G.I. Joe: A Real American (Box Office) Hero

Did you know that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra posted the highest opening for an August non-sequel on Friday? Well, now you know, and knowing is half the battle. Over the weekend, the movie grossed an estimated $56.2 million domestically, and, combined with overseas numbers, took in an estimated $100.3 million worldwide. As Variety points out, Paramount is having a stellar Summer this year: "Not only has the studio launched another franchise in G.I. Joe, it has reenergized the Star Trek franchise and continued successfully mining the Transformers property."

Julie and Julia also opened over the weekend and grossed just over $20 million, coming in second place. The animated guinea pigs in G-Force pulled in about half that but still came in at No. 3 at the box office. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince followed closely behind at No. 4 while Judd Apatow's Funny People "fell a steep 65 percent" in its second week, rounding out the top five with an estimated $7.9 million.

G.I. Joe Opens This Weekend: Are You Excited For It?

I'll admit it: I forgot about this G.I. Joe movie. I didn't realize until today that it's coming out this Friday, Aug. 7. This doesn't necessarily bode well for the action film, but then again, it does have a strong fan base already and is garnering some positive reviews.

Here's a synopsis: "An elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe, operating out of The Pit, takes on an evil organization led by a notorious arms dealer."

Are you excited to see this popcorn flick? Or, do you just not care?

Are You Interested in the G.I. Joe Movie?

I asked a guy friend of mine who admits he's a "total fanboy" what he thought of this new trailer for G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. His reaction? Between his childhood love of G.I. Joe and Sienna Miller as The Baroness, "It's like the fulfillment of too many adolescent dreams, all in one."

Ha! I want adolescent dreams fulfilled, please. In the form of a Jem movie. But anyway.

The first real trailer for this action flick gives us a glimpse of yet another childhood toy turned Summer blockbuster heading to theaters soon. From what I can tell, there are some bad guys who want to explode stuff (starting with the Eiffel Tower) and some good guys with amazing gadgets. Check it out and tell me: Are you interested in watching this?

British actress Gemma Arterton has been chosen as a Bond girl for Bond 22, Reuters reports.
According to Variety, Marlon Wayans has signed on for the live-action G.I. Joe film.

Joe has that loud, flashy, blockbuster appeal which can make for a perfect weekend rental - even if it's pretty much mindless entertainment. (Plus, I know how much you love Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum!) Bonus: If you're a CGI geek, the special two-disc version includes a behind-the-scenes look at the special effects.

I Love You Beth Cooper
Hayden Panettiere stars as the title character - the hottest girl in school and long-time crush of the film's nerdy hero, Denis. When Denis wins class valedictorian, he uses his graduation speech to profess his love to Beth. Lucky for him, the act of courage works in his favor, and Beth shows up at his house. You can pretty much guess what happens from there - her boyfriend is not pleased, threatens to beat Denis up, etc. - but the DVD features an alternate ending to spice things up. Critics panned its release, but if you're a devotee of the teen sex comedy genre, then this is one to put on your viewing checklist.
