Love It or Leave It: Dove's Fresh Takes, Starring Alicia Keys

I often like and admire Dove's campaigns, with their body-affirming messages and "love yourself" themes. I also fully support most anything that features women helping out other women, encouraging us to be good to each other rather than cut each other down.

Thus, theoretically, I'm all for the Fresh Takes micro-series that Dove is doing in collaboration with MTV. Airing both online and during episodes of The Hills, the Fresh Takes series follows three 20-something BFFs (one of whom is played by Alicia Keys) who try to soothe each others' insecurities about dating and body image, among other things. But while I'm kind of loving Jessalyn Wanlim as the energetic Lizzie, these episodes (microsodes?) just feel stilted and trite to me.

Jessica Biel Reveals the Secret to Perfect Brows, a Hot Tip About Dove Soap, and Her Top Revlon Picks

Revlon spokeswoman Jessica Biel has teamed up with the beauty brand in a campaign promoting Grow Luscious Plumping eye makeup. The mascaras and eyeliners will, in Jessica's words, "lengthen and strengthen [lashes] with your natural grow cycle." And at a recent event promoting the line, Jessica shared some of her best beauty tips, along with which Revlon products she counts as her favorites. Jessica said:

On giving thought to antiaging products at the age of 29: "I’ve definitely started to think about it. . . I'm a bit of a 'fraidy cat when it comes to anything really aggressive. So at this point I'm pretty much [doing] sunscreen, hats, and moisturizing. I haven't tapped into too many antiaging products. But it's definitely on my mind."
On the best beauty advice she's ever received: "One piece of advice was from my friend's beautiful French mother, who literally only ever washed her face with Dove soap and water and she has the most beautiful skin. And I'm looking at her going, 'Have I been messing this up my whole life. . . buying all these beautiful products and I just needed Dove soap - what?!' So I've heard that bit of beauty advice, and then of course - sleep, water, hydrate!"
On great tips she's picked up from the pros: "A gray color works for anybody's eyebrows. And it doesn't turn your eyebrows orange. . . I was tipped off by a makeup artist that gray works for blondes, for brunettes, for redheads."

The recent market twisters may have you scrambling for shelter for your portfolio. According to online brokerage Betterment.com, during the market mayhem of early August, investors under age 35 were one-third more likely than older investors to move from stocks to bonds.

During the week of August 8, the first trading days following the downgrade of U.S. debt by rating agency Standard & Poor’s, the Dow Jones industrial average nauseated all onlookers - diving as much as 635 points, or 5.6%, on Monday, only to climb by as much as 430 points, or 4.0%, the next day.

But none of this is reason to panic - especially for young investors like us.

Our youth not only affords us fewer wrinkles and faster metabolisms, it also allows us a higher risk tolerance for investments. “When you’re young, if there’s a major market setback, you still have time to hit your wealth targets,” says Dr. Walt Woerheide, PhD, CFP, ChFC, professor of investments at The American College, a non-profit school for financial services professionals.

Also, we’ll need stocks’ potential rate of return to try to beat inflation over the long term, says Kimberly Foss, a financial planner and founder of Empyrion Wealth Management, in Roseville, Cal. She likens the situation to trying to go up a down escalator: “If you just go on, you’ll go backward; if you walk up at a mild pace, you’re not going to make your goal,” she says. “You need [stocks’] rapid pace, which is higher than inflation, to make your goal.”

What should I be doing with my portfolio now?

The short answer: not much. As shown by the aforementioned day-to-day Dow movements, knee-jerk reactions to current events are generally futile - and often counterproductive for your portfolio. Young investors who traded stocks for bonds as the market dove lost out when it bounced right back. Your best bet is always to stick with your long-term investing plan.
