Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "All You Need Is Love"

It's Valentine's Day in Seattle, which means the doctors are scrambling to get their romantic plans together on this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy. Callie plans a special surprise for skeptical Arizona, while Mark tries to get out of babysitting duty so he can take Julia out on a date. Derek and Meredith, on the other hand, just need to find somewhere to go for a little, uh, "alone time."

On the other end of the spectrum, Lexie is having a "woe is me" moment as she pines for Mark, and Jackson and Karev are also left dateless. No one's in hotter water than Owen is, though: he and Cristina contemplate some big questions about the future of their relationship, and Teddy has some choice words for him when Owen tries to rekindle their friendship. Everything is hunky dory in Mere/Der land now that they've got Zola back, except for one problem: they can't have sex with Zola in their bed. This shouldn't be an issue for a couple living in a huge house, but they're thwarted at every turn, often by Lexie, who seems to be staying up into the wee hours watching surgical procedures on TV. Lucky for them, they wrangle Lexie into babysitting for Valentine's Day so they can finally get it on without complication.
As for Little Grey, when she's not whining about her sad, empty life, she's blatantly pining for Mark. When Mark gets candid about his V-Day plans with Julia, Lexie tries to save face and says she has a hot date. To make matters worse, Mark and Jackson's new BFFship just puts her in an even more awkward position, both in and out of the hospital. After a sweet moment with Mark over a box of chocolates, she finally gets the courage to tell him how she feels, but Jackson's at the apartment making a romantic steak dinner for Mark in exchange for some study help. I firmly believe that these two are going to end up together, but the Grey's writers sure are making us sweat it out.
There isn't much drama for Callie and Arizona this week, other than Callie's very sweet romantic surprise. When she tells Arizona to pack warm clothes, Arizona assumes a camping trip is in store and starts panicking. It's not until she sees the interior of Derek's trailer - which Callie has borrowed for the night - that she realizes that they won't be sleeping under the stars. On a side note: why haven't Meredith and Derek thought of using the trailer for their own conveniences?
Owen and Cristina are still on shaky ground after their epic fight at Zola's birthday party, and the tension is palpable. I cringed for Cristina when Owen saves her from getting run down by the runaway van but doesn't so much as give her a hug after he pushes her out of harm's way. It seems to be a breaking point for the couple, and shortly afterwards, Owen tells a shaken Cristina he's moving out.
As if his relationship troubles aren't enough, Owen also gets an earful from Teddy. He turns to his old friend for comfort, asking Teddy if they can make amends over drinks, but Teddy is nowhere near ready to be chums again. In fact, she tells Owen that she hates him and will never forgive him for putting the hospital ahead of her needs when Henry passed away. She drives the point home by telling Owen not to address her unless it's work-related. Ouch - and for a second there, I thought maybe these two could rekindle their old flame with Cristina slowly fading out of the picture for Owen. Owen and Cristina do share a moment at the end of the episode, but do you think their relationship can ever bounce back?

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "If/Then"

Last year we had the Grey's Anatomy musical episode, and this season it's the alternate-reality episode. That's right: as Meredith ponders on the veracity of the phrase "meant to be," we get to see what could have been - or in this case, what was always destined to be. Though this is a filler episode if I ever saw one, it's still pretty fun to see the characters go down different paths (well, except for Jackson, who pretty much stays the same).

What we're treated to is a preppy-pink Meredith, a geeky Karev, and an even edgier Yang just to name a few. There are also plenty of shout-outs to characters from past seasons, like Izzie, George, and Burke. Ready to break down all of the differences? Just

One of real-life Meredith's biggest questions is what could have been if she'd had a happy childhood, and that's the jumping-off point here. In the alternate universe, Mere is brought up by her mother and Dr. Webber (she even calls him "Dad"), and as a result, she's positively sunshine-y. She's also sort of spineless, needing to depend on mommy dearest to help her wrestle surgeries away from Cristina, who, of course, isn't her "person" here, because Cristina is too dark for her to relate to. So who is her crutch? Why, that job is now being filled by April, who is dating Charles Percy! Remember him?
One of the few dudes Meredith has never hooked up with on Grey's is Alex, so he's her perfect suitor in the alt-world. He's also nerdy-nice (complete with hipster glasses) and claims that Meredith has changed his bad-boy ways. If there's one lesson in the alt-world, though, it's that people are who they are no matter what. For Alex, we learn this thanks to his illicit affair with April - who is still claiming to be a virgin! I know that Alex and April have already had a romantic tryst in the real world, but do you think this is a hint that they'll get back together?
The biggest surprise coupling isn't even Meredith and Alex, though: it's Callie and Owen! They're married with a trio of cute kids, though there's plenty of trouble in paradise. Owen's grappling with his PTSD (with some help from his "buddy" Teddy, heh), and Cristina is the only one who's privy to his frequent outbursts. Meanwhile, Callie clearly makes eyes at Arizona throughout the episode, even inquiring about Arizona's lunch date.
Bailey gets a serious alt-makeover, and it's all because of Ellis Grey? At least it seems that way, as the usually confident Bailey has been replaced with a meek, self-questioning woman with long braided hair. Webber is still in her corner to a certain extent, but without him as Chief, she's unable to come into her own and shine the way she does in the real world.
Lexie also has a jarring makeover in the alt-world: what Meredith gained from a happy childhood is Lexie's loss. We learn that Thatcher committed suicide, and combined with her mother's death, Lexie is driven to cocaine addiction, dreadlocks, and a plethora of tattoos. She still makes a connection with Jackson, who cares for her in the hospital, but it's Mark who becomes her knight in shining armor when he finds her after she escapes from the hospital. Symbolism here? I think so.
However, Mark isn't exactly unattached. Though he's mostly out of sight for this episode, he's part of a big twist at the end. Derek and Addison are still together in the alt-world, but it's made Derek into "McDreary." Though Addison is pregnant, it's clear that these two aren't in a blissful relationship. To that regard, it's kind of a relief when we learn that Addison's baby is actually Mark's, which leaves Derek to - wait for it - have drinks with a scorned Meredith at the bar. In a throwback to the series pilot, they share some tequila (and maybe more, from what I inferred.)

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "This Magic Moment"

This week's episode of Grey's Anatomy picks up two weeks after the most recent episode, and a lot can happen in 14 days for some doctors. Meredith and Derek are settling into their life as full-time parents with Zola, and Bailey and Ben are back together in a big way. On the other hand, Teddy still hasn't come to terms with Henry's death, and Cristina is still suffering for it.

It's a very typical Grey's episode: a major surgery that's affecting all of the doctors (this time, it's conjoined twins), mixed in with some drama and a little bit of plot development. No major game-changers, but it's still a solid episode. Let's break it down when you

Could Meredith and Derek be any cuter with Zola? They're the epitome of happy new parents now that they've got Zola back. They're all about baby talk and home videos, and Meredith even lets Zola observe her very first surgery. After all the strife that Mere and Der went through during the first half of the season, it's so fun to see them all smiles and genuinely happy with their little girl.
Not only are Ben and Bailey back in action, but Ben is also ready to take things to the next level. Bailey balks when Ben asks her to move in with him and is so panicked that she uses Meredith to deflect the subject while the three of them are in the OR. Ben doesn't let up, though, and Bailey becomes so preoccupied that she makes a mistake - right in the middle of a speech about how she never trips up. It's obvious that Ben has a hold on Bailey, and she eventually admits that she's worried the relationship will "blow up" if it moves too quickly. Ben reassures her with some very sweet words about her son, Tuck, and Bailey starts to warm up to the idea.
Teddy's still processing Henry's death, or not processing it in this case. She constantly pages Cristina, forcing her to recite Henry's fatal surgery, step by step. Everyone else thinks she's being unfair, but Cristina assures her colleagues that she can handle it. The same can't be said for April, who breaks down listening to Cristina going through her procedure for the umpteenth time. Luckily, Cristina finally gets through to Teddy, who comes to terms with the fact that Cristina did everything she could.
Mark's girlfriend continues to rack up the brownie points, and it's clear that it's important to Mark to get the approval of Derek and Meredith. All the talk about Julia just continues to be torturous for Lexie, though, who clearly just wants to get back together with Mark. How sad is the moment at the end of the episode when Lexie thinks Mark is talking to her but he's really on the phone with Julia?
Arizona's controlling behavior during the conjoined twins procedure gets Karev all riled up, which gives Webber an opportunity to swoop in and steal Karev's spot right out from under him. Alex is understandably angry and spends most of the episode moaning and groaning about Webber being a shark. Once the surgery is over, Webber admits that his actions were wrong and confides that he's scared of growing old and being demoted to two minor surgeries a week. Feeling guilty, Karev hands over another surgery to Webber - and Webber immediately starts trash talking Karev for being a pushover. Even though Webber plays the tough act, I think there was a lot of truth to his speech about his fear of getting older.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Suddenly"

Grey's Anatomy left us in the lurch before hiatus, what with Henry's shocking death and Meredith and Karev getting into a car accident. This week, we finally experience the aftermath, in an episode that's unsettling and emotional, with one glimmer of hope that comes in at the end.

The hardest part of the episode is watching Teddy continue on with her surgery, and being the only doctor who still thinks Henry is alive. It makes the moment when she hears the news all the more heart-breaking (and Kim Raver turns in an excellent performance). Let's break it all down when you

The good news for Meredith and Karev is that they're mostly unharmed in the car accident. The bad news is that the same can't be said for a family that's now spilled out into the road. Throughout the episode, Meredith bonds with the family's eldest daughter, and we watch her coming-of-age as she witnesses her parents' deaths and takes the reins as the head of the family.
Owen is adamant about keeping Teddy in the dark about Henry so that she can finish her surgery. Poor Cristina really gets the brunt of the work when Teddy demands that she help her with the surgery. Though she initially says no, Cristina manages to keep it together and deflect Teddy's comments about Henry (sometimes at April's expense). To make things even more dramatic, Teddy is whooping and dancing around the OR while Cristina is just trying to keep a brave face on. As soon as their work is done, Cristina breaks the news to Teddy, who is obviously devastated.
Mark and his new lady friend are still going strong, and Lexie's dismay is thinly veiled. Derek is skeptical when Mark wants to call her in to help with a surgery, but he quickly changes his mind when he sees how skilled she is. Postsurgery, Derek even calls her a "keeper" with Lexie in earshot. The icing on the cake is that she and Lexie share a moment after the procedure and Lexie realizes that she's warming up to Mark's new flame. All that said, I've been waiting forever for these two to get back together, and I don't see Lexie going down without a fight.
Bailey and Ben are moving closer to rekindling their relationship, with the only kind of flirting Bailey knows: being sassy. She softens at the end of the episode, though, telling Ben she doesn't need quite as much "space" as she did before. I'm rooting for this coupling; you?
Just when I stopped wondering if we'd ever see Zola again, Derek and Meredith get a very welcome surprise: their baby is back! The social worker assures them that Zola is theirs for good, which means no more legal drama and just seeing these two as parents. Color me excited.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Dark Was the Night"

It's a critical time for our favorite doctors this week on Grey's Anatomy, as more than one cast member faces a life-threatening situation. In the last episode we left Henry coughing up blood, and this week his fate is in the hands of Seattle Grace's finest, but you may be surprised to find out who performs Henry's surgery. Meanwhile, Callie and Jackson's careers are on the line, as Teddy tries to save their patient after post-surgery complications.

After several weeks of waiting, Meredith and Derek finally get word about Zola, and sadly, it looks like the results are not in their favor. However, this story line is completely overshadowed by all the heartbreaking events that lead to more than one surprising death. It's a tear-jerking, emotional roller coaster of an episode that left me at the edge of my seat. Were you along for the ride? Let's break it down!

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Heart-Shaped Box"

The doctors of Seattle Grace take a stroll down memory lane this week on Grey's Anatomy when George O'Malley's mother, Louise, returns as a patient. While it's been awhile since George's mere name was uttered through the hospital halls, as Alex so insensitively points out, her presence brings forth tender memories that most of the doctors would rather not think about.

A miracle also arrives in the form of a box - a pumping heart in a box, to be exact. The live organ is harvested for transplant but becomes sort of a career whisperer for Cristina and Jackson. With Mama O'Malley back in the mix and the powers of the heart in the box, I thought this episode lightly tugged on the heartstrings but could have been way more emotional. Though, I really loved how Callie "came out" to her ex-mother-in-law. Ready to break it down? Just keep reading.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Put Me In, Coach"

The doctors of Seattle Grace are competing for more than just surgeries on this week's Grey's Anatomy; Owen is also trying to whip them into shape as a softball team. They're not exactly in prime athletic shape though, and even recruiting a former pro in Henry is no match for the stiff competition coming from Seattle Press.

It's on the lighter side of the spectrum as far as Grey's episodes go: everything works out peachy keen with their patients, and the show is low on drama - aside from Sloane and his new lady friend having a serious effect on Lexie. Let's break it down when you keep reading.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Poker Face"

This week on Grey's Anatomy, the doctors of Seattle Grace explore the delicate balance between keeping things to oneself for others' sake and just telling it like it is. While the fifth-year residents are encouraged to prep for the board exams, Meredith is forced to focus on a new specialty to keep her marriage intact. Callie falls into a new-mom rut, and the newfound friendship between Mark and Arizona isn't helping.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "Loss, Love and Legacy"

Turns out Meredith Grey isn't the only doctor at Seattle Grace with a hotshot doctor for a mom - Jackson's mother Catherine shows up on this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy to stir the pot and make her son cringe with embarrassment. Catherine brings a heavy dose of some much-needed spunk, and her sassy personality makes for one of the best episodes of the season yet.

Catherine manages to get to just about everyone throughout the course of the episode: she banters with Mark, badgers Jackson about Lexie, and even pushes April one step closer to losing her virginity. She may be a meddler, but I loved every minute of it. Ready to break down the highlights? Just

Lexie makes an appearance at the beginning of the episode (yay!) but then she quickly shuttles away to visit her sister for the weekend (boo). Jackson is actually the mastermind behind the trip, and his intentions are thinly veiled: he doesn't want to make Lexie feel the wrath of Catherine. That doesn't prevent Mrs. Dr. Avery from trying to get the dirt though, and she grills everyone from Meredith to Mark for a little bit of info. Though she's taken aback by Mark's glowing recommendation, the real kicker is when Jackson plays coy about whether or not he's in love with Lexie. I felt like it was insinuated that he is in love with her, but I'm not buying it just yet - maybe because we've barely seen them together all season.
It's always fun when Bailey's love life takes center stage, and this week she has to suffer the consequences of last week's male gossip session. Now that Ben knows about Eli, he's got a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Bailey tries to smooth things over, but it appears that she might not be over Ben just yet (or at least she's not over his butt.) I loved the scene where she tries to tell Ben that she didn't dump Eli on his account, because it's so clear that she's lying through her teeth. Better yet, Ben eats it up. Do I feel a reunion coming on?
Meredith and Derek are taking very different approaches to waiting out their Zola situation. Namely, Mere is trying to stay optimistic while Derek can only focus on the negative. Their feelings are put to the test when Karev spills the beans about Zola's seizure, and Derek opens up to Owen about his feelings, saying that he still can't really look at Meredith and that it's all her fault. Ouch. Despite the unhappy circumstances, my heart completely swelled when the forlorn parents sing "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" to Zola over the phone during her hospital visit.
April is super googly eyed over Mrs. Dr. Avery, but all of her sucking up pays off when she gets to participate in the penile transplant. Catherine also can't help but comment on how tense April is, and basically announces that April's virginity is showing. She even goes as far to say that April would be a better surgeon if she just got laid - and then tries to hook her up with a cute guy in a bar. April seems to go along with it, but do you think she'll come back next week as a new woman? I'll be disappointed if she didn't lose it to one of the guys (despite all that's happened, I've always assumed it'd be Karev or Jackson.)

Grey's Anatomy Rundown, "What Is It About Men"

Let's hear it for the boys! The ladies of Seattle Grace are MIA, allowing this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy to focus solely on the menfolk. Each of the male surgeons is dealing with some feelings of anger, whether it be in their career or personal life - but, as the episode tells us, that doesn't mean they want to talk about it. Ultimately, Derek signs up all of his colleagues for his house-building anger management program, and helps the guys hammer out their problems. Literally.

There are bromance troubles brewing with the patients too, as the latest disaster to hit Seattle involves a freak accident at a local comic book convention. You know what that means: zombie nurses, hobbits, and Game of Thrones references abound. It's one of the more comical episodes we've seen in awhile, which is a refreshing change of pace. Let's break it down when you

In the few moments that Meredith appears in this episode, we see that she and Derek are sharing a bed again, but there's still some tension between them. Derek's none-too-pleased about having a new resident on his staff, and it only makes things worse when Karev makes no attempt to hide his apathy toward neuro. Luckily, Derek's found a solution - building his new deck! He heads out there to deal with his frustrations, and over the course of the episode, offers solace to his friends as well.
Owen's trying to settle into his new job as chief of surgery, but it's not exactly a smooth transition. Getting bogged down in paperwork makes him feel helpless, so he tries getting rid of his office to make himself feel more useful. When that doesn't work, Hunt decides to get his hands dirty - by punching out a big guy who's making a ruckus in the ER. His transgression is fun to watch throughout the episode; it's easy to see that he's uncomfortable being the head honcho in the big office, and much prefers to be down in the trenches taking care of business.
Owen's not the only one having trouble adjusting; Webber is in a state of limbo. His fellow surgeons still see him as the chief that's too good to be roughing it with them, while he just wants to be part of the action. He finds his niche in teaching Jackson and Karev to appreciate what they've got. (Speaking of which, how depressing are the scenes where Webber is talking about Adele?) He does eventually get through to the young whippersnappers, and has Karev finding the "joy" in his surgeries again.
Jackson finally finds a solution to his issues with Mark. Derek sees the potential in Jackson and offers him a surgery in neuro, but Jackson sticks to his guns - and sticks it to Mark, using reverse psychology on him to convince Mark that he deserves to lead a surgery a plastics. Unfortunately, when he hints that he might want to work with Derek, Mark lashes out at his friend for stealing Jackson away.
As for Mark, he's on solo baby-sitting duty while Arizona and Callie are away, which of course, is the time that baby Sofia decides to roll over for the first time (is it just me or did she roll right off the couch?). When Sofia seems too content, Mark automatically assumes that something must be wrong with her. As it turns out, he's just being a good dad, and Sofia's fine. That's not enough to calm Mark down, though; he's been quietly holding a grudge about being passed over for Owen's job. Derek's answer to Mark's problems? He needs to get laid.
