Geek Shot: Stars at the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards

Geeky stars flooded the stage during Saturday's 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards. Zach Levi played host for the night, Felicia Day looked fantastic in an orange mini dress, Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, and Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto accepted the Video Game Hall of Fame Award, and deadmau 5 was on hand to make a musical appearance.

We got our first look at Dragon Age: Redemption starring Felicia Day back in February, but now that the six-part miniseries is just around the corner (the first episode airs online on Oct. 11), we finally get to check out the full trailer. You only have to wait a few more days to see one of our favorite geek girls in action, so until then, get a sneak peek below.

Swords Are Swinging in Felicia Day's Dragon Age: Redemption

Even if you're not a fan of the Dragon Age franchise, you're probably going to want to catch one of our favorite geeks, Felicia Day, in her latest web series. Since unleashing the World of Warcraft-themed web show The Guild (and making a few awesome music videos), Felicia is continuing her web/video game entertainment series' domination with six-part Dragon Age: Redemption.

Kicking off this Summer, the series follows Felicia as Tallis, an Elven assassin, as she embarks on a quest to track down a dangerous mage during the same time period as Dragon Age II (which hits consoles on Mar. 8). There's not a whole lot to see in the trailer just yet (the agony!), but if you're a fan of Felicia Day (and why wouldn't you be?), it's worth checking out.

Geeks We Love: Felicia Day of The Guild

We've loved Felicia Day even before she made us LOL during her first The Guild music video last year. Not to mention the fact that Felicia has starred and guest-starred in several geek-worshipped shows like Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and of course the online sensation The Guild (Season Three is available for download on iTunes now, and DVD on Feb. 15 for those of you who want to relive the magic), which makes her one of the more recognizable figures in geek culture today.

Felicia is not only a fabulous actress, but she's also an inspiration for geek girls everywhere - talented, beautiful, and knows her way around an MMO. Truth be told, we've got a bit of a girl crush.

Why do you think online gaming (and World of Warcraft in particular) is so close to people’s hearts and so widely accepted among such a variety of people?
It's hard to create a community in real life now, most of us don't even know our neighbors, our lives are so spread out between home and friends and work. Online gaming allows you to create a home and community of sorts, as well as provides engaging entertainment. I personally would rather be solving puzzles and finishing quests than passively absorbing a TV show or movie.

Do you think gaming and technology brings people closer together, or creates more of a distraction in relationships?
It depends on the person and how you use it. I certainly have been annoyed by people fiddling with their phones while I'm physically sitting across from them, but at the same time I keep in touch with my brother much better over the Internet than when we ever lived in the same city. I think the thing to be careful of is that technology or gaming doesn't become exclusionary to the people physically in your life.

read more. What are some of your favorite/least favorite tech and/or gaming trends? I'm very excited about 3-D entering into gaming. And technology like NATAL, where you're wholly and "physically" present in a virtual world, is so exciting, I can't wait to see what people develop for it. I also like the fact that casual gaming is experiencing a resurgence, I think that it will get a lot more people playing. I'm not crazy about the whole "watch this cut scene of stiff puppets with bad acting," but I think that is indicative of a larger trend that will be melding games and movies more and more. For that I'm excited. Have you ever been served a geeky pick-up line? What are some of your favorites? I don't remember a lot of pick up lines, I do get a lot of references to my hair and skin color, and someone offered to be my "WOW husband" over Twitter the other day. I guess for in-game only? Yeah, that was odd. Are there any gadgets that you just can’t live without? I love my Kindle. I'm a book lover and I didn't think I'd love it, but I eat up books on the thing. The convenience of ordering a book and have it downloaded instantly is fantastic. I really like the little chatpad I have for my Xbox controller because I can't type on it otherwise, and I love my DS for plane trips. Oh, and my iPhone for the Yelp App, so I never lack for a good cup of coffee in a strange city. Do you ever Google yourself to keep up on what fans are saying? I don't think there's a way for me to not hear what fans are saying, between Twitter and Facebook and Google Alerts etc; etc; It definitely keeps you humble, but it also keeps me going because I hear first-hand that people enjoy what I do. Or not. That's the great thing about the Internet, everyone has an opinion and a venue to express it. What will you be doing this Valentine’s Day? I will be doing a fan convention in Maryland. My boyfriend and I actually don't celebrate it, it's kind of a manufactured holiday to sell greeting cards and bad chocolates, right? And I think holiday prix fixe menus are a scam. The Guild Cast in Cheeky Video About Online Avatars

With the third season of the web based series The Guild starting August 25, the fantasy MMO characters are appearing in a new music video called, "Do You Want to Date My Avatar?" With The Guild star Felicia Day serenading us with lines like, "You'll never see my actual face, our love will be in virtual space." The video basically mocks all of the stereotypes associated with people having really hot avatars in role playing games like World of Warcraft. The beat is catchy and the lyrics are even better.

House Rundown: Episode 2, "Not Cancer"

If you asked me what House needed, I think the last thing I would have said is another character. But that's what we got anyway on Tuesday, when Michael Weston arrived as Lucas, a new private investigator House hired. House creator David Shore is tossing around the idea of building a spinoff around Lucas if the character clicks with the audience, so I'm curious to know if he clicked with you. That and more on this episode when you

read more. I have a hard time not thinking of Michael Weston as "that guy who attacked David Fisher on Six Feet Under," and even looking at him on screen can stress me out. That, coupled with the over-the-top quirkiness of his first scene (seriously, he sneezes like that?), turned me off to the character right away. I'm also not convinced that Lucas is actually a very good private eye. Having a signature item of clothing - argyle socks! - seems uniquely stupid. That said, I warmed to Lucas as the episode went along. House needs a friend right now (did anyone else love the scene of him "auditioning" a potential soulmate in the cafeteria?), and Lucas is, if not exactly a friend, at least someone for House to talk at - for a few hundred bucks an hour, anyway, with an additional fee tacked on if the job requires almost killing someone. Plus, Lucas's undercover posing led to one of the best lines of the night: Cuddy's "Why does it cost $2,300 to fix a coffee machine?" Meanwhile, it was pretty clever to give House a possible cancer case so soon after Wilson's departure. House is really lonely right now (probably not as much as Wilson was after House inadvertently killed his girlfriend, but still), and finding out that Wilson isn't even mentioning him has to hurt. I loved the scene with House at Wilson's door, and I also love that Wilson is sticking to his resolution to stay away. It would have been easy to get them back together - but it's so much better to have Wilson tell House that the next time House is at the door, he's not even going to answer. Speaking of the case, I thought it was a pretty interesting one, with the team trying to figure out what disease could be affecting several different patients in several very different ways. But wow, was there a lot of gross-out medical stuff between the "sewage"-spilling and the brain-cutting. Ew. Some other thoughts:

House always seems to do better work when he connects with his patient, and I like the way he and this patient bonded over a shared sense of disappointment in the world. But it turns out her dismay was partially a result of her brain not working right and dulling how she saw things. So, is there something dulling how House sees the world, and would he ever fix it?
Kutner doesn't solve the case, but he once again pitches a diagnosis and a plan nobody else had tried. He may seem like a bumbling fool, but he seems to come up with interesting answers pretty often.
I was glad to see Cuddy finally do something about House being so unethical - but even posting guards outside an ICU can't keep him from getting his way.
Looking for Cameron, Chase, and Cuddy is starting to feel like Where's Waldo?

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog Is Awesome, and Now Working Just Fine

I would have posted this yesterday when the first act of Joss Whedon's online musical series was available online except for the fact that it wasn't actually available for most of the day. All the fans (like me) who were lured in by the funny preview for the series were trying to view the first webisode, and too many curious eyes caused the site to slow to a halt.

Now it's working fine and it is my pleasure to announce that Act I of this funny, bizarre musical starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion is awesome. It's adorable and sweet and tons of fun to watch. The first few minutes of Dr. Horrible just talking to camera is a little slow, but once you get through that, there's a super-cute little musical number/love song set in a laundromat and the rest flows along nicely from there.

The only thing I'm not getting is why it's called "sing-along" when there's no real way to sing along (unless you watch a few times, I guess!). Tell me your thoughts below after watching the first act here. Enjoy!

Teaser for Joss Whedon's Web Series Starring NPH

Joss Whedon + Neil Patrick Harris + Nathan Fillion = awesome and hilarious. But of course, we already knew Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog would probably be great even back in March when we first heard the news. Now there's a teaser trailer for the musical Internet series, and it's campy, wacky, funny and adorable. As we learned before, the story is about "a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to."

Joss Whedon's Other New Project Is . . . a Musical With NPH

So we've already heard the news that Joss Whedon, the man responsible for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is hitting television again this Fall with Dollhouse, a Fox series starring Eliza Dushku. That's all well and good. But what if I told you there was another Whedon project in the works, starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion? And what if I told you they'd be singing?

Well, that nutty news is totally true. The project is a three-part Web musical called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, and Whedon described its plot like this: "It's the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to." NPH plays Dr. Horrible, Fillion is Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (Buffy's Vi) plays the cute girl in question, Penny.

Did I mention they sing?

The project, which will be about 30 minutes long in all, was co-written by two of Whedon's brothers and one soon-to-be sister-in-law and started shooting this past weekend. There's no word yet on when it might actually hit the web, but I'll be keeping an eye out - this one's just too crazy to ignore.
