Bad Idea of the Week: Ferris Bueller's Day Off 2

What's almost worse than making remakes of beloved '80s films? Making sequels to beloved '80s films! Especially when it's a sequel to a John Hughes movie that might be made 21 years after the first one and probably won't be directed by Hughes himself.

That's right, folks, apparently screenwriter Rick Rapier has written the script for Ferris Bueller 2: Another Day Off in which Bueller, now 40 years old, has turned his motto "Life Moves Pretty Fast" into a self-help motivational career with his buddy Cameron managing the thriving business.

Rapier provided TampaBay.com blog, StuckInThe80s, with a copy of the script which they deemed "a blast." The blog is now claiming that fans of the original would love a sequel.

The plot is this: "Despite his phenomenal success, Ferris is a bit distracted on his 40th birthday (which, considering his massive fame, is being watched on pay-per-view TV by millions of devoted fans). He decides to take the day off, sending Cameron, his business associates and family into a frenzy." Rapier reportedly wants all the original actors to come back to reprise their roles, and has included each of them in the sequel's story:

Ferris' sister Jeannie (Jennifer Grey) is married to the boy she met in the police station (Charlie Sheen).
No longer a school administrator, [Principal] Rooney is still stalking Ferris for revenge.
The economics teacher played by Ben Stein now is an airline gate representative.
Ferris' girlfriend Sloane Peterson (Mia Sara) is a Hollywood star going through a rough marriage.

Matthew Broderick has had a long career, but many of us will always think of him as Ferris Bueller. Apparently, he's OK with that, because in this Honda commercial set to air during this weekend's Super Bowl, Broderick brings old Ferris back in "Matthew Broderick's Day Off." He's playing himself, but he's got all of the classic Bueller antics down, like playing hooky from work and goofing off all day to tool around in his Honda CR-V. Sure, the car stuff feels forced, but it's worth it to watch Broderick uttering some of the same classic lines from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Watch now.

Sarah Jessica Parker left her NYC home Friday with two of her three children. Her 10-year-old son James Wilkie Broderick led the way to their car, while SJP followed carrying Loretta, one of her twin girls. It seems baby Tabitha didn't go along for the outing, but she's often seen exploring the Big Apple with mom SJP and Loretta.

Yesterday was a special occasion for the family, as Matthew Broderick's Ferris Bueller Super Bowl ad aired. However, SJP doesn't care for the Super Bowl too much. The actress, who's fresh from filming a small part in Lovelace, said recently, "I can tell you honesty, I will not be watching the football game. I have absolutely no interest. . . How long does [the game] last? Up to four hours? Really? If I had four hours of leisure time, I would watch the first episode of Luck and start the first season of Mad Men or Downton Abbey. You get my point."

You've Heard of Slow Food, What About Slow Parenting?

The wise Ferris Bueller once said, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Families embracing the concept of slow parenting movement would certainly agree. The "slow family" style isn't a totally new concept - it has popped up as an alternative to the popular and often satirized helicopter mom archetype for the past several years. Families who embrace slow parenting feel that in general, kids these days are overscheduled, overstressed, overextended: basically overparented. Believers in the "slow" philosophy advocate fewer after-school activities, more time with the family, less TV, and more time playing outside.

The movement might have gotten off to a - slow - start, but it seems to be picking up some momentum lately, probably due to some combination of Tiger Mom backlash, a down economy, and a growing trend focused on simplicity and getting back to basics.
