Just yesterday I was talking about how Chris Pine is blowing up after the big success of Star Trek, and his name is already making headlines again this morning. Pine will likely be the next actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan in the next film adaption of the popular Tom Clancy novels. A few actors have taken on the role in the past, and other names have been attached to the project before, so let's take a look at the evolution of Jack Ryan - with a few of my own suggestions for who could take on the role.

Harrison and Shia Could Reunite For Indy 5

The details are still coming together, but we may not have seen the last of Harrison Ford in his Indiana Jones fedora just yet. At the Deauville Film Festival, Ford mentioned that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are working on yet another Indy sequel, saying, "The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again."

Though Ford didn't exactly announce Shia's LaBeouf involvement, the young actor also recently mentioned that Spielberg was working on a sequel when he was promoting Transformers 2. While nothing is set in stone, it's hard to imagine that Ford would reject a script from Lucas and Spielberg after so many years of working together. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull scored big at the box office, but many of you thought the sequel was unnecessary. So now the real question is - are you on board with yet another Indy movie?

Ford and McAdams and Abrams - Oh, My!

This movie news is just delightful. I probably would have never thought to put together the names of these Hollywood folks, but now that I see it, I think it's pretty awesome. Harrison Ford and Rachel McAdams (though she's still "in negotiations") will star in Morning Glory, a comedy that will be produced by JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot production company. Notting Hill director Roger Michell will direct. Here's more:

McAdams would play an aspiring news producer who tries to save a failing morning show by getting control of its feuding anchors. Ford will play one of the anchors, and the female thesp playing the other anchor will be set shortly.

There's still that other female anchor to cast, so is there any way to make this cast even better? I vote for Kristen Chenoweth (can you imagine her battling it out with Harrison Ford?!). Any other suggestions?

Movie Preview: Crossing Over

Despite some moments that seem a little overwrought, this trailer for Crossing Over (not to be confused with the TV show about talking to dead people) is one of the most riveting previews I've seen in a while. It looks a bit like Crash (several storylines weaving together in various ways), but with the subject matter being illegal immigration (and what it means to be an American and what's right and what's wrong, etc. etc.).

The other intriguing aspect of the trailer is the impressive cast: Harrison Ford, Ashley Judd, Ray Liotta, Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Summer Bishil (Towelhead) and Alice Eva.

Oh, did I forget to mention Jim Sturgess?

Harrison Ford Goes from Indy to Crowley

After the major success of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, one might be wondering, "What's next for the adorably endearing Harrison Ford?" (Besides recently winning that Guys Choice Award there.) Well, this just in, folks: Ford will next be seen in the dramatic film Crowley. Zap2It has more:

The project is based on Geeta Anand's The Cure, which focuses on John and Aileen Crowley, whose two children have a rare genetic disorder. Ford would play the maverick researcher who comes to their assistance.

"Real people are the best kind of movie heroes," [producers] Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher say in a statement. "We have had great success with true stories that have an uplifting message. The Crowleys' story is both entertaining and true. Using humor, warmth, and drama, it shows that people with courage can make a difference."

From Indiana Jones to "maverick researcher." I love me some Harrison Ford and this project sounds like it'll bring us the tender, heartwarming Harrison. Aww. . .

These questions are pretty easy, but the whole point of Indiana Jones is to have fun, so I couldn't include anything too mentally taxing! So? Are you jonesing to begin?

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: A Great Summertime Kickoff

There's a lot to enjoy about this fourth installment of Indiana Jones. It's fun, silly, adventure-filled and completely entertaining in ways we don't always get from movies these days, with the greatest parts coming straight from the marvelous imagination of Steven Spielberg. Plus, it's a summertime blockbuster that doesn't totally rely on CGI which feels practically old-fashioned - and I mean that in the best way possible. The performances are strong and overall it's a sequel that doesn't embarrass itself or the whole franchise. It's refreshing and, honestly, it's a relief.

Sure, there are aspects I didn't like about it, but the experience of seeing this movie with a theater full of fans and happy moviegoers pretty much trumps any quibbles I have. The story finds our beloved Indy caught up with a group of Soviets (led by one fierce Irina Spalko, played by Cate Blanchett) trying to find the secrets behind ancient crystal skulls which are said to have been shaped by some kind of higher power (or other-worldly power). They need Indy's mad archaeologist skillz (and wide base of experience) to do this and one way of luring him in is via Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), who they've taken captive. Marion gets in touch with Indy through her son Mutt (Shia LaBeouf). That's the basic gist of things but I wanted to leave plenty for you to discover at the theater, so for more of just my thoughts, read more.

As with last summer's Simpsons Movie, Indiana Jones is not just a highly anticipated movie, it's a highly anticipated movie event. There are plenty of people who will see it no matter what anyone says, and there are plenty of people, too, who are determined to like the movie no matter what. I understand this fanaticism, and though I don't personally feel it about this Indiana Jones movie, I had a great time watching it. At the same time, there are things I disliked, too. Most of all, there is some bizarre, random supernatural stuff at the end that struck me as out of place and totally hokey (and not in the fun way, in the annoying way).

But you know what? It's still a lot of fun. There is much pure, innocent joy to be found sitting in a jam-packed theater, clapping and whistling at the first glimpses of Indy's shadow and Marion Ravenwood's bright smile. There's a goofy pride that comes from laughing along with everyone else at the film's nods to previous films. It is an event, and in some ways it's the quintessential summertime movie event: a fantastically fun time for kids, and a sweetly nostalgic trip for adults.

Basically, you're probably going to go see it anyway, and I think you should.

Buzz In: What's Your Favorite Film Score?

Recently the filmmakers behind the upcoming Incredible Hulk movie held a panel discussion at the New York Comic-Con to promote the film to its key audience: fanboys. When director Louis Letterier declared the musical score for Hulk was, "Star Wars good" he reportedly got booed by the audience.

It cracks me up that, to a certain group of fans it is sacrilegious to ever suggest anything is as good as (or - gasp! - better than) that famous, ominous tune. Then again, to some degree, I can understand that kind of passion.

A great musical score not only helps to set the tone of a movie, but when done right audiences will forever associate the sounds with the emotion of a film. For example, the sound of a clacking typewriter will probably always make me think of the subsequent piano music and then the overall sense of agony and guilt associated with Atonement, a score that ended up nabbing the Oscar.

Of course, it's hard to look at Harrison Ford without the boisterous Indiana Jones score cuing up in my brain immediately. And while I hardly remember a single line from Driving Miss Daisy, that whimsical old-timey score is clear as day in my head.

2008 Kids' Choice Awards: And the Kids' Choices Are . . .

Big stars! Lots of slime! Silly good times had by all! It can only mean one thing: Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards were back yet again over the weekend, and I have to say, I'm impressed with the turnout. Big stars walked the orange carpet to promote big films, including Harrison Ford and Shia LaBeouf, who showed up to get the kids pumped for the return of Indiana Jones.

However, to this crowd of tweens, no one - not even Harrison - could hold a candle to the superstar bonanza that is Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Apparently the screams were off the hook (as the kids say) when those acts took the stage. Oh, and then there was the moment when Heidi Klum was hoisted into the air on a cable and, as Reuters put it, "had to pop balloons with spikes attached to the derriere of her jumpsuit." That's fierce.

As for the actual honorees, Cameron Diaz took home the Wannabe Award for being a role model and raising awareness about environmental issues, which is certainly a step up from her previous Kids' Choice Award for burping. To see who else the kids voted for, just read more.

Sam Raimi Is Bringing Back Jack Ryan

Earlier this week I called Sam Raimi a busy guy which is, it turns out, an understatement because now there's news of yet another ambitious Raimi project: the return of Tom Clancy's CIA hero Jack Ryan. Previously, the role of Jack Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger) and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears).

Jack Ryan is not dashing like James Bond, nor is he a highly trained killing machine like Jason Bourne. He is a "thinker" who usually relies on his CIA analyst skill set to save the U.S. from evil. These new films reportedly might focus on a younger, less established Ryan, and casting rumors have been swirling around Ryan Gosling for several months.

I'm happy to hear that someone as capable as Raimi is working to bring this character back. While Clancy can get slightly heavy-handed with his patriotism, I'm a sucker for suspenseful spy thrillers and plots that include the piecing together of CIA intelligence. What do you think?
