Hope Davis Replaces Julianne Moore in Hillary Clinton Role

As much as I like Julianne Moore as an actress, I had a tough time picturing her as Hillary Clinton in the HBO Films/BBC Films movie The Special Relationship (is it sad that whenever I see that title I think of Hugh Grant, as Prime Minister, saying that to sleazy US President played by Billy Bob Thornton in Love Actually?). Now, due to a scheduling conflict, Moore has pulled out of the project and Hope Davis has taken her place.

This makes much more sense to me, as Davis resembles Clinton a bit more, and I think she is such a versatile, engaging actress, and she deserves more roles and more recognition. I can't wait to see what she does with this one. She'll be working alongside Dennis Quaid as Bill Clinton and Michael Sheen (reprising his role from The Queen) as Prime Minister Blair. Written by the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of The Queen, Peter Morgan, the movie "chronicles the unique and sometimes turbulent political relationship between newly installed British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.S. President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s."

Movie Preview: Synecdoche, New York

Charlie Kaufman's directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York, has been generating positive buzz ever since it premiered at Cannes this year. Time Magazine calls it "A miracle movie," while Variety claims it is "a wildly ambitious and gravely serious contemplation of life. The picture exerts power and artistic mystery." If this new trailer is any indication, I am starting to see what all the fuss is about.

Philip Seymour Hoffman leads a hugely talented cast (including Michelle Williams, Samantha Morton, Catherine Keener, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hope Davis and many more) in this story in which "[a] theater director (Hoffman) struggles with his work, and the women in his life, as he attempts to create a life-size replica of New York inside a warehouse as part of his new play."

Synecdoche, New York will start with a limited release on Oct. 24. To check out the trailer,

Movie Preview: Ryan Reynolds in The Nines

If you're a Ryan Reynolds fan like I am, you may have been waiting for The Nines to come out ever since you first heard about its Sundance buzz back in January. On August 31, we'll get our chance to see the super-cute Reynolds starring opposite the ever-amazing Hope Davis as well as Elle Fanning and Melissa McCarthy (Sookie from "Gilmore Girls"!).

The Nines is an intriguing drama with existential themes. Reynolds, Davis and McCarthy each play three different characters in separate tales that come together somehow in the end. First-time director John August is known mostly for writing screenplays like Big Fish, Charlie's Angels (both movies) and Go, but the movie received some healthy reviews from Sundance. According to Variety, for example, "There's more than enough intelligence, intrigue and performance dazzle to make this an adventuresome gizmo for grownups - albeit one whose complexity presents marketing challenges." TV Tonight: "Six Degrees"

The story of ABC's "Six Degrees" could really be a metaphor for this whole sorry TV season. The show had the right pedigree ("Lost" creator J.J. Abrams) and the right time slot (right after "Grey's Anatomy"), yet it never gained traction with viewers. So ABC yanked it from the schedule before the holidays, revamped it, and trotted it back out in March, only to pull it again two episodes later. The final chapter of the saga starts tonight, when the first of five unaired episodes will arrive where so many canceled shows have gone this season: the network's online video player.

I'm glad that the episodes starring Josh Charles (Dan Rydell of "Sports Night") will end up somewhere besides the editing room, but I have to wonder if anyone will be watching. Will any of you "Six Degrees" fans see the show through to its conclusion online? Or has ABC moved it around so much that you're beyond caring now? TV Tonight: "Six Degrees"

"Six Degrees" was supposed to be the new hit show of the season. It had pedigree - stars Hope Davis and Campbell Scott; executive producer J.J. "Lost" Abrams - and the plum post-"Grey's Anatomy" time slot. Instead, the show about six New Yorkers discovering their connections to each other faltered in the ratings, and ABC yanked it from the schedule in early November.

Tonight, it's back with the first of a batch of previously unaired episodes - and, potentially, a shot at another season. Dumping the show in the TV wasteland of Friday nights isn't exactly a vote of confidence, nor is the fact that "Six Degrees" wasn't among the many that ABC already promised to renew. Still, a chance to finish out the season on TV is more than many of this season's yanked shows got (I hear you, you other three "Day Break" fans).

Viola Davis is getting major kudos for her role in The Help, but she also definitely deserves attention for her fashion daring tonight in an incarnadine slit-up-to-here Pucci gown. She's keeping things simple but sexy with smudgy smoky eyes, some major false lashes, and creamy mauve lipstick. Octavia Spencer Says She's "the Same, Old, Ordinary Girl" as She Takes Home Two Big Wins

Octavia Spencer hit the press room at the Critics' Choice Awards tonight fresh off her best supporting actress and best ensemble cast wins. The actress has been receiving lots of accolades for her role in The Help this award season, but when she stopped by to chat with reporters after accepting her latest honors, she said she's "still the same, old, ordinary girl from Mississippi" that she was before becoming a household name. She also promised we won't be seeing any pies come out of her own kitchen anytime soon during her chat with reporters.

On how much life has changed since The Help came out: "The biggest change is, three days a week I work out with a trainer, because otherwise I would half ass it. Honestly, my life hasn't changed that much. I am grateful that I had this opportunity and I am getting to bigger rooms and more substantive roles, but I'm kind of glad I'm still the same, old, ordinary girl from Montgomery, AL."

On the women who inspire her: "The women that inspired me growing up as an actress are Sally Field, Sissy Spacek, Cicely Tyson, Esther Rolle, Jessica Tandy, and . . . Allison Janney, [who] I got to work with in real life, is one of my idols. And there are a lot of young brilliant actors in the movie, Jessica Chastain being one of them, Viola Davis being one of them. So to be in a comedy of all of this brilliance is more than an actor can hope for."

On her own kitchen skills: "Honey, I don't bake at all, I don't cook at all. I'm not a cook, you guys do not have to worry. Even though they said they're serving Minnie's chocolate pie for dessert in there, I would stay far, far away from it. But that's just me."

On The Help's impact: "We've done many Q&As all over the world, actually, and there are a lot of people who were moved by The Help. I was moved by The Help when I read the book and then when I saw it for the first time it was with Tate Taylor, the director, Viola Davis, and her husband. And I was moved by it. I think everybody likes rooting for the underdog, and the fact that it was part of our nation's history - we've grown so much - is a testament to how far we've come, but we still have a lot of work to do."

The Help Cast Celebrates Their Critical Success and Talks Late Nights Bonding Over Moonshine

The cast of The Help earned the best ensemble cast win tonight at the Critics' Choice Awards, and the ladies from the film were in a reflective mood as they talked about taking on the sometimes-painful movie, as well as bonding off the set over moonshine and fried butter. Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, Allison Janney, and Ahna O'Reilly were among the actresses who stopped to talk with reporters about the latest honor for the film, which has already scored several awards and nominations.

Octavia on how much prejudice still exists today: "We've made progress, but there is still progress that has yet to be made, and thank god for a film like The Help that is making us talk about it."

Viola on the debate the movie sparked: "I agree with Octavia . . . I felt it absolutely once the film came out, that people were outraged that these types of films are still being made, and the wonderful thing that came out of that was just great discourse. I hope that this kind of encourages to keep making films with a cast that looks like this: a racially diverse cast, a female cast, because I think that would be the biggest statement of progress in and of itself."

Allison on getting into character:"I would say that Tate [the director] was wonderful in getting us all down there early before we shot and making us watch this wonderful documentary called Eyes on the Prize that really opened our eyes to remind us of what a terrible time that was in our history in America . . . I'll never forget it. It was truly inspiring . . . and just the heat down there, that played a huge part in just making us feel very much a part of the South. That's a whole character itself, 113 degree weather . . . There was so much that we went through to try and re-create that time in history . . . it made for a really delicious Summer of just love, and pain, and everything that it should be."

Ahna O'Reilly on taking characters from a beloved book: "I think we all were so excited about the book and loved it, but definitely there was an enormous amount of pressure. You know, so many people had read the book and were attached to their ideas of these characters, but you know, it's such a wonderful team of women and there was so much chemistry that we didn't have to create. I think, probably, from the get-go everyone would agree that we knew it was something special whether a lot of people saw it or not. And thankfully, they did."

Viola on the friendships they formed off set: "Thank god for moonshine, lemon pie, fried butter on fried bread . . . I think we needed to cut loose on this one. I mean, we needed to escape from this time period to remind us that we weren't really in this time period. And, really, being in Greenwood, MS, instead of on a sound stage in Los Angeles, we were kind of forced - happily forced - to be with each other and have a lot of laughs with apple-pie moonshine at night. And I think that's what you see. That love, that bonding that happened during those fabulous times. That's when we really built an ensemble."
