Do You Think Maybe the He-Man Movie Might Not Suck?

The long-gestating live-action film version of beloved '80s cartoon series He-Man has found a director in Kung Fu Panda helmer John Stevenson. The He-Man movie - which also now has the title Masters of the Universe - will mark Stevenson's live-action directorial debut, and apparently he came on board for the project when he visited the Mattel headquarters and "was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff." According to him, "There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into. It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

So, there's a vision of some sort here. . . right? Kinda? It might not be totally ridiculous and embarrassing? Personally, I think as long as they don't put a blond pageboy wig on Brendan Fraser and call it a day, I'll give this project the benefit of the doubt for now.

Still, I've said it before and I'll say it again: We've gotten Transformers and we're getting G.I. Joe and He-Man. Why is it all so much boy stuff? As long as we're on this ride, where is my Jem and the Holograms movie?

Who Should Play He-Man?

I recently brought you news that there will be a live-action film based on the 1980s cartoon series "He-Man." A while ago, rumors swirled that this movie was being made with Brad Pitt purportedly taking the lead role.

While I wouldn't object to that, I think there are other people who could also do the role justice, namely: The Rock, on whom I have a painful crush. Or perhaps Josh Holloway (Sawyer on "Lost")? I've brainstormed a few options for possible He-Men, so tell me who you could envision playing one of the Masters of the Universe.

He-Man to Be Live-Action Film, 300-Style

First Transformers. Then G.I. Joe. Now He-Man. Variety is reporting that "He-Man," another beloved '80s cartoon based on a toy line, will be turned into a live-action film, employing visual effects similar to those in 300. Here's more:

The franchise has been reimagined by the producer and the writers and pitched to Mattel as a classic good vs. evil battle, using the kind of visual effects strategy employed in "300." A warrior is touted as the last hope of a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Many of the characters in the Middle Earth-like universe will be informed by the mythology created in the four different cartoon series done since the 1980s.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think this news is awesome. I loved these TV shows as an '80s kid and it's an interesting choice to go live-action in the vein of 300. However, Transformers, G.I. Joe and He-Man... but no "She-Ra" (on her own, outside of the He-Man movie)? No "Jem and the Holograms"?! Where are my '80s ladies? It's obnoxious that there's a Bratz movie but no movie based on "Jem and the Holograms." Any of you Buzz readers into screenwriting? It's time for a girls' '80s cartoon uprising! Who's with me?
