Ellen DeGeneres to Join American Idol as the Fourth Judge!

Those of you holding out for Paula Abdul to return to American Idol this season can stop holding your breath: Ellen DeGeneres is taking Paula's spot as the fourth judge!

Fox confirmed the news this afternoon in a press release, with Ellen saying:

I’m thrilled to be the new judge on American Idol. I’ve watched since the beginning, and I’ve always been a huge fan. So getting this job is a dream come true, and think of all the money I’ll save from not having to text in my vote.

Ellen tweeted her excitement, and I'm excited, too, as this solves the mystery of who will be the fourth judge since Paula confirmed she was leaving Idol early last month over contract negotiations.

Ellen had a memorable run as a guest on this past season of So You Think You Can Dance, so I'm looking forward to her as a judge. (It's rumored to be a five-year deal.)

Ellen, Tyra, Rachael Ray Top Daytime Emmy Awards

Ellen DeGeneres, Rachael Ray, and Jeanne Cooper were among the big winners at the Daytime Emmy Awards on Friday night. DeGeneres took home the award for Outstanding Talk Show Host for the fourth year in a row - but her show, which had won the Outstanding Talk Show prize in each of the last four years, was upset by Rachael Ray in that category.

Meanwhile, Cooper won her first Emmy at age 79 for playing Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless. Cooper, who made her first appearance on the show 35 years ago, had been nominated eight previous times without a win.

Other winners were The Tyra Banks Show and Regis Philbin, who took home a lifetime achievement award. Billboard reports that the Dave Matthews Band and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers will headline the first Mile High Music Festival in July in Commerce City, Colorado.

Family Guy Without Its Creator, and More Strike News

It's day 10 of the Hollywood writers' strike, and people - from Family Guy's creator to blogging writers from Late Show with David Letterman's staff - are starting to get punchy. Here are some of the recent developments:

Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane is not pleased that Fox is planning to complete written episodes of the show without his input, calling it "a colossal d*ck move" by the network. He admits, though, that Fox is within its legal rights to do so.
There's a report that Letterman will pay his staff out of his own pocket through the end of the year.
Ellen DeGeneres, who's been under fire for crossing picket lines, has canceled plans to tape her show in New York next week.
What we'll be watching if the strike continues: a whole lot of game shows and a Supernanny spinoff called Supermanny.
There's a small (so far) movement to send unsharpened pencils to the networks.
This new blog tracks strike-related job losses.
The studio executives have said they don't know how much money there is to be made online, but this video currently making the rounds would, um, strongly suggest otherwise.

"Private Practice": A Sure Thing? Just Ask Ellen

That Ellen sure does get things done. While taping an interview with Kate Walsh for an upcoming show this afternoon, Ellen DeGeneres decided the "Grey's Anatomy" star shouldn't have to wait until ABC announces its fall schedule on Tuesday to learn whether her spinoff, "Private Practice," is getting picked up as a series. She phoned up ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson and asked for an answer on the spot. The episode will air Thursday, but if you can't wait to see what he said, read more

Ellen to Host "Idol Gives Back"

Seacrest, you've been silenced! Super-hostess Ellen DeGeneres will lend her talents to "Idol Gives Back," this week's special "American Idol" charity episode. Granted, it seems like a bit of an odd step for her after the Oscars - what's next? Puppy Bowl IV? - but I'm always glad to see her lend her humor to a good cause.

And "Idol Gives Back" is certainly a good cause, raising awareness and money for Charity Projects Entertainment Fund, which provides support for at-risk children around the world, especially in the United States and Africa. Numerous corporate sponsors have stepped up to donate for the event, and after all the weeks of build-up, I'm excited to see what "Idol Gives Back" will hold. Fox released more details about how the shows will work today, and here are some of the highlights:

On Tuesday's performance show, the top six will sing what Fox is calling "life anthem songs." I admit I don't really know what songs qualify as life anthems - "Lean on Me"? "That's What Friends are For?" - but I'm glad the performances will tie into the feel-good theme.
For every vote cast, the corporate sponsors - including News Corp., Ford, Coca Cola and AT&T - will donate money to CPEF.

Wednesday's two-hour results show, hosted by Ellen, will be the star-studded event we've been hearing about, with appearances by Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Earth, Wind & Fire, Il Divo, Keira Knightley, Hugh Grant, Josh Groban with the African Children’s Choir, Jack Black, Helen Mirren, Rascal Flatts, Quincy Jones, Carrie Underwood, Annie Lennox and others. There's also the improbable duet Seacrest promised last week.
During the results show, viewers will be able to make their own donations, and all proceeds from the Ford music video and other downloads from the show will go to CPEF.

After all that, it seems a shame that someone will get kicked off at the end of the night. Maybe they could pull an "Amazing Race"-style stunt and have a special non-elimination round?

The final Harry Potter book will be 784 pages, but the paper "will contain at least 30% post-consumer waste fiber," says the AP.
Indie label Sub Pop launches its first-ever "Loser Scholarship," reports Pitchfork.
