Movie Preview: Julianne Moore, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in Shelter

Since the success of Shutter Island, I'm definitely in the mood for more chilling mysteries, and Shelter, starring Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers, could possibly be the next quality thriller.

Moore plays Dr. Clare Jessup, a forensic psychiatrist who denies the existence of Multiple Personality Disorder until she meets Adam, a mysteriously afflicted patient played by Rhys-Meyers. Adam's condition causes Clare to question both her scientific and religious beliefs when his other personalities turn out to all be murder victims. Naturally, the good doctor is running for her life - and then, protecting her daughter's.

I love a good story, even if I'm terrified in the theater, and Shelter looks even more spine-tingly than Shutter Island. Brace yourself for some gruesome images in the trailer, and don't say I didn't warn you.

New in Town: Lovin' in the Cold

New in Town is packed with a lot of bad, wrong-headed moves including small-town stereotypes, predictability, conventionality, and in one bizarre scene, hard nipples. Despite a talented and likable cast with wonderful character actors like J.K. Simmons and Frances Conroy, this romantic comedy was probably doomed from the start due to a script that can't decide if it wants to be Fargo, Norma Ray, or Working Girl.

That said, there is something in this movie that no script can write in and that's some honest-to-goodness chemistry between the two leads. Maybe I'm a sucker for Harry Connick Jr., maybe it's rare to witness some genuine onscreen sparks, or maybe I've been suffering too long from generic rom-com fatigue. Whatever the reason, I couldn't help but get a moderate case of the warm fuzzies after watching it.

read more. Renée Zellweger plays Lucy Hill, a tough Miami executive at some kind of food-making corporation who storms around in sky-high heels as if they were running shoes. We see Lucy at a meeting full of suits and jogging on the shore, but beyond that we don't really get any more insight into her character, which is one of the problems with this script. It makes it difficult later on to sympathize with her or even to understand why she does some of the things she does when she has to take over a processing plant located in the frozen tundra of New Ulm, Minnesota. Lucy is sent to lay off a bunch of employees, but the longer she's in town the more she sees how devastating her actions would be to the people of New Ulm who have been so gosh darn nice to her. The plight of the town folks is given voice through the local union rep, Ted (Harry Connick Jr.), who has lots of initial contempt for the new lady in town and sees Lucy as a corporate stooge. Until, of course . . . he doesn't. There are lots of tiresome homespun-isms by the sweet, down-to-earth townspeople, as well as much scrap-booking and tapioca-making, stuff like that. And at first Zellweger plays Lucy as a stiff "ice queen" (another extreme stereotype this movie can claim: that of the callous, powerful working woman). But once things heat up between her and Ted, she warms up and the performance takes on a more natural, playful tone. If fact, it's right in the middle that the characters emerge as more than caricatures and things get charming. Lucy is especially fun to root for midway through because she's smart and determined and also hilariously out of place on dates with Ted. The bottom line is that there is plenty to roll your eyes at, including an ending that's silly and syrupy, but I'll admit it: I laughed and I wanted these two opposite lovebirds to be together forever.

Movie Preview: Renée Zellweger Is New in Town

The trailer for the romantic comedy New in Town, starring Renée Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., seems to tell the whole story, and it looks like a predictable story at that. As the plot description states, "Renée Zellweger stars as a Miami-based consultant whose latest assignment, to restructure a manufacturing plant in small-town Minnesota, causes her to reconsider her professional and personal objectives once she settles into her new life."

And yet, if it's so predictable, why did I laugh out loud a few times while watching the trailer? There's something kind of adorable and funny about this movie, and I'm actually excited to see it. New in Town (which was previously titled Chilled in Miami) opens Jan. 30. To check out the trailer,

Desperate Housewives Rundown Episode Six, "There's Always a Woman"

Lily Tomlin! Frances Conroy! Hooray for some great new blood on Desperate Housewives! Overall I think this week's episode is better than the others have been thus far this season, but in particular, it's so awesome to see these new ladies reinvigorating the show. Tomlin plays Mrs. McCluskey's saucy, smart-talking sister while Frances Conroy (known to Six Feet Under fans as Ruth Fisher) is a massage client of Carlos's who has a very, ah, "special" relationship with him.

read more. Susan - OK, I'll admit, I think the beginning is really funny with Susan blabbing on and on about Jackson to her new painter, an older man who calls her Suzanne by mistake. Of course, in real life, Susan would be insanely annoying, but this scene made me chuckle. After basically telling Jackson she doesn't see a future with him, Susan's now having second thoughts and she goes to Jackson's apartment to talk. Hearing the shower running, she decides to undress and climb in to surprise him. Sigh. If TV's taught me anything it's that the person showering is rarely who you think it is. Susan hasn't been watching the same shows, though, and she comes upon a woman Jackson picked up at a club. The two exchange insults, Jackson returns to the apartment, Susan yells at him and leaves in a huff. Later, Jackson goes to Susan's and eventually they decide to "start over." Bree - Poor Katherine! She has a good point: When she and Bree started the business together, they were two lonely women, doing something for themselves. Now Bree has all this success and is one half of a "power couple" with Orson. So, Bree plays matchmaker and sets up Katherine with Peter, a man Orson says is an old college friend. Who else saw the fact that Peter was really a fellow inmate coming a mile away? What I did not see coming, however, is Peter's history of stealing organs. Gross. Katherine looks so happy after her evening with Peter! But Bree breaks the news to her about Peter's past and Katherine breaks things off. In the end, though, it looks like there might be something promising happening between Katherine and Mike. . . Gaby - I loved this storyline! Carlos inadvertently helps one of his older clients, Virginia Hildebrand (Frances Conroy) have a "happy ending," so to speak, and she tips him very generously. He's done such "wonders" for Virginia, she wants to pay Carlos an extravagant amount to be her personal masseur when she goes to Europe. Gaby, once she finds out about Virginia's happy massages, rejects this idea. . . until Virginia offers to bring Gaby and the girls along and asks if Gaby would like to be her personal shopper. As long as she "doesn't mind being paid in dresses," that is. Of course, this is an offer Gaby can't refuse! Lynette - Lynette comes upon Tom chatting with an attractive woman (the first "dangerous woman" we learn about in the show) and immediately assumes that Tom is having an affair with her. Turns out, this woman is Anne Shilling, real estate agent and mother to Kirby, a friend of Porter's. She helps Tom find a rehearsal space for the band, but Lynette's suspicion is raised once again when Anne drops by the space to hand off some old furniture - including a futon. When Lynette confronts Tom about this, he assures her that he would never hurt her by having an affair. He spots a condom wrapper on the floor and soon discovers that Porter is actually using the rehearsal space as his own personal love lair. What Tom doesn't know: Porter's lady is actually Anne Shilling! Yikes. Lynette follows Tom to the rehearsal space and spots a messily dressed Anne hurrying out the door. She now thinks her suspicions have been confirmed about Tom and Anne, we last see Lynette angrily packing a suitcase. Edie, Dave and Mrs. McCluskey - Mrs. McCluskey pretends to be just a frail, sweet little old lady when Edie comes to visit her in the hospital, when in fact, she's recruiting her brassy, sassy sister Roberta (Lily Tomlin) to help her investigate Dave some more. I can't wait to see more of the snooping sisters - they are so fabulous! Later we learn that Dave had a drug addict brother named Steve who was killed in prison by a fellow inmate. Having recently taken on Gossip Girl books and Dancing with the Stars, The New Yorker now turns its attention to The Hills.
300 director Zack Snyder is set to direct an animated film adaptation of Guardians of Ga'Hoole, writes ComingSoon.
Variety reports that the romantic comedy HangingOutHookingUpFallingInLove has just added an ensemble cast which includes Janeane Garofalo, Jenna Elfman and Rita Rudner, among others.
Kristen Johnston will join Kate Hudson, Anne Hathaway and Candice Bergen in Bride Wars, writes Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, Danny DeVito has been cast in When in Rome alongside Kristen Bell and Will Arnett, reports ComingSoon.
And, some TV casting news: TV Guide reports that Albert Brooks will play Nancy's dad on Weeds, while Variety has news that Six Feet Under mom Frances Conroy has joined the cast of a CBS comedy pilot.
Lifetime will adapt two of bestselling author Patricia Cornwell's novels into TV movies, Zap2It reports.
Billboard has news that My Morning Jacket will make their SNL debut on May 10, and will perform material from their upcoming album Evil Urges.
Apparently, The New York Times reports, many people who call to vote for American Idol can't get the numbers right and bother off-duty notaries and the like instead.
