2009 Comic-Con: Sherlock, Wild Things, The Box, and More!

Today at Comic-Con, Warner Bros. provided a closer look at some of its most-anticipated upcoming films. In a packed 90 minutes, we got sneak peeks at Where the Wild Things Are, The Book of Eli, The Box, Jonah Hex, and Sherlock Holmes. The panels were chock-full of celebs, which made for a lot of fan excitement and some interesting questions (including multiple marriage proposals for Megan Fox and Cameron Diaz). Here are my thoughts:

Where the Wild Things Are: We didn't get a full panel and Q&A for this one, but the clips were more than enough to satisfy fans who have been dying to see more of Spike Jonze's newest project. I was so excited to find that the scenes were just as touching and mesmerizing as as the film's trailer. Basically, I can't wait for Oct. 16!
The Book of Eli: This morning I showed you all the trailer for the movie, but having the cast on hand was even better. Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman seemed to have a great relationship - the perfect balance of mutual respect mixed with a lot of goofing around. When asked what it was like to work together, they quipped:

Washington: "It was like good sex. We had a ball together. Sometimes we do the scene as English gentlemen . . ."
Oldman: "Sometimes you do it with the slang African-American, sometimes it's the English gentleman, sometimes it's the thespian . . . like good sex."

It should be awesome to see these two duke it out on the big screen. Oh, and Oldman also revealed that he'll start filming the next Batman next year - adding "But you didn't hear it from me."

Movie Preview: Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes

It would be an understatement indeed to say that we haven't seen Sherlock Holmes quite like this before. As this new trailer shows, Guy Ritchie's big screen Holmes story is full of action, violence, and good-looking people. There are quippy lines a-plenty (it is Robert Downey Jr. in the lead role and Guy Ritchie in the director's chair, after all) and elements of silliness - all of which rounds out to be quite a funny and heart-poundingly tense mystery.

As you'll see in the preview, this Holmes is more of a roguish fighter than a contemplative guy chewing on his pipe. Together with his partner Watson (Jude Law), the detective engages "in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England." Sherlock Holmes opens Dec. 25. The Latest to Join Sherlock Holmes: Rachel McAdams

These two make a pretty magnificent pair, don't you think? Last we heard about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie, Jude Law was getting set to play Watson to Robert Downey Jr.'s Sherlock Holmes. The latest casting news is that Rachel McAdams will join the two men. The Hollywood Reporter explains:

The movie. . .takes its cue from a forthcoming comic book that producer Lionel Wigram wrote as a selling tool for a new take on the classic character. The concept sees Holmes as more adventurous and less stuffy than previous screen incarnations and mines more obscure character traits.

McAdams plays Holmes's enigmatic love interest, Irene Adler, a character who appeared in Doyle's 1891 A Scandal in Bohemia. While the character only appeared in that one story, McAdams' personage would return for any possible sequel.

I cannot wait to watch RDJ and Rachel McAdams, two darlings of the film world right now, play off one another. It's such a genius pairing.

More Sherlock Holmes News: Robert Downey Jr. to Play Holmes

Man, I love me some Robert Downey Jr. casting news, and this one's got me all giddy. Variety is reporting that RDJ will play Sherlock Holmes in Guy Ritchie's reimagined version of the old sleuth's story (not to be confused with the comedic Sherlock Holmes story starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell). The article has more details:

Downey emerged as an action star with Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes also will take advantage of his physical skills as the character displays brawn as well as brains.

The basis for the film is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic tales, but also the comic book Sherlock Holmes.

Now that I'm envisioning it, this seems like the best possible casting decision for Ritchie's project, especially since, as Variety notes, the image idea of RDJ as action star is still fresh in our minds. He can play Sherlock, and many of you think he should be the one picked to portray a young Hugh Hefner - is there anything this guy can't do? Seriously. I'm asking you.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows - Haven't We Already Played This Game?

Giving the people more of what they want is usually the principle behind sequels, and it definitely holds true for Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but a good sequel takes what works and makes it better. Though this follow-up to the 2009 hit retains the chemistry of Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, it disappoints by failing to add anything to the franchise. This time, Holmes is as intelligent, stubborn, and incorrigible as ever, but Watson is trying to evolve by getting married. Unfortunately, Watson's marital status is just about the only development for either of the main characters.

This time, we follow Holmes and Watson as they trace a series of crimes to Holmes's infamous nemesis Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris), who has been leaving clues around Europe that he's laying the groundwork for war. Holmes is hot on his trail, while a batch of assassins are hot on Holmes and Watson's trail, leading to a game of cat and mouse that could be fun to watch, if the story was told in an engaging way. Unfortunately, plot points are withheld until the last moment, and the twists are so convoluted that you're lost along the way. It's a shame, because the film could have been a satisfying sequel, but instead it feels like a half-baked shadow of its predecessor. To find out what I mean, just keep reading.

RDJ and Guy Ritchie Bring Their Lovely Ladies to the Sherlock Holmes Premiere

The Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows premiere in LA last night was full of famous faces. Rachel McAdams stunned in a Marchesa gown after traveling to the West Coast from London recently. She's been spending time in the UK with boyfriend Michael Sheen, and while he didn't join her on the red carpet for this event, Robert Downey Jr. and Guy Ritchie did have their leading ladies by their sides. Susan Downey showed off her growing baby bump amid news that she and RDJ are expecting a boy. Guy's girlfriend, Jacqui Ainsley, who gave birth to her first child with Guy in September, wore a gorgeous red dress to accompany her directing man. The movie hits theaters next week and will be up against Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol at the box office.

Rachel and Robert Get Back Into Character For Sherlock Holmes

Rachel McAdams laughed between takes on the set of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows in London today. She was joined by her costar Robert Downey Jr., who was almost unrecognizable in a clever disguise, and the film's director Guy Ritchie. The trio are working on reshoots for their upcoming sequel, due out Dec. 16, though there was no sign of the movie's other leading man, Jude Law. Robert recently wrapped his role as Tony Stark in The Avengers and shared the exciting news that his wife Susan Downey is expecting their first child early next year. Meanwhile RDJ's not the only one expanding his family, Guy became a new dad again on Sept. 5 when his girlfriend Jacqui Ainsley gave birth to a son.
