In Treatment Season Two: Meet the New Patients

I'm still catching up on the first season of In Treatment on DVD, but that doesn't make me any less excited for this first glimpse of season two, which will start April 5 on HBO.

This season's schedule for the show, which stars Gabriel Byrne as a therapist, is a little more forgiving. Instead of airing five nights a week, two of the half-hour episodes will play on Sundays with three more - including Paul's session with his own therapist, Gina (Dianne Wiest) - on Mondays. It's also only seven weeks instead of nine. HBO says people tended to watch the show in chunks anyway, so hopefully this will make it all easier to digest.

As for the stories this season, Paul will still be dealing with some of the fallout from season one plus taking on a new roster of patients, played by Hope Davis (a single attorney), John Mahoney (a CEO), Allison Pill (an architecture student), and Aaron Shaw (an 11-year-old, whose parents will also appear). 2009 Sundance Spotlight: Adam, Humpday, I Love You Phillip Morris

While I won't be heading to the 2009 Sundance Film Festival this year, I will be sorting through the humongous pile of festival entries to share with you some of the films I think look most promising. From quirky documentaries (like Chris Rock's) to talented young filmmaker debuts to a potential runaway hit, Sundance is filled with entertainment possibilities. Here are today's selections:

Adam
Boy, do I love me some Hugh Dancy and I've been waiting for this actor to land a juicy, leading role. Well, my prayers have been answered with Adam, in which he stars as a fellow who's a little bit different. The movie explores the idea that "truly reaching another person means bravely stretching into discomfiting territory - and the shake-up can be liberating." Dancy's co-stars include Damages's Rose Byrne, as well as Frankie Faison, Peter Gallagher, Amy Irving, and Mark Linn-Baker. I can't wait to see this one!

Humpday
The director of this movie, Lynn Shelton, describes her feature-length film premiering at Sundance this year as "two dudes attempting to out-dude each other by attempting to do each other." This movie, which aims to "unearth the biggest ironies in the male ego," is rather timely as Brody Jenner and his crew currently show up once a week to unwittingly demonstrate those ironies in Bromance. Anyway. At its essence, this is the kind of project that independent film festivals are made for: It doesn't star anyone you've heard of and the director is someone who's dabbled in film and art for a while. It looks really quirky and funny - click here to check out a clip.

I Love You Phillip Morris
This movie stars Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor as lovers and comes from two directors: Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. It's a "tale of a spectacularly charismatic and resourceful con-man's journey from small-town cop to flamboyant white-collar criminal." I have high hopes for this offbeat flick from the same minds behind Bad Santa, and I think it's cool that Jim Carrey is stretching a bit as an actor. The movie's not in competition but will premiere at Sundance this year. Here's a clip:

HBO Stays In Treatment

Nine weeks of therapy wasn't enough for HBO. The network has decided to renew In Treatment for a second season.

The show, which stars Gabriel Byrne as a therapist, is one of the more unusual programs to appear on HBO in recent years. The half-hour show aired five days a week, Monday through Friday, with each day focusing on a session with a different patient. For the first four days of the week, Byrne's character led the sessions; on Friday, it was his turn on the couch with his own therapist (Dianne Wiest).

The show wasn't highly rated, but HBO has already made a couple of changes for this second season, including bringing in famed playwright and producer Warren Leight to run things and moving the show's production to New York (though the actual therapy practice will keep its setting near Washington, DC). So far, only Byrne and Wiest are on board for the second season, and it's unclear whether any of the patients from the first season will continue on or if it will be a whole new cast.

I thought In Treatment was a great concept, even if I couldn't always keep up with it, and I'll be checking out the season one DVD this Fall to catch up on the things I missed. Season two is scheduled to start production in a few months and make its debut in early 2009. Will you be watching? Or is In Treatment just too big of a commitment?

No HBO? You Can Still Watch In Treatment - For Free

HBO's intriguing - but not for the commitment-phobic - nightly series, In Treatment, isn't exactly an overnight sensation. The show's premiere last week got the lowest numbers for an HBO series premiere ever. But maybe it's not quite time to panic yet, considering all the other ways HBO is making In Treatment available to HBO subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

Personally, I've been TiVoing all the episodes and hoping to settle in for a long marathon sometime down the line. But I don't have to do that, at least for the first three weeks: HBO has made the first 15 episodes available as a podcast from the iTunes store. Those same 15 episodes are also streaming online for free. In both of those cases, the full week's worth of episodes becomes available every Monday, so you don't even have to check back several times to get them all.

There are also two-minute recaps of each episode available on the show's main site, and if you have HBO but don't want to tune in each night, they're all also up through HBO On Demand.

TV Tonight: In Treatment

If the writers' strike has left a void where your TiVo queue used to be, In Treatment is coming along to fill it up. Starting tonight, the HBO series kicks off its rather intense schedule, airing for a half-hour a night, five nights a week.

Gabriel Byrne stars as psychotherapist Paul Weston, and each half-hour installment focuses on a session with a different patient. On Tuesdays, there's Alex (Blair Underwood), a pilot struggling to come to terms with something that happened in Iraq; on Wednesdays, it's Sophie (Mia Wasikowska), a teenage gymnast with possible self-destructive tendencies. On Fridays, Paul takes his turn on the couch for a session with his therapist (Dianne Wiest).

I'm intrigued by the concept, and as a fan of HBO's other therapy-based series (Tell Me You Love Me), I could see myself getting hooked. On the other hand, five episodes a week for nine weeks is a lot to follow, even with so little else on television. Think you can handle this Treatment? First Look: In Treatment

When I first heard about HBO's In Treatment, which premieres later this month, I thought it sounded like it could be a little too intense. The show will air one half-hour episode each weekday for nine weeks - a total of 45 episodes. But now with the writers' strike in full effect, I'm actually excited about so much Treatment; after all, what else am I going to be watching?

The show follows a therapist named Paul, played by Gabriel Byrne, through a week of clients - one on Mondays, one on Tuesdays, and so on. Paul's own therapy session airs on Fridays. It's such an inventive and unusual concept, and yet, I'm still afraid it's too much for anyone to handle. But after watching HBO's brief preview, I'm already curious to see more from each of Paul's clients, and I like the choice to put Paul's own sessions in the mix. Plus, Gabriel Byrne is the rare actor I could actually watch for 20-plus hours, and that's one of the big keys to making the show work.

HBO Schedules Some Intense Treatment

I'm excited about In Treatment, the forthcoming HBO show starring Gabriel Byrne as a psychotherapist who is in therapy himself - but it's going to take over my life. See, HBO recently released its schedule for the show, and it's ... intense.

The show will air half-hour episodes five times a week for nine weeks. That's a total of 45 episodes - double the number a regular series airs in nine months.

Each night of the week will focus on a different patient for the duration of the series. One patient's story will always air on Mondays, another on Tuesdays, and so on; on Fridays, Byrne's character takes the couch with his own therapist (Dianne Wiest). The other stars, by the way, include Melissa George, Blair Underwood, Mia Wasikowska, Josh Charles, and Embeth Davidtz. Since that adds up to six patients total, I assume one of them is a couples session. (In a pretty cool twist, HBO Select will be airing the sessions at their "actual" times - so if a patient's session is always Mondays at 9 a.m., that's when you'll see the episode.)

This series could be awesome - it has a cool concept, and it's written by a Big Love and Six Feet Under writer and produced by Mark Wahlberg. I really want to like it. But 45 episodes over nine weeks? That's more intense than a college course! What do you think? What Do You Think About the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series?

Bryan Cranston is taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Breaking Bad for the second consecutive year. He beat out Simon Baker, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Gabriel Byrne, and Jon Hamm.

As much as I wanted to see Jon Hamm grace the podium, Cranston is definitely deserving of the statue. What do you think of this win? Vote on all my Emmy Awards polls here!
