Movie Night: Celebrating Mexico

As Cinco de Mayo approaches, I figured now would be a good opportunity to plan a movie night with some of my favorite movies having to do with Mexico. I left off Quinceanera because I've already recommended it, but that is one of my favorite films in this genre. Rent it!

Frida
Salma Hayek's performance as Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is astounding. The film follows Kahlo's very turbulent life: from a debilitating accident, to her troubled relationship with Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), to her reputation as a communist and lesbian, to her untimely death. The film beautifully captures the great passions and terrible pains that influenced Kahlo's artwork.

read more My Family Admittedly I didn't take into account Jennifer Lopez's performance in My Family when I recently questioned her acting talent. The film is a heartwarming portrayal of Jose and Maria (Lopez plays a young Maria), first-generation Mexican-Americans who build a life together in California in the 1930s. As time moves steadily onward, they face discrimination, police corruption and deportation, yet they also watch as their family expands and they raise six children. The focus shifts to their son Jimmy (Jimmy Smits) who marries a Salvadoran woman to help her stay in the country. By the 1980s, the third generation in the family is struggling to assimilate to modern American youth culture. There is rarely a dull or empty moment in this film about a family's unconditional love for one another. Y Tu Mama Tambien This film is in Spanish with English subtitles, and it is well worth the "read." Children of Men director Alfonso Cuaron wrote and directed the riveting, sensual tale about what happens when you take two strapping young men and an older woman on a road trip near Mexico City. Let me give you a hint at the answer: some sex, jealousy, fighting - all the good stuff. Gael Garcia Bernal plays one of the young men and he is unbelievably good-looking. The film provides an excellent - if often difficult - look at Mexico in all its beauty and heartache. Source and source

While many women dash to electrolysis or maintain a standing appointment with a waxer, Frida Kahlo proudly- and beautifully, we might add - skipped out on hair removal treatments. In fact, when she was photographed for the cover of French Vogue in the late 1930s, she wore her signature braided hairstyle, red lips, and a unibrow. This unconventional beauty was famed for her artistic talents, and her legacy is stronger than ever.

Frida Gustavsson Goes Mod For H&M's Winter Campaign

The new ad, featuring Frida Gustavsson in a slicked back high ponytail, shows simple structured silhouettes in the way of sheath dresses, knits, tops, and trousers dipped in purple, blue, and dark citron hues. Here are the top three cold weather dressing tips we've gleaned from the ad:

Invest in colored tights to pair with streamlined dresses and skirts.

Colorblocking is here to stay; try pairing a boxy top with vibrant trousers for a chic, work-appropriate ensemble.

Shift dresses and A-line silhouettes are a simple way to inject instant '60s appeal - and don't forget the loafers.

I've been obsessed with Seattle artist Frida Clements's work for some time now. Her style, which encompasses art nouveau-inspired as well as nature-based imagery, looks gorgeous when it's illustrating gig posters for some of my favorite bands, including Bon Iver, Joanna Newsom, Rufus Wainwright, and Spoon, among many others.

When I visited Seattle recently, I asked Frida if I could pop in to take some photos of her home and home studio. She graciously agreed, and when I arrived, I was treated to a warm, cozy, and lovely home dotted with art and nostalgic remembrances. Gucci Spring 2012

Glamour, Milanese style: Gucci kicked off Milan Fashion Week with a show that was heavy on metallics and fringe. The 20s theme we saw in New York - literal Gatsby references at Ralph Lauren, theatrical and abstract at Marc Jacobs - got its sleekest turn yet with Frida Giannini's take on the Art Deco architecture, shown via boxy, tailored jackets, drop-waist dresses decorated with red-carpet ready fringe, and colorblocked prints. It happens to be the luxury house's 90th birthday this year; it was started in the 1920s, coincidentally, so this collection pays homage to the period in a very modern way.

Trends: 20s, drop-waist dresses, fringe, colorblocking, split-bottom pants.
Colors: gold, ivory, black, emerald, camel.
Key Piece: the sequin colorblocked drop-waist dresses with fringe will rock on the red carpet.
Accessories: peep-toe ankle strap stilettos, python bags, one in an emerald green.
Who Would Wear It: we'll see the dresses on retro-glam girls like Kirsten Dunst and Nicole Richie; the more tailored pieces would be great on fashion-forward sophisticates like Julia Restoin-Roitfeld or even her mom, Carine.

The idea, shot by Steven Meisel, was meant to, "exemplify an anything goes attitude to fashion maximalism," as portrayed by the harlequin flooring and fancy velvet sofas, juxtaposed with a casual attitude.
