Donald Sutherland Shares His Hunger Games Excitement and Talks President Snow's Added Scenes

Donald Sutherland's enthusiasm for The Hunger Games was contagious when we spoke with him at a recent junket for the movie in Beverly Hills. The veteran actor was so engrossed in the book and his character, President Coriolanus Snow, that he and director Gary Ross actually created two new scenes featuring The Capitol's ruler. He also talked about the emotional impact he knows the final scene between Katniss and Rue will have on audiences and why he thinks the book and film can be a call to action for young people. The Eagle: A Battle to Stay Awake

Channing Tatum's Roman Empire drama The Eagle emerges beneath the shadow of many other battle epics before it. It begs the question: Can Tatum and his film possibly stack up against benchmarks like Russell Crowe's Gladiator? The movie capitalizes on the opportunity to attract a younger audience with Tatum and his costar Jamie Bell (all grown up since his Billy Elliott days), and with their requisite physiques and boyish exuberance, they intrepidly wield the swords and shields of the time.

Tatum stars as Marcus Aquila, an officer of the Roman army with a lot to prove. His father, an officer before him, had led his soldiers (the ninth legion) into battle in Northern England, never to be seen again. Lost with them was a golden emblem of an eagle, representing the legion and Rome's honor. The mystery surrounding the disappearance of the army unit haunts Marcus for multiple reasons: he grieves the loss of his father and bears the disgrace of his family's name. He's convinced that if he can search out and find the eagle, and figure out what happened to the lost legion, he'll restore his father's honor. It's a plot that may play out well in the novel the film is based on, The Eagle of the Ninth, but Marcus's personal quest isn't compelling on the big screen. Due to the danger of the journey - the destination, Caledonia, was a deadly place for a Roman soldier in those times - Marcus brings just one companion, his slave Esca (Bell). Esca hails from the territory Marcus is about to infiltrate, and hates his master based on the Roman/Briton rivalry. However, once the men take on the perils of the expedition together and must resort to teamwork to survive an encounter with the savage "seal people," they forge a deep bond. It's a predictable development, but it's ultimately the movie's sole source of entertainment.

The plot progression to this friendship is mind-numbingly boring; the film rolls along at a snail's pace, punctuated occasionally by battle scenes that are remarkably unexciting. Which brings me to the film's other major problem: the dialogue. The script is dumbed down so much that even though the story is easy to follow, you can't help but feel insulted. Beyond that, some lines are so cheesy my jaw dropped, including a closing exchange between the two main characters that feels lifted from an '80s buddy comedy.

The Eagle tries hard to be an epic film, but the only thing epic about it is how dull it is.

He may be posing as a high school student for his next role, but Channing Tatum is going back further than that in this trailer for The Eagle, set in the second century AD. Tatum plays a Roman soldier named Marcus Aquila who embarks on a daunting journey to clear his father's name. He must uncover what happened to his father's legion of soldiers, known as the Eagle of the Ninth (which is both the title of the book the film was adapted from and the original title of the movie), after they have gone missing during wartime in Northern Britain.

Marcus Aquila is accompanied by his slave, Esca (Jamie Bell), and though the two men have an adversarial relationship at first, it looks like they become allies in their quest. However you feel about Tatum, this movie looks appealing for those who appreciate armor-clad battle epics, and it's directed by Kevin McDonald, who was behind The Last King of Scotland and State of Play.

First Look: Dirty Sexy Money's Second Season

The last episode of ABC's Dirty Sexy Money aired so long ago, it had a Nutcracker theme. The show - like its counterparts in ABC's Wednesday night lineup, Pushing Daisies and Private Practice - went off the air during the writers' strike and never returned. This week, Dirty Sexy Money is back, amid a bunch of promises from the producers that this year's show will be "dirtier," "sexier," and - you got it - "monier."

Along those lines, they've added Lucy Liu to the cast as Nola Lyons, a "whip-smart, overachieving, and very fashionable" attorney who goes up against Peter Krause's Nick George. Nick, meanwhile, will find himself more affected by the over-the-top wealth and naughty antics of the Darlings, even as he tries to stay on the sidelines.

The show's gone through a lot of turmoil since its premiere (several executive producers, episodes that were reshot or ditched altogether), but I'm hoping Dirty Sexy Money can pull it together for season two. Matthew McConaughey Is Already Thinking For Two

Kate Hudson ditched her blue dress for a more comfortable pantsuit after the premiere of Fool's Gold in LA last night, but kept on her pretty and dramatic eye makeup for the party. She and Matthew were showing off that friendly flirtation we love so much, but he was more into opening up about how much he's enjoying his relationship with Camila and their little baby already. He said,

"I am a happy man, thank you. Already, even with Camila just being pregnant now, the parenthood is begun. There is already a slight shift in the thoughts, the way I think about the future, and it has more of a 'we' to it instead of just a 'me.' That feels good, it's fine, and it hasn't really changed my point of view. It's just encompassed a little more quality."

In fact, MM says he is so happy with his current situation that he and Camila have no plans for marriage right now. Guess Matthew's mom has her work cut out for her.

Kate and Matt Fool LA With Their Gold Premiere

While Fool's Gold looks a little iffy, there's no question how much we love the movie's two leads, Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, who were both out in LA last night for the premiere. Kate was apparently too chilly (and frilly) to lose the coat while MM had Camila, who doesn't look to be showing much yet, on his arm. We heard a little of Kate gush about Matt becoming a dad, and MM's pretty excited himself for his new little buddy. He said, "Make no doubt about it. My kid will dance. He will be on the beach and he will be taking hikes with a wild bandana on." No surprises there. I love his little outdoors baby already. Fun fact about Miss Alves, she's not just a model, but she and her mom also apparently design (cough::heinous::cough) bags! Here's to hoping that even if this film is no How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days (maybe it's great!) cute cute Kate and Matty will be making movies together for years to come.

TV Tonight: Dirty Sexy Money

I haven't been writing much about it, but Dirty Sexy Money has been working its way up to a place on my must-watch list. The presence of Peter Krause as idealistic attorney Nick George helps, but he's not the only good thing about the show. In fact, I'm most drawn to the wealthy, dysfunctional Darling clan Nick works for, from secretive patriarch Tripp Darling (Donald Sutherland) to his spoiled starlet daughter Juliet (Samaire Armstrong).

So far, I've enjoyed the over-the-top soapy elements of the show (a photo shoot with lions! a catfight over bangs!) more than the overarching story of Nick's quest to find out who killed his father, who had been the Darlings' lawyer before his death. But I have a feeling the two are going to collide quite nicely in tonight's episode, when Nick and his wife head to Italy to look for clues and end up running into Karen Darling, who never quite knows when to keep her mouth shut. Meanwhile, Letitia finally admits to Tripp that she had a long-running affair with Nick's father - a little secret Nick accidentally spoiled in last week's episode. So much drama! Pilot Watch: "Dirty Sexy Money"

The networks have announced their fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? Throughout the summer, as I watch the pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. Note that a lot can change before a show actually makes it to air, so these aren't comprehensive reviews, just quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: ABC's "Dirty Sexy Money."

What's it about? A lawyer takes over his dead father's job as the personal counsel to a rich, crazy New York family, getting sucked into a world he spent his childhood resenting.

Who's in it? Peter Krause of "Six Feet Under," Donald Sutherland, William Baldwin, Jill Clayburgh, Natalie Zea

The good: Considering the size of the cast, this pilot does an amazing job setting up the dark, decadent world of the Darlings without feeling heavy-handed. Where other pilots rely on expositionary dialogue ("but you're the best-selling author in history!"), "Dirty Sexy Money" has mastered the art of showing and not telling - one of my favorite touches was how the character of each Darling is revealed through a ring tone on Nick's cell phone.

The bad: This pilot does a great job of setting up the world of Nick and the Darlings, but it doesn't give me a great sense of how the show will be structured from week to week. I worry that the wacky Darlings, so amusingly quirky in the pilot, will be tiresome by a few weeks in.

Will I watch? Definitely. Krause alone was enough to get me to give the show a chance, but all the curveballs his character gets thrown in the second half of this pilot will keep me watching.

The Hunger Games: A Satisfying Adaptation and a Stunning Movie

If you've been holding your breath about The Hunger Games, it's time to let it out, because the movie fulfills any and all hopes you could have. Not only is the adaptation loyal to its cherished source material, as a film, it's simply incredible.

Based on Suzanne Collins's novel, The Hunger Games portrays a dystopian future in which what's presumed to be North America has been broken up into 12 districts surrounding an ultra-rich, powerful Capitol. To remind the districts of their subordination, the Capitol holds an annual event in which one teen girl and boy (known as tributes) from each district are forced to fight to the death (until only one remains) as a televised show. At the center of all this is Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a 16-year-old from one of the poorest districts, who volunteers to participate in the place of her younger sister, Prim. The movie follows Katniss from her hardscrabble life at home with her family and best friend Gale (Liam Hemsworth) to the flamboyant excess of the Capitol and into the action-packed arena as she does everything she can to survive. The story is already well-known to legions of readers, and director Gary Ross brings Collins's novel to life as a visual treat, with an emotional punch as strong as the film's heroine.
