The release of Pixar's Up has really put me in an animated mood. Ha! Get it? So I gathered up some of the upcoming animated movies (a few as far out as 2012) from Pixar, Disney, DreamWorks - and Tim Burton. There are some exciting movies on their way to the silver screen so get ready to mark your calendars!

Bee Movie: Seinfeld Flies Successfully Into a New Genre

In the B-movie world, movie titles and posters often come before the scripts. Similarly, with Bee Movie, creator Jerry Seinfeld first came up with the "bee movie" pun came and then wrote a film to fit the title. Those humble beginnings had me a bit worried before going into this movie; as a huge Seinfeld fan, I really wanted to see the comedian succeed.

Bee Movie gets off to a rather pedestrian start, with humor dominated by lazy puns that, admittedly, are more kid-friendly than what follows. The story follows Barry B. Benson (Seinfeld) upon graduating from college in a New York hive. Unlike his buttoned-down buddy Adam (Matthew Broderick), Barry is distraught at the prospect of doing the same job every day for the rest of his existence. After sullenly lounging around his family's pool - in a scene that heavily references The Graduate - Barry decides to join the "pollen jocks" on their next trip out of the hive. From there, the movie starts to gain laughs and momentum, so

Barry befriends a florist named Vanessa Bloome (Renee Zellweger), who is dating, against her better judgment but to our entertainment, an obnoxious jock voiced by Patrick Warburton (Seinfeld's Puddy). Barry breaks bee rule No. 1 and speaks to a human, and soon, he's smitten with Vanessa and the outside world.

The plot picks up when Barry learns that humans are "stealing" bee honey and selling it in supermarkets, leading to a dramatic, action-packed story that pokes fun at corporate litigation and champions the importance of the environment.

The movie has the same saccharine look as other Dreamworks projects, but thankfully, Bee Movie forgoes the usual fart jokes in favor of classic Seinfeld delivery, surprising cameos, and witty pop-culture references. When Barry survives being swatted with a pamphlet, he mourns: "I lost a cousin to Italian Vogue once."

As a fan of Seinfeld's comedy, I found this movie far funnier than most animated features. My main gripe is that I'm not sure how entertaining it would be for kids. At my screening, the big laughs were undoubtedly adult guffaws, and I heard one boy, who looked to be about 10, say afterwards that he found it boring. Unfortunately, I can't offer an opinion from the kid perspective, but as an adult, I'm glad to see Seinfeld succeeding in a new medium.

Ben Stiller Getting More Animation Action

I'm a bit frightened to see Ben Stiller's name associated with a superhero parody ever since Mystery Men, which - despite a promising cast that included Janeane Garofalo and Greg Kinnear - was pretty much unwatchable.

But Stiller seems to have recovered from the trauma: His Red Hour Films is producing a "superhero sendup" called Master Mind, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Stiller is working on the kid-friendly feature for DreamWorks Animation, on the heels of his starring roles in Night at the Museum and DreamWorks' Madagascar. Here's more from the HR story:

DreamWorks Animation veterans Cameron Hood and Kyle Jefferson are attached to make their feature film directorial debut with "Master Mind," a satirical take on the superhero genre centering on a supervillain who loses his joie de vivre after accidentally killing his archrival, Uberman, in the opening scene of the movie.

Is it just me, or does the premise sound like it has a bit of Zoolander thrown in, too? Bad Mystery Men flashbacks aside, I can see Stiller's comedy working really well in a kids' movie context. As for when the movie will see the light of day, Stiller joked to the Hollywood Reporter, "They have put the film on the fast track, which in animation terms means it will be coming out in the next 15-20 years."

Isla Fisher Has an Animated Conversation With Alec Baldwin and Chris Pine in Cannes

Dreamworks' next animated project, Rise of the Guardians, hits theaters this holiday season, but the film's starring voices Isla Fisher, Alec Baldwin, and Chris Pine were happy to talk about the film during a Q&A session with press in Cannes today. The trio are just a few of the stars in the ensemble cast, along with Hugh Jackman and Jude Law. The movie chronicles the so-called guardians - Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and more - in their fight to save the children of the world from an evil spirit, voiced by Jude. Guardians will likely be a project Isla can share with her daughters, Olive and Elula.

Alec is in France with fiancée Hilaria Thomas, and he's actually doing double-duty. In addition to press for Guardians, Alec is filming the documentary Seduced and Abandoned. He and writer-director James Toback are capturing the process involved in raising funds and selling an idea at Cannes. It seems Alec's turning his attention to film with news that 30 Rock will air its final episode next Fall in an abbreviated 13-episode season.

Kate Gives Baby Bing a Big Kiss as They Catch a Flight

Kate Hudson had her son Bing Bellamy in her arms at LAX yesterday as they made their way through security. The actress wrapped her baby in her sweater and gave him a sweet kiss as they waited in line. Kate is currently engaged to Bing's father, Matthew Bellamy of the band Muse. There were a rash of rumors that the duo had already tied the knot last month after Kate's mom Goldie Hawn said in an interview that her daughter had "married an English rock star." However, Goldie was quick to clarify that Kate and Matthew were not yet officially husband and wife. Kate has been enjoying some downtime with her family lately, but she also has three movies slated to hit theaters in 2013, including the animated Dreamworks film Me and My Shadow. The project should give Kate the chance to explore her comedic side, as it also features the voices of SNL castmember Bill Hader and funny guy Josh Gadd from Broadway show The Book of Mormon.

Blake Lively Heads to Brooklyn For a Wintery Gossip Girl Afternoon

Blake Lively braved the rain and cold in NYC yesterday to shoot an outdoor scene for Gossip Girl. She bundled up in a down coat between takes and caught up with costar Kelly Rutherford at Brooklyn's Borough Hall. It was the latest day before the cameras for Blake, who's been working on her small-screen series all week. Her downtime, though, has been spent with boyfriend Ryan Reynolds. Ryan was pictured leaving Blake's NYC home a few days ago, enjoying time in the Big Apple before he has to start doing press for his animated March 22 release of The Croods. He's got further voice work lined up, too. Ryan will provide vocals for DreamWorks Animation's Turbo along with Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Giamatti, and Snoop Dogg.

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy Take Their Boys on a Weekend Away

Kate Hudson and Matt Bellamy spent the weekend with their sons Ryder and Bingham near LA. The foursome packed up and headed back to their home in the city yesterday. It was their latest fun getaway after a recent stint in Cabo, where Kate Hudson broke out her bikini. The breaks came as Kate gears up for a return to moviemaking with two new projects. She'll lend her voice to the animated Dreamworks picture Me & My Shadow, along with Bill Hader and Book of Mormon's Josh Gad. Kate's also making a transition to action star. She'll star in Everly, a thriller about a woman who has to fend off assassins after breaking up with her mob boss boyfriend. It should be an interesting film, since the whole plot takes place in just one room.
