Oh, Sad: Girls Just Want to Have Fun Remake in the Works

Man! This one hurts a little. Twentieth Century Fox and Lakeshore Entertainment are planning a remake of the 1985 teen movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun. The film starred little baby-faced Helen Hunt and Sarah Jessica Parker as two teenage friends who love to dance and long to make their way - despite, of course, disapproving parents because parents just don't understand - onto their favorite show: Dance TV.

That part of the news is not too hard to swallow, since everything's being remade these days. '80s remakes, remakes, everywhere. But here's the kicker: according to Variety, "The comedy will be developed as a potential star vehicle for Miley Cyrus."

So, allow me to amend: this one hurts a lot. Miley Cyrus?! Really?

Movies For Those Who Love to Dance (or Just Watch It on TV)

It's just one week since the finale, and I'm already suffering withdrawal from So You Think You Can Dance. My backup dance show, America's Best Dance Crew, is also nearly done. "Girls Just Want to Have Fun": A Tribute

Last week seemed like a particularly rough time for celebrity deaths, and in the shuffle it would be easy to overlook Robert Hazard, who's hardly a household name. But the musician and songwriter, who died last week at age 59, gave Cyndi Lauper one of her biggest hits, and so I wanted to take a minute to pay tribute to the man behind "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."

As the story goes, Hazard wrote the poppy song in a motel bathtub in Delaware in the late '70s. Lauper's version appeared on her debut album, She's So Unusual, in 1983 and quickly climbed the charts, peaking at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 and being named 1994's Video of the Year by MTV. It went on to spawn an '80s movie of the same name and dozens of covers, including one recently by Miley Cyrus.

I can't describe the original version as anything but a joy; it always gives me a little jolt of energy. I also love how much the song changes when put in different hands; some, like singer-songwriters Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, make it melancholy (check out their version), while others manage make it even peppier (the Chipettes on The Chipmunks, for example). Even Weird Al has had his bit of fun with it.

FABTV: Girls Just Want to Have Fun Dance-Off

This is a long FABTV so feel free to fast forward through the movie bits and only watch the radical dance moves. But, if you have not seen Girls Just Want to Have Fun - the ultimate Sarah Jessica Parker flashback - excuse yourself and go rent it stat. As I was saying . . . dance off! At the end of every great dance movie is a great dance scene. SJP and her Joey-Lawrence-look-a-like dance partner/boyfriend seriously cut a rug in matching crop tops and crazy jazz hair. They triumph the rich bitch and her robotic partner with their ultrasynchronized flips and agility. For the ultimate, go to 4:08 and take it in. Oh, and is "Dancing in Heaven" not the best digi dance song?

Movie Night: Sarah Jessica Parker Movies

On the heels of her latest movie news, this week's Movie Night is all about Sarah Jessica Parker. She will forever be associated with Carrie Bradshaw on "Sex and the City," but the truth is, she's played some delightful non-Carrie-like characters in her day.

Banish from your mind Failure to Launch and If Lucy Fell, and check out three of my favorite movies that feature SJP. And instead of photo stills, this week I found short clips from each of these movies. This first one is truly a little bit of '80s bliss.

Girls Just Want to Have Fun
For this movie description - in case you somehow missed the movie back in the mid-1980s - I'm deferring to the Netflix write-up because it's rather hilarious: "Janey (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a shy good girl. Lynne (Helen Hunt) is a cool rock chick. But when the two friends scheme to get Janey on television's biggest after-school dance show, they find themselves on a wild adventure filled with cute boys, hot dancing, prudish nuns, mean rich kids, parents that just don't understand, and girls doing what they know best...just having FUN!"

State and Main
When I need to be cheered up, this David Mamet movie about a doomed movie shoot never fails to do the trick. Sarah Jessica Parker plays a Hollywood starlet who refuses to do a key nude scene (despite the fact that she's well-known for dropping trou in other films) because she wants to restore her saintly image. Besides Mamet's witty dialogue, the best part about this movie is the cast, which also includes Philip Seymour Hoffman as a mopey screenwriter, William H. Macy as a self-important director, and the hilarious Alec Baldwin as ~~himself~~ a drunken, philandering movie star.

L.A. Story
More than just a great SJP movie, this is one of the best Steve Martin movies ever (which makes sense, seeing as Martin wrote the screenplay, basing it on "A Midsummer Night's Dream"). Sarah Jessica Parker plays the young, flighty California girl to Martin's midlife crisis. Victoria Tennant plays the lovely French horn-playing neighbor living next door to Harris (Martin) and who rounds out the little love triangle. The story is funny, whimsical and has that light California feeling with a sprinkling of dour Steve Martinisms.

Hysteria Director Tanya Wexler Talks Vibrators, Faking It, and Duck Sex

Don't be shy . . . It's time to talk sex toys! And Hysteria director Tanya Wexler is writing us a prescription for pleasure. Tanya's film - what she calls "the vibrator movie you can bring your mom to" - is in limited release and stars Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Rupert Everett. When working on a romantic comedy that centers around the invention of the vibrator, you end up with some entertaining and embarrassing situations along the way, and lucky for us, Tanya spilled all the hilariously dirty details. From teaming up with the film's partner Jimmyjane for a drive-by vibrator drop-off to a certain female Oscar-winner to trying unsuccessfully to get ducks to shag on command, Tanya was bursting with great stories from working on this very unconventional film. And while Tanya isn't ashamed to discuss the sexy subject matter of her latest film with us, the mother of four and her partner of 21 years did have a tricky challenge telling her preteen kids what her movie was about. (She eventually gave them the script and let them figure it out themselves!) Check out our interview with the fun-loving director now, and we dare you not to have a girl crush on her by the end!

TrèsSugar: What were some of the challenges to getting a movie made about vibrators?
Tanya Wexler: Getting the script right was tricky because if you just make a movie about the invention of the vibrator, it's actually a really short movie: you go "bzz" and it's done. And we had a kind of light romantic comedy. I say I made the vibrator movie you can bring your mom to. But some people wanted it to be raunchy or some people wanted it to be more serious and about feminism. People project a lot onto this movie of what they want, because there isn't a lot out there about vibrators and women's pleasure, and we still don't really deal with that topic very well, or we're overly antsy around it. And as a result, people have a lot of ideas of what the movie could and should be, and you can't please everyone. [laughs]

TS: Ha, good one.
TW: It's nonstop!

TS: Do you find sex toys inherently funny or something to be seriously celebrated?
TW: Yes!

TS: Both?
TW: Yes! Yes. I think they make me laugh, and I think that the inner kind of Beavis and Butt-head in all of us goes "[laugh]." You know, that inner 13-year-old, like, "Hahaha vibrator . . . " and yet they're awesome and fun.

TS: What shocked you the most when researching the movie?
TW: That ducks are the rapists of the bird world, and you'll see when you see the movie, because there's a little bit of questionable duck behavior - or awesome duck behavior - in the movie. It's totally a sidebar, but you cannot make ducks shag on command. I'm just saying.

TS: What about the whole history of hysteria being a medical condition?
TW: When I first heard the idea, I was like, "What do you mean it was invented in Victorian times?" I knew about hysteria, but the idea that the treatment was manual [British accent] massage deparaxism - which is what they called it - and, of course, the denial. The most shocking thing is the denial, that they didn't think it was sexual.

TS: Do you think they were really in denial?
TW: No, I don't think that some people were. My college roommate was with her high school boyfriend for two years and she had never had an orgasm. I think there's all kinds of denial, especially with women's sexuality. So the fact that there are young women today who haven't had an orgasm, whether self-induced - which is insane - or with a partner, then why wouldn't we think back then that women wouldn't know what orgasms were?

They would get a massage, and the doctor's saying, "Without a penis, this isn't sex, because sex is about procreation," so what is this? The best physical therapy you've ever had. So once you don't think of it as something other than what the doctor's supposed to do to cure your uncontrollable crying or uncontrollable laughter or whatever, then it's just an awesome muscle spasm. If you don't think women have their own inherent sexuality, then you're not thinking about it like that.

If something feels off at the office, you may want to brace yourself for the worst. Wise Bread shares signs to look for when a pink slip is coming.

There are two types of employees. One has a good idea of what they do, who they are, and what position they play in the company. They are savvy. They know the score. They are under no delusions, and will no doubt leave for another job long before they are ever considered as cannon-fodder.

And then there's the other kind. The guy who could get Gandhi to hate him. The woman who spends most of her day chatting on the phone to friends or doing online shopping. Or the nice chap in sales who is completely oblivious that the recent merger means his job is now obsolete. They all have Ostrich Syndrome. They couldn't see a pink slip coming if it was 8ft tall and glowing in the dark, screaming "you're fired!"

You want to avoid being in that second category at all costs. So I've compiled a handy list. If you can answer yes to THREE or more of these questions, you may want to think about sprucing up your résumé and dry-cleaning your best interview attire.

1. Are you no longer in the loop about, well, anything?

This is a huge telltale sign. Suddenly you're finding out about company news from the cleaning lady or the new girl in accounting. If you were formally in the know about all things business related, but now suffer from "the company's doing what??!" disease, the writing is probably on the wall.

2. Did you recently screw up big-time?

We're not talking a minor faux pas here. Did you lose money on an account that was previously bulletproof? Oh dear. Were you caught having sex on the boss's desk with the boss's spouse? That's probably not a career-enhancing move. Unless you're a real dope, you know if you have screwed up. And if you know, HR knows. It may not be the final nail in your coffin, but it's a nail in the coffin nonetheless.

3. Are people avoiding you at all costs?

Eye contact is difficult to make with someone if you know his or her head's on the chopping block. Small talk is just as tough. It's best just to avoid that person altogether. So if people are no longer doing that fun "stop 'n' chat" in the hall, or the coffee room empties when you arrive, then guess what . . . you may be a marked man or woman.

American Idol: Who Deserves to Get Cut This Week?

It's top six week on American Idol and with the promise of final five-status looming, things are getting serious - but you wouldn't know that by all the fun the contestants seemed to be having belting out awesome Queen classics! For real, everyone was on top of their game. At this point in the season, everyone has had enough stage time to get comfortable and they've all developed and defined their styles, which means it's going to be even more tragic to see another hopeful let go. But before we get to that, let's go over the performances.

The finalists opened the show with "We Are The Champions," and while it may be true, I can't help but feel like it must have rubbed salt in the wounds of the most recent cast-offs. Jessica Sanchez followed up with "Bohemian Rhapsody," Skylar Laine continued to impress with "The Show Must Go On," and Joshua Ledet was better than ever on "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." Elise was great at "I Want It All," but I felt like so many weeks in the bottom has knocked the sparkle out of her eyes. Phillip Phillips loves his "Fat Bottomed Girls" and Hollie Cavanagh took on "Save Me." And that was just the first half of the show. What did you think of all their performances, and more importantly, who do you think is headed home?
