G.I. Joe: A Real American (Box Office) Hero

Did you know that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra posted the highest opening for an August non-sequel on Friday? Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Over the weekend, the movie grossed an estimated $56.2 million domestically, and, combined with overseas numbers, took in an estimated $100.3 million worldwide. As Variety points out, Paramount is having a stellar Summer this year: "Not only has the studio launched another franchise in G.I. Joe, it has reenergized the Star Trek franchise and continued successfully mining the Transformers property."

Julie and Julia also opened over the weekend and grossed just over $20 million, coming in second place. The animated guinea pigs in G-Force pulled in about half that but still came in at No. 3 at the box office. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince followed closely behind at No. 4 while Judd Apatow's Funny People "fell a steep 65 percent" in its second week, rounding out the top five with an estimated $7.9 million.

G.I. Joe Opens This Weekend: Are You Excited For It?

I'll admit it: I forgot about this G.I. Joe movie. I didn't realize until today that it's coming out this Friday, Aug. 7. This doesn't necessarily bode well for the action film, but then again, it does have a strong fan base already and is garnering some positive reviews.

Here's a synopsis: "An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer."

Are you excited to see this popcorn flick? Or, do you just not care?

Are You Interested in the G.I. Joe Movie?

I asked a guy friend of mine who admits he's a "total fanboy" what he thought of this new trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. His reaction? Between his childhood love of G.I. Joe and Sienna Miller as The Baroness, "It's like the fulfillment of too many adolescent dreams, all in one."

Ha! I want adolescent dreams fulfilled, please. In the form of a Jem movie. But anyway.

The first real trailer for this action flick gives us a glimpse of yet another childhood toy turned Summer blockbuster heading to theaters soon. From what I can tell, there are some bad guys who want to explode stuff (starting with the Eiffel Tower) and some good guys with amazing gadgets. British actress Gemma Arterton has been chosen as a Bond girl for Bond 22, Reuters reports.
According to Variety, Marlon Wayans has signed on for the live-action G.I. Joe film.
A large collection of music from the 1970s - including music by Bob Marley and Peter Tosh - has disappeared from the archives of the former Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, writes Billboard.
Tabatha Coffey, one of the most awesome characters from Shear Genius, is getting her own Bravo reality show, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Bruce Willis Has More Than Meets the Eye in the G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation Trailer

I hope you weren't expecting to see too much of Channing Tatum in G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation, because his character Duke only makes the briefest of appearances despite his starring role in the original. After his character is apparently disposed of, we meet the new folks tasked with carrying the action film in his place: Dwayne Johnson as Roadblock, Adrianne Palicki as Lady Jaye, and (drumroll, please) Bruce Willis as G.I. Joe himself.

The new squad of Joes has to defeat Zartan to save the world (as elite soldier squads are often called on to do), so the preview offers us lots of footage of them training in various ways, as well as many shots of Palicki's assets, of course. Willis doesn't pop up until the end or so, but he's making the most of it, firing off a very large gun and spouting a quip. I enjoy seeing him in action star mode, but aside from that and a new rendition of The White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army," this trailer isn't pumping me up that much. Watch and see what you think after the jump.

Kate Mara and Max Minghella Join Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum For a Ten Year Reunion

The cast of Ten Year was in a celebratory mood last night as they prepartied and debuted their movie at the Toronto Film Festival. The stars, including couples Kate Mara and Max Minghella as well as Jenna Dewan and Channing Tatum, kicked off their evening with a private reception hosted by Grey Goose at the Toronto Soho House. Their movie, which is about a high-school class coming together a decade after graduation, also stars actors like Chris Pratt and Lynn Collins. At the premiere's preparty, we spotted Justin Long chatting up Scott Speedman while Jenna Dewan, in a sexy hot-pink dress, and Channing Tatum made the rounds among the agents, producers, and fellow actors in attendance. Channing and Jenna made the trek to Canada to support the project in between their hectic shooting schedules. She's currently busy working on her soon-to-debut TV show, The Playboy Club, while he's been filming G.I. Joe: Retaliation in Louisiana.
