High Line Music Festival: Designed by David Bowie

When David Bowie curates, I listen. You'll understand why when you see the just-announced lineup for the new music festival that the eternally cool singer has put together.

Scheduled for May 9 through 19 in New York City, the 2007 H&M High Line Festival will feature Bowie darlings the Arcade Fire, as well as the Polyphonic Spree, Secret Machines, Air, Deerhoof, and comedian Ricky Gervais. (These guys must be friends, judging by Bowie's very funny guest appearance on "Extras.") According to the High Line web site:

The ten-day mash-up of music, film, comedy, visual art and performance will highlight all of David's favorite artists. The best of the best.

The inaugural 10-day festival will take place in venues along the High Line, New York City's biggest and most prestigious public works project in over 50 years. The High Line is a raised set of train tracks on New York City's Westside, long since abandoned, and now being transformed into an enormous, elevated public park running from The Meat Packing District to 34th Street.

Tickets for the festival go on sale this Friday, March 30, and a portion of the proceeds benefit Friends of the High Line.

Strike up the band; the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is ready to go! A time-honored tradition for many families, the nationally televised parade is the perfect mode of entertainment for multiple generations who've gathered together for the holiday. This is the 85th year Macy's has put on the parade that winds its way through New York City, and it looks to be bigger and better than ever. With 15 gigantic balloons - including new friends such as Paul Frank's Julius, the Aflac duck, and a new character created by Tim Burton, as well as longtime favorites like Kermit the Frog, Mickey Mouse, and Spider-Man - 27 floats, 800 clowns, and 1,600 cheerleaders, there's plenty to entertain fidgety tots.

I got a behind-the-scenes look at the helium-filled wonders tonight, as their handlers - the large balloons require up to 100 handlers each! - got them ready for their moment in the spotlight. Under the direction of a new grand marshal, the parade gets underway bright and early on Thanksgiving Day. Ashley Olsen was out and about in NYC today with wet hair, a BlackBerry in her hand, and a collection of books and magazines in her arms. The designer, who recently split from Justin Bartha, was by herself, but her sister, Mary-Kate, hit the town last night with a male companion by her side. The sisters may have gone their separate ways this afternoon, but they have been spending lots of quality time together in the Big Apple for both work and play in recent weeks. The pair partied and rocked their individual style at the Met Gala last Monday and also toasted the Tribeca Film Festival before its launch. On the business side, they have their fast-growing fashion empire to focus on. The duo were named "America's Next Billionaires" in Newsweek's last issue, soon after the headlines that The Row now generates an estimated $12 million per year. The high-end collection is just one of several stylish business ventures the Olsens are pursuing. Not only do they own more affordable clothing lines, including Textile Elizabeth and James, but they also recently announced their plans to launch a shopping site called StyleMint.

Thor: Enter the Realm of Excitement

It may not be Summer quite yet, but the arrival of Thor hammers it in: blockbuster season has arrived. Chris Hemsworth plays the title character, the good-looking, gloriously built God of thunder who's in line for the throne in the mythical realm of Asgard. On the night that he's supposed to be inducted as king by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins), an invasion from the enemy Frost Giants derails the festivities. Thor secretly organizes a retaliation, and when Odin has to rescue his sons and friends from the unsuccessful mission, he angrily punishes Thor by banishing him from his home.

Exiled to Earth, the disoriented God is hit by the van of scientists led by Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Jane and her colleagues (Stellan Skarsgard and Kat Dennings) bring Thor to the nearest town, where he has to assimilate with the mortals. Needless to say, his huge ego and fish-out-of-water behavior draws attention to him and produces lots of laughs. It's Thor's ability to succeed on different levels - action and comedy, specifically - in a sleek, energetic package that makes it a supremely entertaining movie. Though Thor boasts some major thespian credibility like Hopkins and Portman, it's the newcomers who really impress here. Hemsworth is a major find as Thor; his character could be a beefcake warrior of few words, but Hemsworth brings a robust personality to the part. He's convincing in each of Thor's phases: as the arrogant prince, the despondent stranger in a strange land, and the impish charmer. Likewise, Tom Hiddleston is fantastic as Loki, Thor's jealous and conflicted younger brother. He's more than just a one-dimensional villain; Hiddleston makes Loki's turn to the dark side understandable.

Thor pulls off a victory I wasn't expecting: the dramatic, action-filled scenes in the fantasy realm are just as entertaining as his misadventures on Earth. The battle scenes are exciting, and thankfully brief, an unusual feat for this genre. And at a time when 3D is being overused on the big screen, this is a movie that's enhanced by it. The visuals are awe-inspiring, especially in the stylized world of Asgard.

The only thing that doesn't reach its full potential in Thor is the romance between Thor and Jane. There's an adequate amount of chemistry between Hemsworth and Portman, but the love story is rushed, and the intensity of their connection is unconvincing. But other than that, Portman adds to the movie's overall comedic success, as does Dennings as her dry, sassy sidekick.

It's the rare movie that can please a wide audience, but Thor is one of those films. No scene drags on too long, the dialogue and plot are engaging, and it all adds up to the high amount of fun that a Summer action movie should be.

A Day in the Life of Lee Schrager

Lee Schrager is the mastermind behind the nation's biggest food events, including the upcoming New York City Wine and Food Festival. Here's what he did on Saturday, Aug. 20.
6:00 a.m.: I was up and ready for the day in East Hampton, waiting for my yoga instructor to begin our morning class. I’ve been doing yoga at the house for the last three Summers with Corey, who is the ex-boyfriend of my regular yoga instructor in Miami. I’ve been coming out to the Hamptons since 1980, when I worked in the cheese department of the first Dean & Deluca on Newton Lane, and used to spend my days at the beach with Edie Beale (of Grey Gardens fame). We've rented this same house for the past six Summers - it’s a gorgeous run-down farm house on a great piece of property, literally three minutes from the center of town.

7:45 a.m.: I headed over to Levain Bakery in Wainscott to pick up some goodies for our house guests. I try and keep away from Levain if possible, as it’s truly addicting. This morning, I waited in line behind Russell Simmons, who literally buys every one of the mini brioche I wanted. I ended up bringing home some scones, blueberry muffins, Nutella-stuffed sourdough rolls and, of course, some walnut chocolate chip cookies for later in the day.

10:00 a.m.: I went over to Bridgehampton for a meeting at the Gilt City Hamptons House regarding the afternoon’s Burger Blood Bath that Ben Leventhal, from NBC Feast, is producing. I am the Chief Lifestyle Advisor for Gilt City and the Hamptons House is a project I proposed months ago, that includes bringing out over 30 of the nation’s top chefs to cook at the house this August. The morning meeting was to discuss set-up, weather back-up plans, sponsorship fulfillment, and registration.
