Paul Giamatti and Benicio Del Toro Make Two of Three Stooges

Funny filmmaker Peter Farrelly revealed to The Boston Globe that he and his brother Bobby have settled on a replacement for Sean Penn as Larry in their Three Stooges movie: Paul Giamatti. He joins the already-cast Benicio Del Toro (apparently "one Hollywood's biggest Three Stooges fans"), who will star as Moe. Though there was talk previously of Jim Carrey taking on the role of Curly, Farrelly said that this is not the case, and he didn't offer up any other names.

When I did a Recast challenge for the Three Stooges long before there was news of an actual movie, John C. Reilly was the winning choice for Curly, which I could easily envision with Giamatti and Del Toro. What do you think? Who should play Curly in the Farrelly Bros. movie?

Are You Glad Sean Penn Dropped Out of the Stooges Movie?

Sean Penn needs a little break. The Oscar-winning actor has abruptly pulled out of several projects, including the new Farrelly Brothers comedy, The Three Stooges. The casting for this movie has always been a little, well, odd to me, with Jim Carrey set to play Curly, Benicio Del Toro as Moe, and Sean Penn as Larry.

What do you think about Penn dropping out? Is it good to see a spot open up for an actor who is potentially better suited for this comedy (like Will Arnett, Martin Short, or Robert Downey Jr., as MTV suggests)? Or were you fine with the idea of Penn playing Larry?

Are These Three the New Stooges?

I've been curious about the Farrelly Brothers' Three Stooges project for a while now, and "curious" is also the word I'd use to describe today's casting news. Sean Penn is, as rumored, on board to play Larry, and Jim Carrey has entered negotiations to play Curly. And while nobody's officially claimed the role of Moe, The Hollywood Reporter says Benicio del Toro has been named as a possibility.

So, let's take a look at these three. Could they be funny together? With the exception of Carrey, none of them is particularly known for being funny solo, but maybe there's a hidden world of pratfalls and "nyuk-nyuk"s buried deep inside of them. Also of note, this tidbit about the project itself:

Originally constructed as four separate shorts, the feature screenplay has since been streamlined into a single narrative. Included in the story line is an opening that shows the Stooges as kids in an orphanage, a device that will require some Benjamin Button-style visual trickery to place the adult actors' heads on child actors' bodies.

So, it seems we've got a lot to talk about. How do these three potential Stooges-to-be stack up to your recast picks (I can't believe they wouldn't/couldn't get John C. Reilly)? And how are you feeling about the project itself at this point?

Farrelly Brothers's Three Stooges Movie Gets Greenlit

It was mostly a rumor a year ago, but now it's for real: The Farrelly Brothers (those ol' kooks behind There's Something About Mary, Dumb and Dumber, and others) have decided that modern-day moviegoers "deserve their own Stooges" and have gotten MGM to back their Untitled Three Stooges Project. The MGM press release continues:

The Farrelly Brothers have been working on a modernization of the Stooges, "slapstick with heart" concept since the mid-90s. But it was their decision to focus on an origin story for Larry, Moe and Curly and thus introduce the three to a new generation that pushed the picture onto the fast track.

"We love The Stooges! They have been sending the world into hysterics for more than 80 years." [Peter] Farrelly continued, "Movie goers today deserve their own Stooges and we look forward to introducing them to a new generation of knuckleheads."

What do you think about remaking The Three Stooges for the big screen? A while back I asked you guys if you thought the Farrelly Brothers should fold up their director's chairs and refrain from making any more films, and many of you said they should. Is this a good project for them?

Should the Farrelly Brothers Make More Movies?

Today there's news of yet another comedic adventure coming from the Farrelly Bros., this one with the classy title Beaujolais. The movie is described as "a redneck action-adventure with a protagonist along the lines of an Austin Powers or Ace Ventura."

After suffering through their remake of The Heartbreak Kid last Fall and seeing the disappointing outcome of their TV series Unhitched, I might be pretty much done with these dudes. I wonder if they peaked with earlier movies like Dumb and Dumber and There's Something About Mary. Or, could it be that in this atmosphere of Apatow and Juno, audiences are looking for something more than slapstick, gross-out humor and flimsy plotlines?

What do you think? Will you give the Farrellys more chances?

First Look: Unhitched

If you've been missing Rashida Jones ever since Karen Filippelli left Dunder Mifflin's Scranton branch, your wait is almost over. Unhitched, the new Fox comedy starring Jones, Craig Bierko, Johnny Sneed, and Shaun Majumder as four newly single, 30-something friends living together in Boston and attempting to restart their romantic lives, is set to premiere Mar. 2.

Bierko's Jack "Gator" Gately is a recent divorcee who still believes he can find "the one." He probably can't get any good advice from his friend Tommy (Sneed), a womanizing beer brewer who's been divorced three times already. Rounding out the guys' section is Freddy (Majumder), a heart surgeon who hasn't been on a date since approximately 1992. Then there's Kate (Jones), a lawyer who's - conveniently - handled all three of the guys' divorces and now is reentering the rocky dating pool herself after being dumped by her fiancé of seven years.

The comedy comes from the Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber, Shallow Hal, There's Something About Mary), and whether you like their particular brand of bawdy humor will probably have a lot to do with your feelings about these first clips from Unhitched. In one, Tommy picks up a girl at the ATM and goes home with her, only to walk in on an intervention her family is holding to talk about her sex addiction. In the other, Gator ends up in a kinky sex scene with a monkey. Oh, those Farrelly Bros., always pushing the envelope.

What's Your Favorite Farrelly Bros. Movie?

The Heartbreak Kid's so-so box office showing over its opening weekend has caused some people to wonder about the relevance of the Farrelly Brothers these days. It does seem to be the Age of Apatow, and perhaps the Farrelly Brothers' particular brand of comedy is something of the past. Yet their movies undeniably appeal to some people, and I myself have really enjoyed a few of them.

What about you? Which of the Farrelly Brothers' flicks have you liked the most? (I'm going to go ahead and leave off some of their less popular titles, like Shallow Hal.)

First Look: The Heartbreak Kid

It may not be coming out until October, but the trailer for the Farrelly brothers' next movie The Heartbreak Kid recently hit the Web and has started to stir up some buzz. Ben Stiller is back to doing adult comedy again, and it looks like he's matured a bit lately. Actually, he looks a little tired. He plays commitment-phobic Eddie who decides to suddenly take the plunge and marry Lila (Malin Akerman), who seems like the perfect woman. Of course, nobody's perfect, though, and Eddie starts to discover his dream girl is more of a nightmare. Rob Corddry plays Eddie's supportive friend, which is awesome.
