Movie Preview: Colin Firth in A Single Man

When was the last time you were transfixed by a preview completely without dialogue? The trailer for the 1960s-set A Single Man instead relies on its visual strength, which it has in spades - not a complete surprise considering this is designer Tom Ford's directorial debut (and word is they have Mad Men's production design group).

Based on the Christopher Isherwood novel of the same name, A Single Man focuses on the unraveling of a man (Firth) after his partner dies. The trailer is filled with beauty and beauties in pain - watch for Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Ginnifer Goodwin and Lee Pace in the moody clip. I'm very curious about this movie, if only to see how fashion force Ford handles himself in this entirely different medium. His aesthetic is very sensual, which I hope translates to the screen. And I'd see nearly anything Coiln Firth is in.

HBO Renews Its Vows With Big Love

Big news for Big Love: The polygamy drama will be back next year for a fourth season! HBO announced the renewal with a statement saying, "The series keeps getting better and better."

One thing that wasn't getting better, at least earlier this season, was the ratings - the show's season three premiere (which came after a long break caused in large part by the writers' strike) drew just 1.2 million viewers. But The Hollywood Reporter notes that the show's grown in the ratings each week since then, and the show's currently averaging about 5 million viewers a week once all the repeat airings are taken into account.

The show's excited co-creators gave E! a statement celebrating the good news, making the following promise to fans:

As season three continues they'll forget about the time they waited and get caught up in our best season ever. And we also swear we won't make them wait as long next year.

Well, that sounds promising. Tell me: Are you excited that there's more Big Love on the way in 2010?

Drew and Ginnifer Talk Relationship Advice and Movies

As the movie based on the relationship advice book He's Just Not That Into You opens this Friday, Drew Barrymore and Ginnifer Goodwin are opening up about their thoughts on the whole thing. Ginnifer gushes about her costars while Drew says she admires the "sage wisdom" of the movie. Plus, she gives a bit of info on her directorial debut, Whip It! starring Ellen Page. Check it out:

Drew, what do you think is the best piece of advice in the movie?

Drew: There are two things. One, a lot of the stuff that Justin Long says about the rules, like don't buy into this behavior. His sage wisdom, I love. We all need a friend like that. And I love Jennifer Aniston and Ben Affleck’s character which is that sometimes society forces you into thinking that love is supposed to be this certain mold or it’s supposed to look a certain way, it's supposed to entail certain things, and really it’s about the person and the partnership. I love that.

Do you think every woman has a He’s Just Not That Into You moment in her dating life?

Drew: If you're human, yes.

Can you tell me a little bit about Whip It!? We’re very excited about that.

Drew: I'm really excited about it. . . It’s very personal for me, it's about finding a tribe in this world and it's a love story between the mother and the daughter. If you feel different and you’re trying to get your family to accept you, finding, like I said, your tribe in this world is crucial and just coming into yourself and feeling comfortable with that. Ellen Page is incredible and people really root for her in the movie and in life and I’m so lucky that she’s the person I got to do this with. I'm honored.

Ginnifer, did you read the book before taking the part, filming the movie?

Ginnifer: I did not. I purchased the book when I got the role. I take a very academic approach to my crafting of characters. I think I read the intro and I realized that I was going to be affected by this book, that I was going to grow somehow. I believe strongly that what an actor thinks or feels is expressed through the eyes when we’re talking about a screen the size of a school bus. It was important to me that I not have this information before the end of the movie.

Do you feel like your character Gigi is the most relatable character in the movie?

Ginnifer: I hope so because I found her the most relatable. To me she was the audience. She's every woman. She's fiercely intelligent and it’s not that there are foibles out of naïveté or ignorance or air-headedness. It’s that she’s been given the same skewed dating compass, the same bad fabricated, misleading man manual that we’ve all been given. It’s because of this that she walks boldly in the wrong direction. I found her so relatable. I didn’t want the audience to be able to excuse her actions because she was an idiot. I wanted them to say "I am brilliant. I am beautiful and I have this mistake, but it's only because I've been misled. I've been given the wrong guidance."

What was it like working with so many seasoned actors? Did you learn anything from them? Was it exciting to work with them?

Ginnifer: Oh my gosh, every last one! When I signed on to this project I was completely unaware of the casting. I read it a long while back and was obsessed with it because the writing was so brilliant. I actually cried with happiness when I was sent the list of the people who were interested and the people with whom they were talking because I admire them all so much. Their caliber is unparalleled, their talent untouchable. Their choices are always brilliant and the movie can only be made better surrounded by such people.

First Look: Big Love Season Three

It's been such a long wait for the third season of Big Love. Thanks to the writers' strike, the HBO drama won't return till January - almost 18 months after it was last on TV.

But there are finally some real signs that we're getting close to the premiere, including the first couple of promos that HBO's rolled out over the past week or so. The first is creepy and moody; there's no dialogue, just the haunting sounds of the Black Keys song "Lies" while some seriously dark things take place in the brief video clips. The second includes interviews with several cast members talking about how the show has been "amped up" for the third season. Here's hoping that whatever we see in January makes this long wait worthwhile. TV Tonight: Big Love, From the Beginning

HBO was kind enough to fill the Big Love-sized hole in my heart with a recap video a few weeks back. But if you'd rather catch up on the show's first two seasons the old-fashioned way, it will be possible starting tonight.

HBO2 will air one episode from the series in order for the next 24 Saturdays, starting at 8 p.m. EDT/PDT tonight. It's the first time I can remember that HBO has shown the series in its entirety, and it's a great opportunity to meet the Henricksons if you've yet to make their acquaintance.

Ginnifer Goodwin Is the "Face of the Future": Do You Agree?

On Tuesday night, the Women In Film Crystal + Lucy Awards took place in Beverly Hills, with kudos going out to a handful of strong, interesting ladies in Hollywood. Salma Hayek received an award, as did director Diane English and the cast of her upcoming remake of The Women. In addition, Ginnifer Goodwin received the Face of the Future Award, which was handed to Emily Blunt at last year's ceremony.

I personally wouldn't argue with this at all. I think Goodwin is wonderful on Big Love, and she appears to steal the show in the trailer for He's Just Not That Into You. She's got an energy and magnetism onscreen that I find appealing, and I'm curious to see her do more varied projects.

What other young actresses would you give this award to? I'm slightly surprised it wasn't handed to Ellen Page, simply because she seems to have been the favored female rising star of the year. I might have honored America Ferrera if it were up to me, or Zooey Deschanel. I also think Brittany Snow and Blake Lively are young ladies we'll want to keep our eyes on. What do you think? Is Ginnifer the best lady for this award?

Catch Up on Big Love in Four Minutes

This "Big Love in Four Minutes" video HBO just put together makes me a little sad, because it's still going to be a long, long wait to see the show's third season. Thanks to the writers' strike, the series - which should have been on right now - won't be seen again till January 2009.

The good news is, that should give anyone who hasn't seen the first two seasons of the drama plenty of time to get caught up the old-fashioned way, by renting DVDs or checking out episodes On Demand. But if you're just not sure you want to commit, this four-minute summary is a pretty good one, with all the typical dry humor these ". . . in x minutes" videos tend to have. (I especially like the little "bleeeep" noise that keeps recurring when they talk about video poker.)

At least I'll be able to get a fix of some of the actors in other roles before January - Amanda Seyfried in Mamma Mia and Ginnifer Goodwin in He's Just Not That Into You. For now, though, it's just good to see Bill and his wives together, however briefly. To check out the video, just read more.

Movie Preview: He's Just Not That Into You

So far, the pros for this movie include all the members of a stellar and adorable cast which, as I've reported before, includes just about everyone. Seriously. Based on the preview alone, though, Ginnifer Goodwin looks like she might steal a lot of scenes from the bigger named stars.

The movie is based on the bestselling book that was based on a Sex and the City episode about women overanalyzing men too much when things are sometimes as simple as, "He's just not into you." It's supposed to be liberating. . . or something. I guess the con for me is that I'm not quite clear on how this constitutes a cohesive plot and the trailer is no help with that. At first I thought it was a movie about how men play games and sidestep issues, but then Scarlett Johansson's character plays games, too, so. . . maybe it's just about game-playing.

Anyway, just seeing these familiar faces with The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love," blasting in the background is pretty fun. The movie was originally supposed to come out this summer but has now been pushed back to October 24. I like a good romcom in the fall, so I'm not complaining. A Whole Bunch of Stars are Just Not That Into You

Five more actors are joining the cast of He's Just Not That Into You.
Specifically, Jennifer Connelly, Kevin Connolly, Ginnifer Goodwin, Bradley Cooper, and Justin "I'm a Mac" Long are signing up for the film, which is based on the guide to dating by "Sex and the City" staffers Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. Barrymore's Flower Films is producing, and Ken Kwapis of "The Office" and License to Wed is directing.

According to the Hollywood Reporter:

Jennifer Connelly plays a woman stuck in a tired marriage with Cooper's character. Kevin Connolly, meanwhile, is a man pining after a woman, still not cast, who is having an affair with Cooper. Goodwin is a young woman obsessed with Kevin Connolly's character who tries to set up accidental meetings with him only to run across his friend, played by Long, who takes her on as a "My Fair Lady" experiment.

And Drew?
She "plays a woman perpetually confused by dating" - as I would be, too, if I were friends with that mess of people.

"Big Love" Gets a Third Season of Love from HBO

Hooray for "Big Love"! HBO's polygamy drama will return for a third season - as many installments as Bill Henrickson has wives.

The show hasn't exactly had an easy year this year, holding down the fort for HBO alone on Monday nights. According to Variety, the show is averaging about 2 million viewers per episode - half what it got following "The Sopranos" in its first season. But HBO believes that over the course of a week of repeats, DVR playbacks and On Demand airings, the show rounds up as many as 6 million viewers. The new season order is for 12 episodes, same as the first and second seasons.

"Big Love" will get another shot on Sundays soon: HBO also announced that the final two episodes will air first on Sundays at 9 p.m., the slot currently occupied by "John from Cincinnati." "John" will vacate the slot as of Aug. 12, when its first season wraps up; "Big Love" then will take it over for episodes airing Aug. 19 and Aug. 26. Those episodes will air on Mondays as well.
