Movie Preview: Valentine's Day Starring Everyone

By now you've probably seen the myriad on-set shots for the upcoming ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day. Oh and by "ensemble", I mean the most star-studded cast to hit Hollywood in years.

This movie has (take a deep breath with me) Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jamie Foxx, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Emma Roberts, Jennifer Garner, Eric Dane, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, Shirley Maclaine, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, and Taylor Swift. Did I miss anyone? Probably.

Put all these beautiful stars in a rom-com, set the trailer to a booming pop song, and you've got me excited. The preview doesn't give a ton of the plot away (though I can make some educated guesses based on the title), or but I'm already analyzing the couplings we see in the clip. Anne Hathaway and Topher Grace? Brilliant. Bradley Cooper and Julia Roberts? I'm not sure about their chemistry, but I guess he does like older women. Zing!

The only question is, with these components, are we looking at He's Just Not That Into You 2.0 or Love Actually 2.0? Or neither? Watch the new trailer and let me know what you think when you read more.

Grey's Boys Join Valentine's Day Rom-Com

Two handsome McMen of Grey's Anatomy are climbing aboard the already very crowded Garry Marshall rom-com, Valentine's Day. Patrick Dempsey and Eric Dane will join a cast that includes, among others, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Jennifer Garner, Shirley MacLaine, Bradley Cooper and Ashton Kutcher.

The story follows the intersecting love lives of a bunch of LA folks. Dempsey will again be playing a doctor, this time "a married obstetrician dating Garner's character on the sly, with her unaware of his status."

Meanwhile, "Dane will play a quarterback struggling over the decision of whether to retire." Interestingly, though there's no mention of it in today's news piece, the role of the football player has previously been described as a closeted gay character with whom Bradley Cooper's character is in love. I think Cooper and Dane make a pretty cute couple, actually.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 16, "An Honest Mistake"

On this week's Grey's Anatomy, fallout continues from Derek's surgical mistake a couple of weeks back. It was, as the episode title says, an honest mistake, but when surgeons make mistakes, they hold people's lives in their hands. This episode got pretty intense at times; are you ready to talk about it? Just read more.

Here's one thing we know for sure about Derek: He likes to fix things. And here's another thing we know: He hates making mistakes. He probably does believe, deep down, that he's a surgical god. And, like Meredith tells Addison, losing all those patients during the clinical trial has made him care even more. But in this case, that caring backfires. It was one little mistake that caused all of Jen's complications, and Derek is determined to fix it, even when the fixes would leave her with a life not worth living. And so I'm on Addison's side for this one: Jen was already gone; the least they could do is save the baby. (Which they do? I think?) But that's little comfort to Jen's husband, who blames Derek for Jen's death. To him, Derek's not a god; he's not even a guy who tried hard. He's just a murderer.

So, um, Mark picked the worst possible time to tell Derek about dating Lexie, huh? You'd think maybe he could have been a little more aware of what was going on, but regardless, Derek ends up punching him. And punching him again. Had Owen not run in, I think the two of them could have pummeled each other for an hour. Talk about some misplaced anger. But it's a little sweet - if, OK, totally messed up - to see Lexie and Meredith taking care of their guys at the end.

The episode's other big story about the fallibility of surgeons comes from Cristina vs. "The Dinosaur" (Faye Dunaway), Seattle Grace's first female surgeon who's now slipping behind on her medicine. The two of them square off - not surprisingly, The Dinosaur doesn't like being told she's past her prime - but in the end, Cristina's right. After Owen tells her he was fired from the Army because they knew it was time for him to go before he did, she decides this is her last surgery.

Meanwhile, Bailey - who's rocking some new curly locks! - is trying to get her packet together for the pedes surgery fellowship, and the chief won't write her a letter. Or rather, he writes her a form letter, and she's mad: "I am Dr. Bailey. I am better than fine!" But he tells her no way is he going to write her a letter so he can abandon him; she was supposed to be the next chief. (Isn't pedes surgery still surgery, though?)

In other news:

The Dinosaur's statement about interns not learning anything gets echoed in Izzie's story. Izzie's blood sample - shock! - got messed up, and she's now playing Dr. House with the interns, giving them all her test results (anonymously, of course) and having them figure out what's wrong with her.
I seriously love Arizona Robbins. And I think I'd love her with Callie, because they're equally sharp-tongued: "I spend my entire day around newborns, so I try not to in my personal life." I got a chuckle out of Callie's big "I was in the Peace Corps! I cook!" speech getting stopped by Arizona introducing Callie to her date. Yeesh.
Izzie whining to Bailey about how the interns screw everything up is pretty classic considering how Bailey almost certainly said the same thing about Izzie.
I call overuse of dramatic drumbeats during the fight between Cristina and the Dinosaur. Come on, it wasn't that big a moment.
Owen wants to be around 40 years from now!

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 15, "Before and After," and Private Practice Rundown: Episode 16, "Ex-Life"

With a special crossover event comes a special crossover recap! On this week's two-hour Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice combo, Addison and Naomi (and eventually Sam) take Archer to Seattle Grace in the hopes that Derek can treat the parasites in Archer's brain. The old med school friends reminisce about the lives they used to have, before divorces and children and those other complicated things.

Meanwhile, Cristina learns about Owen's mystery woman, Alex starts to suspect something is really wrong with Izzie, and - back in Santa Monica - Violet faces one of her biggest fears about motherhood. Ready to talk about it? Just read more.

When Grey's was just starting out, it was about two very distinct groups of people: the interns, who mostly acted like children, and the attendings, who were occasionally sloppy messes but were ultimately still adults. Private Practice, I always thought, was meant to put the spotlight on people in the "adult" phase, and the jury's still out on whether that experiment will be successful, but for these two episodes, the focus on the older crowd worked for me. I actually felt somehow cheated that we'd never gotten to see Addison, Derek, Naomi, Sam, and Mark interact before. Hearing the song Derek wrote for Addison and performed at their wedding, watching Addison test Derek's medical skills and having Derek rise to the challenge, hearing Archer list off all the sins he'd perpetrated on Addie's friends over the years - I guess it felt like what might have happened if Shonda Rhimes had decided to move all of Addison's favorite people to Seattle for the spinoff rather than take Addison away.

But I'm getting a little ahead of myself. Addison and Naomi arrive at the hospital (followed in short order by Sam, who says he has no idea what he's doing there; that makes all of us) with Archer in tow, and Addison essentially asks Derek for a miracle. He doesn't think he can pull it off - and, for what it's worth, Archer hates Derek and so doesn't think he can do it, either - but for Addison, he'll try. Addison says she made Derek very small in her mind after the divorce so she could move on, but now she needs him to be the great and powerful surgeon she always pumped him up to be. And he is; he gets all the worms out (despite one dicey moment) and Archer's back to being an ass in no time.

But Derek's brilliance doesn't last: Performing Jen's aneurysm surgery right after Archer's procedure, he nicks part of her brain, and things go terribly wrong. Addison ends up involved, trying to treat Jen's sick son, and this time, she's the one who needs to be the surgical goddess. It's an interesting flip of the tables to see Addison up against the wall with Derek relying on her to save a life. And again, all seems to have gone right - until the final few minutes, in which Jen starts babbling nonsensically.

The medical stories are fine, but honestly, once Archer seemed to be stable, I stopped focusing on the medicine and started paying better attention to the relationships between these old friends. I loved Sam reconnecting with Derek, Sam saying he got a midlife crisis earring and Derek assuring Sam that Meredith isn't a midlife crisis girlfriend. I chuckled at Addison talking to Mark, having Mark respond in a professional manner, and Callie immediately stepping in to explain that Mark's met someone and thus wouldn't be responding as his typical lothario self. And I loved them dancing and drinking at the bar, like it really was the afterparty of some school reunion.

But beyond their stories, a ton of other things happened, too; here's a quick scoop:

Owen's mystery woman turns out to be his ex-fiancee, whom he dumped in a two-line email and then hadn't told he was back from war. In fact, Owen hasn't told anyone he's back from war, even his mother, because he doesn't want them to see the hardened person he's become.
Izzie's game for the interns is cute and clever - and makes no logical sense, but I'll ignore that - but it's mostly useful because it gives Alex another indication that something might be really wrong with Izzie. In addition to that whole dead-boyfriend thing, she now doesn't seem to be seeing very well. Alex loves her, but he really wants to run.

George helps get Sadie kicked out of the program! Or she quits - whatever - because she's exposed during the game for knowing nothing. She tells Meredith she'd hoped Mere would pull her through, and Mere tells her to grow up.
Sam has an asthma attack, and his friends theorize it's because he's freaking out over Naomi being with another man. But it's actually just because Bailey gave him an inhaler he was allergic to. Um, whoops?
The moment with Addison and Callie in the chapel is sweet: Callie offers up a prayer that serves to tell Addison she's kissing women now, then switches gears and assures Addison that "you're an amazing doctor who saves babies. God knows who you are."
I'm relieved that Charlotte finally gets why Cooper's moved in with Violet, even if she still doesn't completely agree with it. When Violet starts worrying that she, too, could develop postpartum depression, Cooper sweetly lists off the things he'll do to keep her rested and sane.
Addison: "We called Meredith the 12-year-old. What do we call Lexie, the preschooler?" Mark: "She's a woman."

Overall, I think the smaller moments in these episodes worked best for me, the ones where we got to see the friendships that brought Addison and Derek together and led Sam and Naomi to marry and form their practice in the first place. I'm relieved that Meredith didn't freak out over the rose petal and that Archer didn't die, big things that could have potentially thrown the whole story off course. I'm a little worried about the promos for next week, with all the "Surgeon . . . or God?" stuff, but we'll cross that bridge in a bit. For now, tell me: How did the first real installment of this crossover work out for you?

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 16, "Freedom"

The three words uttered most often during the season finale of Grey's Anatomy were "really big trauma." They were used in reference to a teenager who was dared to lay in a vat of cement at a construction site, after which he was encased in several tons of concrete - yeah, you can say "really big trauma" again. As is often the case with Grey's, those three little words paralleled what was happening in the lives of the doctors too.

Let's start with Meredith who was continuing the brain-tumor clinical trials with Derek. Due to medical regulations, they were allowed only one more day to succeed (following a staggering 11 deaths). To discuss what happened in this situation and with all the other residents' traumas, read more.

Of course, in true finale style, Derek and Meredith at first failed, but then miraculously succeeded at their difficult task. Meredith's personal life, unsurprisingly, rivaled the trauma going on with work. She finally made some progress with her therapist about her mother's attempted suicide. Progress that her therapist told her she'd have to figure out for herself. Was anyone else as confused as Meredith? Her discovery at the end of the episode was more fulfilling than I was expecting it to be, and she also made some exciting progress with Derek.

The other rather traumatic plot line of the night belonged to Alex. His pseudo-girlfriend Rebecca turned out to be just as delusional as last week's episode had foreshadowed. Rebecca even tried to commit suicide, but when Izzie suggested that she needed psychiatric help, Alex got, let's say. . . defensive. In the end, Rebecca proved to have underlying borderline personality disorder. I doubt we'll be seeing her much, if at all, next season.

Christina got out of the slump that she's been wallowing in since the show returned from its break. This was, most notably, because she received the sparkle pager. The pager allowed her to take any surgery she wanted, and as a result she was able to showcase her skills on the cement boy. Luckily, she was able to save the boy's life, a feat that made Erica Hahn extremely jealous. I knew Christina's tenure with Burke would prove beneficial.

George had a big night too: He discovered that he only failed the boards by one point. He got mad at himself at first, but then asked Richard to retake the boards and thankfully, Richard agreed. Something tells me we'll be seeing George as a resident early next season.

To wrap up the rest of the episode: Izzie was handed full reign over the clinic, Richard went back to his wife, Bailey learned to juggle being a working mom, and oh yeah, Derek promised to dump Rose for Meredith! Looks like the never-ending love saga will continue on through season five. And that makes me happy.

Some other thoughts:

How dramatic was the cement boy story line? I was riveted. This is precisely what I was missing last week.
I especially loved when Miranda tried to calm Mr. Cement down with a Star Wars analogy. Who knew she would prove to have such a vast knowledge of the films?
I laughed out loud when the female tumor patient asked if Derek or Meredith had ever done it. "With each other?" Derek exclaimed. "He's done it and I've done it," Meredith responded. Awkward!
Speaking of sex, the whole Callie, Mark, Erica hypothetical threesome story line kind of bored me. But - shocker lesbian twist at the end.
I'm a little surprised there wasn't a big cliffhanger. Everything seemed to be tied up with a nice little bow, which is unusual for Grey's.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 15, "Losing My Mind"

The second-to-last episode of Grey's Anatomy began with Meredith uttering the words "the only problem with being a resident is, you feel crazy all the time." It just happened to be the perfect setup for the rest of the episode aptly titled "Losing My Mind." Case in point, Crazy Resident No. 1: Meredith. First, she attempted to fire her therapist (most likely because last week she called her a coward). But regardless of how Meredith feels about it, she is a coward! It's annoying week after week how she covertly pines after Derek but then says things like "that's where love exists, in delusional fantasies." It's as if she's trying too hard to prove that she can't - or won't - love him.

Crazy Resident No. 2: Cristina. The first sign of her madness was the scene with her cleaning her apartment, something so not Cristina, but hilarious nevertheless, especially when she tries to vacuum Callie's belongings. But even more telling is her demonic attitude. It's one thing for her to be rude to Lexie (nothing new there) but it's another to see her anger directed at George. Clearly she's still working through some Burke issues. Regardless there was no resolution last night.

Crazy Resident No. 3: Alex. Alex earns the crazy card for defending Rebecca when Izzie clearly warns him that she's not pregnant. Despite the warning, he defends Rebecca but then quickly discovers that she is, indeed, not pregnant. Even weirder is that it seemed like Rebecca truly did believe she was pregnant with Karev's baby. I thought that Grey's would go the deception route, but delusional won out.

Yet despite all of this "craziness," Grey's still seemed a little dull to me this week. Probably because there were no nail-biting surgery scenes, or steamy love affairs (even McSteamy himself seems to be celibate). The dramatic highlight would have to have been the kiss between Callie and Erica and all I could think was "eh."

Some other thoughts:

I love that Lexie finally stood up for herself and called Meredith out for being a bad sister. That was long overdue.
The whole Walter Tapley storyline bored me. Sure, he may have mentored Richard, but demanding that he and Erica perform a life-threatening surgery should have been riveting. It wasn't. Especially when he survived.
Then again, the sap in me got a little teary-eyed at the patient who imagined a boyfriend as a result of her tumor. Shocker when he proved to exist!
I loved this line: "Don't wonder why people go crazy. Wonder why they don't."

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 14, "The Becoming"

My major problem with this episode of Grey's Anatomy can pretty much be summed up by its title: "The Becoming." All the characters still seem stuck. This whole season is supposedly about change, as the promos remind us each week. But here we are, with only two episodes and three hours of Grey's left, and we're still just in the "becoming" phase. I'm ready for some being.

This episode did advance some characters' stories, however slowly: Cristina, Bailey, and Mark - Mark! - had some touching moments. I'd like to say Meredith is ready to make a change, too, but I've been burned on that before. To see my thoughts and add your own, just read more.

As far as Meredith is concerned, what's our big takeaway? That she's delusional? She insisted it was going to be a good day, that she was going to put all her feelings about Derek behind her. And of course that wasn't going to work; every time Meredith has tried to bury it all inside, she's ended up worse for it (including, you know, dead). There's just no way to deny their chemistry when they're "exactly in sync." (How many times, by the way, did that phrase need to be said?) I'm glad Meredith's therapist called her a coward - even if that final scene with them fell a little flat. If Addison's push last week didn't convince her to fight, maybe this one will.

I will say that Grey's had its first scene in a while to make me teary: when Derek showed up with the champagne and told Meredith they'd open it when they have their first success in the trial and toast to all the lives they've lost. Man, I'm a sap.

Speaking of Derek, any hope I'd had that they might try to develop Rose went out the window as soon as we found out Derek and Rose slept together. I thought she wanted it to be special, but instead, we didn't see or hear a thing about it besides Rose requesting some paperwork! Did she get shamed into sleeping with him because everyone else had obviously had intra-hospital sex? That would be interesting, if we were supposed to care about Rose. Which we aren't. So . . . moving on.

The sex forms gave Cristina and Bailey two of their finest moments. Bailey first: She's always prided herself on keeping her personal life private, but now that she's single, the idea that she couldn't possibly be sleeping with someone at work takes on a new meaning. Meanwhile, Cristina spent the whole episode not talking about Burke's award (and singing "Like a Virgin" while slicing open bodies) until blurting out her whole "I was his hand, and now I'm a ghost" speech. Granted, it was a little on-the-nose, but Cristina has a history of that (see also: "I used to have an edge"), so I'm willing to let that ride for the sake of seeing her deal with the difference between who she was with Burke and who she is now.

Some other thoughts:

Mark's plotline with the nurses was supposed to be minor and light until the read-through, when Eric Dane made it so emotional. It was fascinating to watch his bravado break down from the masculine high of "Everything I do is consensual . . . some of them even begged for it."
Did anyone else want to slap Meredith when she announced she was in therapy right in the middle of Cristina's breakdown?
Also, did anyone else think at first that maybe, just maybe, the Chief didn't want Bailey to fill out a form because the two of them had slept together?
It just doesn't seem wise for George to know the sexual history of everyone at Seattle Grace. Don't they have HR?
Alex telling the kids about Snow White dying (but not really!) both made me laugh and broke my heart. He's just so scared that he's not going to be a good dad.

Grey's Anatomy Rundown: Episode 12, "Where the Wild Things Are"

Welcome back, Seattle Grace! I'm sure the simple fact that this was a new episode of Grey's Anatomy after all that time in the great, barren strike wilderness influenced my opinion of this episode, but it was nice good to see everyone back - with their new haircuts, new relationships, and new facial hair statuses.

That said, I think the episode suffered a lot just by being the first one back. Not only did the writers have to fill in the gaps of what happened over the past six weeks, but they also had to move us - quickly! - into the stories for the rest of the season. There was a lot of setup, and a lot of reminders of things that happened before, but not a whole lot of resolution. For my thoughts, just read more.

Let's start with Meredith, because for once, it seems like she's trying. Rather than whining endlessly about her problems, she's started to see a therapist - though doesn’t it just figure that she can talk everyone’s ear off except in therapy? At least it’s a step. And while I think her curiosity about the guy who touched the bear cub was self-interested at first (she wanted the points for solving a medical mystery, and she wanted to know if there was something keeping the guy from being able to love properly), it led to some actual medicine, with Meredith finding a way to save lives.

Of course, that puts her directly in the path of Derek, who's wrapped up in his thing with Rose. The thing is, the Rose story just reeks of filler at this point. We haven't spent enough time with her to care about her; their relationship, after six weeks, still seems like mostly flirting in the hallways. I do wonder, though, if that story would have looked different had the strike not interfered.

The rest of the characters also seemed off in filler-ville, a bit, as their plots seemed constructed to remind us of stuff from earlier this season. Alex: He's a fighter, an underdog - and we still don't why he's so damaged. George complains a lot. Cristina wants to be Hahn, and Hahn thinks Cristina is a bug to be swatted. Izzie can't trust her instincts anymore, to the tune of more than $100,000 in unnecessary medical tests. Got it. Now, let's move on.

Some other thoughts:

Would two interns really only be able to afford a place as squalid as George and Lexie's apartment? I did like seeing Lexie's nesting instinct, though I don't think I'd eat fruit from a bedpan.
Despite the weakness of Izzie's overall plotline, she did get some of the best lines of the night: "I don't need guys, I don't need sex, 'cause this competition is my orgasm." I wonder if her possible lupus diagnosis was a House shout-out?
Speaking of Izzie - remember back when we saw her being a competent doctor working with Hahn and arranging the surgical rooms to be comfortable for her patients? Why can't everyone, including Izzie, just see that she's good at that kind of stuff?
I wonder if the whole contest will have any ramifications down the line, now that Meredith has the sparkle pager.
I’m a little surprised the Chief let Bailey keep Baby Tuck with her. She can’t watch over him like that forever, right?
Still loving the renewed McSteamy/McDreamy bromance.

What worked for you about this return to Seattle Grace - and what did you think was missing? And is anyone as excited as I am to see Addison return and utterly kick ass?
