Katie Holmes was back in her baggy jeans going to work on the set of Eli Stone in LA yesterday. After a busy weekend with her adorable family, Katie looked rejuvenated, refreshed, and ready to get down to business singing and dancing. In an alternate universe, it might be Katie off around the world premiering record-breaking The Dark Knight for her role as Rachel Dawes, but frankly she looks perfectly happy on her new project right at home close to Tom and little Suri.

Katie's Weekend of Fun, Family and Filming

Katie Holmes wrapped up her week of work on Eli Stone Friday as she filmed scenes in a LA park with her co-star Jonny Lee Miller. We heard from Jonny a few days ago when he spoke at the Summer TCAs about his very special guest star. Once her shooting wrapped, Katie was right back to spending quality time with her family over the weekend. She took Suri - who sported what's apparently the most popular dress for celebrity babies - on a shopping trip to The Grove. Katie spent Sunday by Tom's side as they watched a car race in their coordinated leather jackets. We can't wait to see Katie back on TV, but it's always a treat to see her looking so happy with the people she loves most.

Katie Holmes Dodges an On-Set Accident

Katie Holmes narrowly avoided a (probably on purpose) catastrophe yesterday on the set of Eli Stone as she managed not to spill her soda on the head of a nearby costar. The show's cast and crew were at LA's Dodger Stadium to film scenes, and luckily Katie was able to ditch Wednesday's big hair and heavy makeup in favor of a more ballpark-friendly getup. No signs of Suri this time, but after her long week of work, Katie must be thrilled about spending the weekend at home with her family.

Katie Holmes Shows Off Her Small-Screen Style

After a long day of work on Eli Stone, Katie Holmes stayed in her hair and makeup heading out to dinner with Tom. As usual, Katie showed off the latest trends with her gladiator shoes and baggy jeans. However, we're not so sure about the peg-rolled jeans or socks with those shoes. While Katie was preparing for her singing and dancing role, the rest of the cast was busy chatting with the press over at the Summer TCAs, and it sounds like they're all as excited for her cameo as we all are.

Adorable Suri wasn't there to accompany her this time around, but clearly her appearance on the show is enough to put a spring in her step. Most of you agree that Katie is best suited to the small screen, so perhaps this cameo could open a door for another show Katie can call her own.

Pilot Watch: Eli Stone

With several new series set to premiere this Winter, I'm resurrecting my occasional pilot watch feature to share my first impressions of the upcoming shows. Up today: Eli Stone, which premieres after Lost this Thursday.

What's it about? A ruthless San Francisco attorney starts seeing visions of George Michael and learns that he's either 1) a prophet, or 2) dying of a brain aneurysm.

Who's in it? Jonny Lee Miller, Victor Garber, Loretta Devine, Natasha Henstride

The good: Eli Stone is the comfort food version of TV: easy to watch, not too challenging, and ultimately satisfying. The show's executive producer - Greg Berlanti of Brothers & Sisters and Dirty Sexy Money - knows how to make good television, and it shows in the way the first episode of Eli balances its weighty moments, comedy, and bizarre musical fantasies. Jonny Lee Miller, cleaned up since his Trainspotting days, is a total charmer as the conflicted main character having to face both his own mortality and the fact that he might need to do something besides screw the little guy out of millions.

The bad: Eli is pretty quirky - though not Pushing Daisies or even Ally McBeal quirky - and it won't be everyone's cup of tea. The show has the potential to get cheesy fast, though at least for now, the way it acknowledges its own cheesiness (part of the pilot revolves around Eli's stereotypical visits to a Chinese acupuncturist who later turns out not to be Chinese at all) is part of the fun. It's also a weird show to pair with Lost, though that isn't the show's fault.

Will I watch? Definitely. It's purely enjoyable: the TV equivalent of a nice, heaping plate of mashed potatoes or a hot grilled cheese on a cold night, which is just what I need in the midst of the writers' strike.
