Madonna, Mariah Surpass Elvis on Billboard Charts

It's a new era of rock, folks. Billboard reports today that singles by Mariah Carey and Madonna have broken chart records previously held by Elvis Presley.

As expected, Mariah Carey moves past Elvis Presley and into sole possession of second place for most No. 1s in the rock era, as "Touch My Body" soars 15-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to become her 18th chart-topper.

Presley will also be nudged from his standing as the artist with the most top 10s in the rock era, as Madonna surpasses him with her 37th top 10, "4 Minutes."

Billboard also points out that digital downloads are helping the singing divas: "'Body's' blast to No. 1 is fueled by a record-setting debut week digital tally of 286,000 downloads," and "Madonna's Hot 100 jump is spurred by stupendous download sales."

Rewind: This Week's Buzz

Blender has compiled a list of the 100 days that changed music. One of these, sadly, is the day Elvis died, the anniversary of which passed this week. Check out three covers of "Suspicious Minds."
I saw Superbad and loved it. I also interviewed the boys from the movie, who are all adorable and hilarious. Michael Cera was even cast in another film, playing yet another awkward teen.
Well, "So You Think You Can Dance" is done for another season. I watched the finale, and then the winner was announced. Tell me: Do you agree with who won?
So many awesome actors in some good-looking trailers this week! Check out Ryan Gosling in Lars and the Real Girl, Mandy Moore in Dedication, and Steve Carell in Dan in Real Life.
"Weeds" definitely started again this week. If you can't seem to get enough of those wacky Agrestic folks, check out the videos of their morning show, "Good Morning Agrestic."

Honoring Elvis: Three "Suspicious Minds" Covers

Today marks the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, and it seems wrong not to honor The King with a musical interlude. I got a little depressed browsing the photos of late-model Elvis - man, did he look rough in the end - so I'm cheering myself up with one of my favorite Elvis songs, "Suspicious Minds," which is widely credited with fueling his 1968 comeback.

The high-energy anthem has been covered an astounding number of times in myriad different ways. As a kid, I loved the Fine Young Cannibals version (hey, I'm not ashamed; my parents had the CD), so I thought I'd share it. David Bowie turns 60 today, officially making him one of the smoothest sexagenarians on the planet. Sure, he's looking a bit rough around the edges, but in his poise, style, and performance, he's a great example of how rock stars can grow old gracefully.

To celebrate, I've dug up this contemplative and self-reflective track from Bowie's 1980 album, Scary Monsters. (Fun fact: Bowie shares a birthday with Elvis, so you should also feel free to celebrate with an Elvis classic.)

Jason Lee - Love Him or Leave Him?

Jason Lee has been keeping a low profile since My Name Is Earl went off the air, but he's about to make a return to TV in the upcoming TNT series Delta Blues, which is executive produced by George Clooney. Lee is set to play Dwight Hendricks, a police officer by day, Elvis impersonator by night.

I loved Lee in pretty much every Kevin Smith movie - from Brodie in Mallrats to Banky in Chasing Amy - but I could never warm up to Earl (or that absurd mustache). This role sounds like it could be be great for him though, the perfect combination of serious and wacky. How do you feel about Jason Lee?
