Chuck's in, FlashForward's Out! Who Else Is in Danger?

The Fall TV season is finally getting fleshed out, as word is rolling in about which of your favorite shows will be coming back - and which we can give a fond farewell. In today's most recent hirings and firings, Chuck is saved! I'm so glad I continued to watch this beloved show despite it being on the bubble (I guess NBC really listened to the fans!).

But in sadder news, the original Law & Order is finally being laid to rest after 20 years on the air. In its place, NBC is reportedly picking up a West Coast version of the show, Law & Order: Los Angeles. Over at ABC, FlashForward has been canceled after being on the rocks, but V is still in.

UPDATE: NBC's Heroes has been officially canceled.

TV Tonight: FlashForward Returns With a 2-Hour Episode

After an extra-long hiatus and a slew of production issues, FlashForward finally returns tonight with a new episode. The last time we saw the crew, Mark resigns from the FBI after being told that he'll be the one to shoot his partner, Demetri. Mark's wife Olivia grows closer with her would-be lover Lloyd, just before Lloyd admits to the world that he caused the blackout and is kidnapped. Mark and Demetri's colleague, Janis, decides to actively try to get pregnant (as she sees in her flash), and Demetri's fiancee, Zoey, realizes that she's slated to attend Demetri's funeral in the future.

The show's had a bit of a rocky start, so I'm hoping the second half will really tie things together - FlashForward is going to need it if it wants to get a second season pickup. Right now the outlook is not exactly stellar, but I'll still be showing the support (plus, I'm just dying to know how many of the visions actually come true). Will you be tuning in?

They're the shows with the mind-blowing storylines that make us go "huh?!" This year, we saw the departure of one of the genre's biggies (Battlestar Galactica) and a cult favorite (Dollhouse). FlashForward Breakdown, "A561984"

This week's episode of FlashForward isn't simply the holiday show - it's the last we'll see of the cast until March! The show was originally scheduled to return in January, but the date was recently pushed back. So is the Fall finale enough keep audiences satisfied for the next three months? I thought it was good, but not that that good.

Holiday tunes are all over this episode, though the characters are too preoccupied to celebrate. Mark and Demetri head to Hong Kong, where they get a very big shock, Lloyd and Simon go public with some of their information about the blackout, and Olivia and Llyod get a little bit closer. Ready for a chat to tide you over for a while? Then just

Killer instinct: Mark and Demetri arrive in Hong Kong and are greeted by an angry phone call from Stan and a local FBI agent who's been waiting for them. Determined to find Nhadra Udaya, aka the woman behind Demetri's phone call, they ignore their superiors and - after a bout of coercion with a shop owner - find her. She's reluctant to give up any information, but then - surprise! She reveals that it's actually Mark who is destined to shoot Demetri on March 15. Mark is even more shocked than I am to hear this news, and he takes the woman hostage in his moment of rage. Stan is obviously not pleased when the news gets back to him, and Mark turns over his gun and badge to Demetri - just to prove to his buddy that he's not going to do anything to jeopardize his partner's life. Oh and D. Gibbons? He's just hanging out with Nhadra. This lady knows far too much.

Front page news: Staying true to his promise, Simon allows Lloyd to make a public announcement about their experiment, admitting that they may have caused the blackout. Naturally this causes a huge uproar, and a woman is taking shots at Lloyd within minutes. Meanwhile, a disgruntled Simon pays a visit to Stan and asks for a job, where he gets a twist of his own: though Simon believes himself to be the inventor of those structures found in Somalia (as it turns out, they're lasers), they were actually erected in 1991 - one year before Simon came up with the idea. Naturally, Simon's a little peeved, but it's Lloyd who gets burned. At the end of the episode, Lloyd is putting Dylan in an ambulance to send him to a hospital that's a little more safe, but the paramedics are actually there to kidnap Lloyd, leaving Olivia holding a frightened Dylan in her arms as the ambulance speeds away.

Secrets and lies: Demetri's fiancee Zoey makes a call to his parents to beg them to come to her upcoming wedding. Since Zoey sees Demetri's parents in her flashforward, their attendance would ensure Demetri's survival, right? Wrong. At a funeral, Zoey realizes that Demetri's disapproving parents would never acquiesce and attend their son's nuptials to a woman of another race - but they would attend his memorial service. When Zoey confronts Demetri's mom, she admits that she knew what the flashforward meant but had been keeping it a secret because she didn't want to believe it. The bright side is that Demetri's mother is finally accepting of Zoey - but is that enough to save Demetri's life?

Other plot points:

Nicole gives Bryce a "good luck in love" gift. But is the gift really meant for Keiko or for herself?
With Bryce's help, Janis officially decides that she wants to get pregnant and heads off to the sperm bank.
Lloyd and Olivia realize that they narrowly missed meeting each other a few years back. Hmm . . .

How'd you feel about the midseason finale? Did you think the holiday tunes were a bit forced (I did, though I did like The Christmas Carol aspect). Do you think Mark will end up shooting Demetri? In the three-minute preview, it looks like the two guys are at odds.

FlashForward Breakdown, "Believe"

The most central characters of FlashForward take a backseat this week, letting Bryce and Aaron take the spotlight. It's a nice relief from Mark and Demetri's constant agonizing over their own fates (though we still get a dose of that, too).

FlashForward Breakdown, "Playing Cards With Coyote"

After Al's tragic suicide on last week's episode of FlashForward, this week shows how the idea of "changing the game" has affected all the characters. Mark and Olivia start to find new hope for their relationship, Lloyd teaches Simon a lesson, and Aaron learns more about where his daughter has been for the past two years.

"The future can be changed": Al's death makes headline news when Celia gets her letter in the mail, instilling hope in Mark and Demetri - for a bit. Mark whisks Olivia off on a romantic getaway and things seem to be much happier between the two. But once they're back to regular life, they both get a reality check: Mark gifts her the lingerie she's wearing in her flash forward, and Aaron's reunion with Tracy makes Mark go back to believing that the visions may be set in stone.

The stars are aligned: Mark thinks he has a big lead when some footage shows up of a man he recognizes from his vision - a woman named Ingrid reports a crime and her phone images reveal a man with a tattoo of three stars on his arm. Thinking it's the same pern who breaks into his office in the future, Mark immediately dedicates himself to finding the guy. Using Ingrid as bait, Mark manages to take kill him, and rushes home to Olivia to tell her that they're going to have a second chance because he changed the game. But then - surprise! There's a whole crew of dudes with that tattoo. Um, seriously Mark? This never occurred to you? It's not like the guy has an unmistakable tattoo of Edward Cullen on his arm.

That was a crazy game of poker: Feeling guilty about that whole deadly experiment thing, Lloyd sends out an email to a few colleagues saying "We have to take responsibility." Of course, Simon isn't pleased about Lloyd's plans to go public and wants to settle their argument over a game of Texas hold 'em. There's plenty of trash talking from Simon, who thinks that he and Lloyd are gods for the impact they've had on the planet. He tosses around ideas of fate (was anyone else thinking about Lost's Charlie and his fate finger tape?) and just when Simon thinks he's sitting pretty, Lloyd turns the tables with a sleight of hand. (Some U2 lyrics come to mind here). Somehow I still don't think Simon is going to make it easy for Lloyd to publicize what they've done.

Reunited and it feels so good? Tracy is back at home with Aaron, but she's not exactly the same girl that went off to war. She's lost her leg in combat and suffering from PTSD, which she's reluctant to discuss with her dad at first. Feeling confident from his flash forward, Aaron encourages Tracy to open up about what happened overseas. She finally reveals that her near-death experience was an ambush from Jericho, a group of military contractors that she ratted out after seeing something she shouldn't. Tracy is paranoid after living a life on the run for two years (and is not at all pleased when Aaron talks to Mark about her situation). Though keeping track of all the different characters and their separate story lines is getting confusing, I'm liking this new development in Aaron's story.

Other plot points:

Janice tries to quit but Stan won't let her. As she continues to contemplate Al's death and her vision, she starts looking into sperm donation - does this mean those are tears of joy in her flash forward?

Ingrid says that she remembers one of the shooters saying "QED," which is also brought up during Simon and Lloyd's poker game.

Ingrid and her bird collection can be added to the list that already includes the crows and the bird crashing into Fiona's window.

So, is that Simon strangling Nicole in her vision? Creepy. I'm wondering if she finds out his secret and tries to intervene.
