bumbling partner (Nick Frost). Not surprisingly, it turns out there might be more afoot in Sandford then expected. The movie also co-stars a roster of talented Brits, including Bill Nighy and Steve Coogan. Paul: The Buddy Movie Goes Extraterrestrial

In Paul, British comedians and frequent costars Nick Frost and Simon Pegg reunite for the first time since 2007's Hot Fuzz. Frost and Pegg costar as Clive and Graeme, two sci-fi fanboys on vacation in America to catch Comic-Con before heading off on an alien-inspired road trip.

The buddies are having the time of their lives stopping by UFO-related landmarks, but their trip takes a momentous turn when they come upon an actual alien. Named Paul, the little green guy is trying to escape a department of the government that has held him captive for a few years and now wants to harvest his brain for research. Voiced by Seth Rogen, Paul is a CGI creation in the form of the big-eyed, big-headed aliens humans have imagined for years.

Hot on their trail are a number of trackers: Jason Bateman is a Men in Black-type with very little sense of humor, Bill Hader and Joe Lo Truglio are a couple of clueless agents who don't know they're following an alien, and David Koechner is a redneck out to get the boys for being foreign. The ensemble of funnymen and cameos by other favorites, like Jane Lynch and Blythe Danner, adds another dimension of fun.

However, Paul is not necessarily all it could be. To find out what I liked and what I didn't, just

read more. Rogen pulls off a feat of making Paul a real character, imbuing him with more than just a voice. Paul has distinctive, laid-back mannerisms and a friendly, full personality that makes him more than just a cartoonish afterthought. On the flip side, Kristen Wiig isn't used to her full potential. As Ruth, a religious zealot who has her mind blown by the existence of Paul, the very funny actress is squandered. As Ruth embraces a new lifestyle of doing what she wants, Wiig gets one running joke: cussing. Though her phrasing is often very creative, it gets old fast. Paul caters to a very specific audience, to a fault. If you're not attuned to all pop culture references, you may wonder why the rest of the crowd is tittering at a seemingly insignificant line. In general, the movie is often funny, though never truly hilarious. And once you get to the climax and final act, the jokes drop off in favor of wrapping up the story. At that point, it becomes clear that the plot is paper thin, and you get bored waiting for the resolution. The problem Frost/Pegg fans may have with this installment is that it's grossly inferior to Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. In those films, the concepts and plots are both more inspired and edgier. While Paul shares the brand of humor of its predecessors, it's only a mildly satisfying fix for fans.

Movie Preview: Attack the Block

If you're a fan of Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, then the latest from producer Edgar Wright might be right up your alley. In Attack the Block, a group of British inner-city kids are forced to band together when their neighborhood falls under alien attack. Like Shaun of the Dead, the film looks like a horror movie spoof with plenty of one-liners. Cue references to Ghostbusters and 9-year-olds ready to throw down.
