Precious Leads the 2010 Independent Spirit Award Nominations

Matt Dillon and Taraji P. Henson were up to announce the 2010 Independent Spirit Awards nominations this morning in LA, and the nominees are making me smile: Precious is represented in almost every major category, with nods for the director, actresses, screenplay, and film. And though they're yet to be released, both The Last Station and A Single Man won several nominations, which is only upping my anticipation for them. One thing I can't resist mentioning? (500) Days of Summer received nods for best feature and best male lead for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

TV Today: The Independent Spirit Awards, Twice

Can't wait till the Oscars for your awards fix this weekend? Well today, you can get a quirky take on the red carpet and awards show fun with Film Independent's Spirit Awards live at 5 p.m. Eastern/2 p.m. Pacific on IFC. If you're unable to catch it live in the afternoon, an edited version will re-air on AMC at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.

This year's host is funny man Steve Coogan, star of Hamlet 2, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does with the show's free-flowing format. Based on some recent Twitter updates from last year's host, Rainn Wilson, I'm sure the night will offer up some memorable moments. Rachel Getting Married Leads 2009 Independent Spirit Noms

After all the acclaim heaped on Rachel Getting Married, the family drama starring Anne Hathaway, it makes sense that the movie would lead (along with two other films that also received six nominations each: Sundance favorites Ballast and Frozen River) the year's batch of nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards.

Other titles in the Best Feature category include the heartbreaking Wendy and Lucy, starring Michelle Williams, and the Mickey Rourke drama The Wrestler. Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona is getting some love, with acting nominations for Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz and a Best Screenplay nomination for Allen. Milk scored several nominations as well, including a Best Actor nod for Sean Penn and a Best Supporting Actor for James Franco.

Announcing the 2008 Independent Spirit Awards Nominees

Last year it was all Sunshine all the time when Little Miss Sunshine took home the majority of the Independent Spirit Awards, given out yearly by Film Independent. This year, the nominations are dominated by Juno, the teen pregnancy dramedy opening December 14, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and to a lesser degree I'm Not There.

Some of the nominations have me squealing with delight: Chiwetel Ejiofor nominated for Best Supporting Male for his outstanding performance in Talk to Me, Julie Delpy's 2 Days in Paris nominated for Best First Feature, and the Irish musical Once nominated for Best Foreign Film. Yet then there's the heartbreaking nomination of Waitress for Best Screenplay, which (if it wins) would have been given to Adrienne Shelly had she not tragically died last year.

Julie Andrews on the Importance of Princess Culture, Princess Kate, and Her Favorite Roles

It's hard not to become giddy when talking about Julie Andrews. The legendary actress's career spans more than 50 years, with multiple generations of families still enjoying her library of work together - from Mary Poppins to The Princess Diaries. What many people don't know is that the 76-year-old Academy Award winner is also the coauthor - with her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton - of more than 20 children's books, including the just-released The Very Fairy Princess: Here Comes the Flower Girl!, part of the "Very Fairy Princess" series.

As far as meeting her in person - well as someone who can still recite virtually every line of The Sound of Music, it's a totally surreal experience. From the beautiful English accent that spoke to me from my favorite films to the fact that she still exudes the authoritativeness of the governesses she played, the experience was almost regal - which is why Andrews is perfectly cast as the spokeswoman for Disney and Target's first National Princess Week, which runs from April 22-28. I met up with the living legend, her daughter, and her granddaughter at a princess-themed tea - feather boas, scepters and all - to discuss the relevance of princesses today, working motherhood, and her favorite roles over the years.

On why playing princesses is really OK:
Julie Andrews: "My personal take on it is that they may be trying on for size what it feels like to be, say, a real lady. [It] perhaps, in some way, helps them find their own identity later in life. I do think fantasy and play of this kind - whatever it is, if you want to play at being a nurse, or if you want to play at being a florist - it's all important and should be allowed, because it would be an awfully sad place if we didn't try on those airs and have fun doing it."

On raising strong, independent, confident women in a culture saturated with princesses:
Emma Walton Hamilton: "Sometimes I think princesses are given an unfair rap. We compiled a list of over 70 contemporary princesses. In doing the research for that, I was reminded once again of the extraordinary work princesses do in the world. The charitable contributions, the causes they champion, the amount of good and service they contribute and provide. I think they're a wonderful example of being strong, feminine, and kind, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that."

On her favorite Disney princess:
Julie Andrews: "Mine has to be, because I've been involved with it, Cinderella. I played Cinderella when I was about 17 years old in England, and then when I came to America it was the first Rodgers and Hammerstein musical they wrote for me. So for me Cinderella has always resonated. And I love the rags to riches, kind of like my own story in a little way."

Michelle Williams Takes My Week With Marilyn to Japan

Michelle Williams donned a Grecian-style Alexander McQueen gown for today's premiere of My Week With Marilyn in Japan. She packed up and headed to Asia after a stay in LA that included attending the Oscars at the end of last month, and also reportedly spending time at Chateau Marmont with Jason Segel. The role of Marilyn Monroe earned Michelle an Oscar nomination, and netted her new statues from the Independent Spirit Awards, a Golden Globe, and a Hollywood Film Festival Award for best actress. Her movie is coming out on DVD in the US today, but opens in Japan on March 24. Next up for Michelle may be a trip home to the Big Apple, where her movie Take This Waltz will screen next month during the Tribeca Film Festival.

Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor Let Loose to Celebrate Their NYC Screening

Costars Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor teamed up in NYC last night for a screening of their independent film Salmon Fishing in the Yemen at the Crosby Street Hotel. They were joined by fellow actor Patricia Clarkson, who came out to lend her support to the project. Emily and Ewan premiered the film in LA on Monday, and today the feature rolls out to a nationwide audience. Emily paired perfect cat-eye makeup with a Naeem Khan dress and Chopard jewels for her West Coast appearance, but for her latest stop she went with another chic black and white look. Next month Emily returns to the big screen in a comedy, The Five-Year Engagement, sharing the spotlight with Jason Segel.

Chris Pine Joins Zoe Saldana and Zachary Quinto on the Set of Star Trek

Star Trek 2 costars Chris Pine and Zoe Saldana hopped on the back of a golf cart in LA yesterday and got a ride to the set. The pair arrived in their street clothes, though last week we saw Zoe battling enemies in her sexy uniform. Zachary was also on location and ready for another day of work on the J.J. Abrams directed sequel. He was spotted leaving the makeup trailer in his trademark Spock ears and looking over his lines.

The weekend gave Zoe, Chris, and Zachary a break from filming long enough to enjoy and participate in the official end to award season. Chris made an appearance at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday while Zachary walked the red carpet at Sunday's Oscar ceremony. Zoe slipped into a Marios Schwab party dress, and hung out with boyfriend Bradley Cooper at Vanity Fair's annual post-Oscar bash.
