Clive Owen Channeling Philip Marlowe

Apparently, BuzzSugar readers love Clive Owen. He's neck and neck with Leonardo DiCaprio for the Hottest Actor Oscar, and he filled the Humphrey Bogart role in our Casablanca recast.

Apparently, we're not the only ones to draw a comparison between Bogie and the British hottie. Zap2It is reporting that Owen has been tapped by Universal to star in a new film franchise as Philip Marlowe, the detective in Raymond Chandler's novels. According to the article:

Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment have acquired rights to Chandler's novels, including "The Big Sleep" and "Farewell My Lovely." Nobody has yet decided which book they want to adapt, much less who will be doing the adaptation, but Owen is attached as both star and executive producer.

I've always wondered why Owen hasn't become a much bigger star, so perhaps this franchise could be his ticket to blockbuster status. What do you guys think about the idea of Detective Clive?

It's Aliiiiive! Frankenstein Resurrects on the Big Screen

Get ready for another monster-sized franchise: writer Dean Koontz's Frankenstein series has been selected for the movie treatment. But don't expect to see townspeople carrying torches to drive the creature out of the village; this modern spin on Mary Shelley's classic is set in current-day New Orleans.

The film version will most likely jump off from Koontz's first book Prodigal Son, which follows two detectives who meet the doc and his intelligent bio-engineered invention (named Deucalion) during the middle of a murder case. Deucalion is two centuries old with tattoos all over his face, and a bit of a crime fighter as he helps the investigators. If the story takes off, expect to see countless sequels - Koontz already has three follow-ups to Son and two more in the works.

Intelligent with tattoos? Deucalion sounds strikingly different from the hulking, green-faced monster with bolts that we're familiar with. Now, the only question is, who should play him? The actor should probably be big and muscle-bound, but with an action star quality. Channing Tatum, anyone?

Chris Weitz Wishes He Could Cut the Frolicking Vampire Scene From New Moon

Twilight fans still have a few months to go before Eclipse hits theaters this Summer, but they'll flock to the stores in a few weeks to pick up copies of New Moon on DVD on March 21. There are a few editions featuring all kinds of bonus features, and I was lucky enough to chat with director Chris Weitz on everything from his favorite scene, to Rob and Kristen's relationship, to what he wishes had ended up on the cutting room floor.

There are lots of different editions of the New Moon DVD. Which bonus features are you particularly excited about? I'm excited that my voice will finally be heard! For me, the fun thing was doing the commentary with Peter Lambert, my editor, because it kind of re-created the atmosphere in the cutting room. Peter's a really funny guy, and we were able to delve into not only the behind-the-scenes moments, but to explain why certain things were shot or cut together in certain ways. So that, for me, was the most fun.
When you go back and watch it again, are there things you'd like to change if you could? I would like to never have shot Rob and Kristen running through the forest and Kristen's just turned into a vampire. Because everybody always laughs and it makes me feel terrible. [Laughs] I would have shot it a different way so it wouldn't get that response. But otherwise, I'm very happy with things.
You must get lots of questions abut Rob and Kristen. Do you laugh it off or are you totally sick of hearing about it? I'm somewhat clueless - when you're the director, you're kind of like the school principal. Nobody really tells you anything. You really have no idea what's going on. I'm the last person who would know about this kinda stuff. I'm sure you could get more from reading the paper.

What was your favorite scene to shoot in New Moon? I'm very fond of the memories that a lot of the scenes invoke in me. My favorite scene is probably somewhere between the very last scene, and the cliffhanger that it's left on, and the scenes in Italy. Just the experience shooting those scenes was so magnificent. We were in this beautiful hillside town in Tuscany, and going home to fresh-made pasta every night, and surrounded by thousands of fans of the series while we were shooting it. I know I'll never experience anything like that ever again.
We still don't know who will be directing Breaking Dawn, but what's your take on the rumors that it will likely be two movies, possibly in 3D? 3D seems to be the new thing that everything has to be. I think the good thing about 3D is that it can lend tremendous depth to a picture, and really make it extraordinarily lush, visually. And also that it gets people to go out to the theater. Film directors want people to see things in the theater, on the big screen, at least the first time. So that's a good thing. As for the book being broken up into two films, I think it's a good idea. There's so much material in the final book that I think it's warranted.
How would you direct Breaking Dawn? Very carefully, because I think that you want to deliver the fans a faithful version of the book that they love. Yes, there's a lot of extraordinary goings-on. So it'll have to be done carefully.
How do you think the movie franchise has been affected by using different directors? I think it's good for it, because I think there's a tremendous amount of coherence thanks to a very strong cast, who care about getting their characters right. And I think that the fans' interested will be un-dimmed, and I think it's interesting to see the different visual approaches, different stylistic versions, different choices that different filmmakers take.
Are you excited to see Eclipse, or will you inevitably be thinking about how you would have done it differently? I'm really excited to see it. I'm very excited to see it. I'm sure he's done a really great job. I think that he's, amongst other things, a much better action director than I am. So I'm really keen to see the action sequences. I think that there are a lot of things that I would have been very daunted by the prospect of shooting, which he will have taken in stride. I'm excited to see it whenever I can.

My Guilty Pleasure: Real Housewives of New York City

I may or may not have done an in-seat happy dance when I heard that the promo for the third season of one of my favorite reality shows, Real Housewives of New York City, was here. The Manhattan-based installment of Bravo's franchise is neither the original (that's Orange County) nor the most outrageous (that's Jersey), but there's something about the cast of women - Jill, Bethenny, LuAnn, Ramona and Kelly - that has me addicted.

My addiction has forced me to keep up with the offscreen drama of the NYC ladies, and this new preview of the upcoming season is full of these revelations: LuAnn is now a divorcee on the prowl (and uh, behind the mic), Bethenny is pregnant and engaged, and some wives who shall remain nameless are just as crazypants as ever. If you're judging me for my lowbrow reality love, go ahead, but I dare you to watch this video from the coming episodes and not be entertained. To see it, just read more.

Taylor Lautner Abducted by Another Film

Never underestimate what Twilight can do for a career: Taylor Lautner is adding yet another project to his growing list of upcoming movies. This time around, he's playing a guy who realizes that something sketchy is going on when he discovers his baby photo on a missing persons website. Sounds a whole lot like The Face on the Milk Carton, but everything old is new again in Hollywood, right?

The movie is called Abduction and has already been picked up by Lionsgate after an extensive bidding war. Lautner's going to be quite the busy man: he's also got two more Twilight films to make, plus Stretch Armstrong, Cancun, not to mention a bunch of others that he's rumored to star in.

I'm not surprised that studios are eager to snatch up any chance to capitalize on Twilight's huge fan base, but I'm curious about how Lautner will find the time to star in so many movies (and keep up the bulk required for Breaking Dawn). The real question is whether or not the world will have found a new franchise to worship by the time Lautner makes his way through his long list of films.

Who Wants Another Slice of American Pie?

Yes, you read that right. Apparently Universal Pictures is hoping to make yet another American Pie film with Harold & Kumar scribes Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg.

Not to be confused with the slew of straight-to-DVD Pie sequels, American Pie 4 would be a full-length feature in theaters, and would bring back some of the original cast members. Most of the Pie kids (other than Alyson Hannigan and Seann William Scott) have fallen off the map, so I wouldn't be surprised if the likes of Tara Reid and Chris Klein were interested in a blast from the past.

Still, it should be interesting to see how the franchise's signature raunchy antics will be applied to a bunch of late 20 and 30 somethings - especially since Jim and Michelle got hitched in the most recent installment.

It's been confirmed that the fourth novel in the Twilight franchise, Breaking Dawn, will be split into two movies and that's not all - they may even be in 3-D!

Buzz In: What Are Your Favorite Comic Books?

Paging Seth Cohen: comic book legend Stan Lee is embarking on a new franchise called Super Seven. Lee will be working with Archie Comics to create the new property, which will actually feature Lee himself guiding a group of superhero aliens who have crash-landed on earth. Seven will be a comic book and developed as a TV series and will have an online presence as well.

Given that everything Lee has made is either beloved by fans (or made into a movie - X-Men, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Iron Man are all Lee creations), Seven may be the new comic phenomena.

Although I'm not quite as into comics as my geeky brethren, I had a minor obsession with the X-Men comic books while the animated series was on the air. Were you also into comic books (or are you still)? If so, what were your favorites? Even if you have never picked up a book, do you have a favorite comic book franchise from a TV or movie adaption?
