FlashForward Series Premiere Breakdown

So, did you guys catch FlashForward this week? Even though I had already seen the pilot (OK, I saw it twice), I still tuned in to refresh my memory. No surprises here - I caught a few nuances that I had missed the first time around, and I can already tell that this may be the kind of show that requires a second viewing. (This should be a familiar routine for all you Lost fans out there). Speaking of Lost, did anyone else notice the billboard for Oceanic airlines?

Even if you paid attention, it can be a bit confusing to keep track of who's who in new pilots, so I've broken it all down for you. Check it out and then let's discuss what you thought of the episode! To see what I thought, just read more.

Mark Benford: Played by Joseph Fiennes, Mark is an FBI agent, loving husband and father, and alcoholic. He's immediately obsessed with getting to the bottom of what caused the flashforwards after viewing his own. He sees himself agonizing over the case and drinking from a flask. Mark knows that if he falls off the wagon, his wife Olivia will leave him, so it's not surprising that he's determined to do whatever he can to prevent his vision from becoming a reality. Biggest question for Mark: can he stop his flashforward from happening?

Olivia Benford: Played by Lost's Sonya Walger, Olivia is Mark's wife. She's a doctor with a cheeky sense of humor (which includes sending her husband faux insults via text and post-it). Olivia's flashforward is one of the more upsetting of the bunch: she sees herself with a man named Lloyd Simcoe. Later in the episode we learn that Lloyd is the father of one of Olivia's patients who is admitted to the hospital after the blackout. Biggest question for Olivia: does Mark drive her away, or does she become an unfaithful wife?

Bryce Varley: One of Olivia's fellow doctors, Bryce is contemplating suicide when the blackout occurs. After seeing his vision, he has a brand new outlook on life and heads back to the hospital rejuvenated. He considers his vision to be a gift from God. Biggest question for Bryce: is simply believing in happiness the only push he needed?

Nicole Kirby: First of all, I can't believe it took me three viewings to realize that Nicole is none other than Jane Sterling on Mad Men! (Seeing those actors out of their '60s garb can be really jarring.) Anyway, we don't know much about Nicole yet, just that she's a babysitter who was caught lying down on the job (get it?! Heh). Unlike Bryce, Nicole thinks the flashforwards aren't a gift from God, but a punishment. Biggest question for Nicole: what has she done that warrants a punishment?

Aaron Stark: Aaron's an electrician by trade, but he's also got a very important job as Mark's AA sponsor and friend. After two years, he's still grieving for his daughter Tracy, who died in the war in Afghanistan. Mark's flashforward is one of the most hopeful: he sees a reunion with his daughter, who is actually alive and well. Biggest question for Aaron: could his daughter really be alive?

Demetri Noh: Played by John Cho, Demetri is Mark's FBI partner. He's still relatively new to the job and seems more preoccupied with what song he'll be dancing to at his upcoming wedding. Demetri's vision is perhaps the most mysterious of all: he sees nothing. Biggest question for Demetri: is he going to be dead in six months?

Other general questions: How did Lloyd Simcoe's son know Olivia's name? What is up with that kangaroo? Was the blackout caused by a natural disaster, or is someone behind it all? What role will Dominic Monaghan play in all this? Who was that guy at the end and why is he walking around in Detroit? We've only scratched the surface, and now I'm dying to hear how you all felt about the series premiere!

2009 Comic-Con: Joseph Fiennes, Dominic Monaghan and ABC's Flash Forward

I have to say, ABC's upcoming Fall show Flash Forward looks really compelling. From the few scenes I got to watch and the discussion at today's Comic-Con panel, I'm pretty much sold on this show already. And it's not just because Joseph Fiennes is very handsome, nor is it because Dominic Monaghan is on the show and made an appearance (which he did!). Really, it's not.

The series begins on an average day that soon turns unusual when everyone in the world blacks out at the same time. During this time, of course, initial damage is done (people driving while they black out get into accidents, etc.) and everyone "flashes forward" in his/her mind, seeing images of what life is like six months in the future. Then the action resumes in "present day" and the season progresses episode by episode until we "catch up" with the future that everyone has glimpsed. Thus, the question becomes: If you know what happens in the future, would you (and could you) try to change it?

Because it's ABC and it's a mysterious show that is even titled Flash Forward, many have called it a companion series to Lost, though the show is actually based on a novel by Robert Sawyer. Appropriately, though, the panel today was moderated by Entertainment Weekly's resident Lost guy, Jeff "Doc" Jensen. Panelists included the show creator David Goyer (writer of Batman Begins), a couple of producers, and actors Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance, Christine Woods and, briefly, Dominic Monaghan. To check out some of my initial thoughts on Flash Forward, read more.

We were shown the first several scenes of the pilot episode and right away this show grabs you and yanks you in. We see images of destruction (car accidents, injured people, etc.) and then they rewind four hours and we see what each of the main characters was doing just before the blackout.
Joseph Fiennes is (yup, I'm gonna say it) so fine. He just is. I am so looking forward to seeing him on my TV each week.
John Cho, while very cute as well, is somewhat hard to buy during scenes in which he's supposed to be a tough guy. But I'll still be pleased to see him on my TV each week as well.
Also coming to our TVs: Dominic Monaghan, the beloved Charlie from Lost. He wasn't in the first preview we saw but he showed up in a clip that was shown at the very end of the panel, at which point the screaming in the hall drowned out his one line. Then he came onstage but didn't have much time to talk before we were ushered out. All we learned was that his character is named Simon and, according to David Goyer, his character is a "game changer" who "f***s up a lot of things."
In addition to the actors here at Comic-Con, Lost's Sonya Walger (Penny!) also plays a major role as Joseph Fiennes' character's wife. She even filmed a brief video explaining that she's not at Comic-Con right now because she's getting married this weekend, and besides, she doesn't like to be around all the weirdos in costumes. At the very end, though, she takes off her bathrobe to reveal a Wonder Woman costume and asks someone where her "f***ing tiara" is. It's pretty amusing.
I do think this show will appeal to many Lost fans for a few reasons (and I think it appealed to ABC for the same reasons). It's a mysterious show that's grounded in human drama. The creators and writers actually do know where they're going with the story, which is something that I think fans find comforting. There won't be any nonsense or randomness to the writing, and producer Marc Guggenheim even assured us that "we'll never see a flash forward that doesn't happen." And at the same time, it sounds as though they're trying to avoid predictability. Goyer explained, "Part of doing the show is subverting expectations . . . there are a lot of game-changing things that happen," especially in the seventh episode.
Having said all that, nobody wants to call it "The New Lost." Goyer: "Nothing is ever going to be 'The New Lost'. . . . Lost was a genre-breaking show and [we figured that] if ABC was courageous enough to put that on the air, they might be courageous enough to put this on."

So far, I'm glad ABC has taken a chance with this one. Time will tell, though. Flash Forward premieres Sept. 24.

Where Will Lost's Charlie Turn Up Next?

Lost's Charlie may be dead, but it sounds like Dominic Monaghan is staying close to the ABC family. The actor recently turned up in one of the network's new "ABC House" promos, playing foosball with the likes of Courteney Cox and Patrick Dempsey, and when Dempsey challenges him by saying, "You're so dead," Monaghan cheekily replies, "Actually, I was."

What's the deal? Well, it sounds like Monaghan is coming back not to Lost but to another ABC show. And while the specific show hasn't been confirmed yet, all signs - and one news report - point to Flash Forward, the post-apocalyptic drama that got some early advertising during a Lost episode this Spring.

ABC and Monaghan's people are keeping quiet for now, but the show was my first bet - and not just because Cox says the Flash Forward tagline ("What did you see?") to Monaghan in the ABC promo. And if it's true, he'll be in familiar company, as Sonya Walger - Lost's Penny - is on the show as well.

Of course, maybe we're all being faked out and Monaghan will actually play another secret member of the Walker family on Brothers and Sisters. But assuming it's Flash Forward, does that seem like a good fit? You can check out the ABC promo in question if you read more.

Chuck Rundown: Episode 12, "Chuck Vs. The Third Dimension"

Hope you got the special specs out last night because the 3-D episode of Chuck was actually pretty impressive. Granted, I was watching in HD and with the proper yellow-and-blue eyewear, but I was legitimately wowed by the special effects: Chuck's flashes seemed particularly well-suited for the technology. But even without the extra dimensions, the episode still worked on the regular ol' funny-spy-stuff level. Ready to chat? Just read more.

I'm actually glad we had a break between the emotional Christmas episode and this 3-D extravaganza, because the two were so different in tone that it might have felt like whiplash otherwise. This episode takes a step back from all the Fulcrum mysteries; it's just a good, old-fashioned mission, with some funny Buy More antics thrown in.

But the episode doesn't completely back away from what happened at Christmas. Chuck's still thrown by seeing Sarah shoot someone in cold blood. It's even coming up in his nightmares (though whether 3-D Yvonne Strahovski greeting you in bed is a nightmare for any guy can probably be debated). For much of the episode, Chuck's confusion manifests itself as burnout: He'd give anything for a night off, but instead, he's dangling from elevators and dodging death. Finally, though, he tells Sarah what's really bothering him. And naturally, he gets his night off, but as soon as he hears that Sarah and Casey are off on a mission, he's back in the car, ready to go. (Love how much that also ruined Casey's idea of a good time, namely a case without Bartowski.)

Meanwhile, Dominic Monaghan cracked me up as Tyler Martin, who's such a squirrely party boy that he ends up on the business end of Casey's tranquilizer gun more than once. Of course he was going to escape when left alone with Chuck; what I didn't expect is that he'd show Chuck a good time courtesy of some tequila shots. (Also, Chuck's British accent wasn't too bad!) In short order, they're whisked up to a hotel room by some dangerous women, who strip Chuck to his boxers and throw knives at him. He ends up riding to (relative) safety on a plate-glass outdoor elevator, but not before interrupting the romantic fumblings of the same couple from the John Larroquette episode. Ha! I also liked the way Chuck convinces Tyler to take the stage and then saves the day with some well-timed crowd surfing.

It might have been even funnier if some of Chuck's Buy More colleagues had showed up at the concert, since they managed to plow through all of Tyler's CDs to get a coveted golden ticket. The Butterman plotline had me chuckling all night, especially with all the "Final Countdown" music cues and 3-D sandwich-gobbling. (Also, shout-out to Jerome Bettis; between him and Michael Strahan, Chuck has become the prime acting vehicle for ex-NFL stars.) Loved the Molly Ringwald underpants moment (Lester: "I'm a man!") and shuddered at Jeff eating the urinal cake ("I still win, right?"). And it was adorable to see Morgan swayed by the plight of an ex-con who spent years with only five kinds of soda.

Some other thoughts:

Please tell me I'm not the only one who saw the Tyler Martin fans in the Buy More and thought of Rex Manning day.
Now that I think about it, tattoos would actually be a clever way to move international secrets.
Sarah's solution to the "How do we grab a rock star in broad daylight?" problem: wave sexily.
Chuck's pre-shot toast: "See you guys in the emergency room!"

Twilight Leads the People's Choice Awards Nominations

The 36th annual People's Choice Awards nominees are here, and last year's Twilight is leading the charge! American Idol's Kris Allen was among the announcers this morning for the nominees, which also include lots of nods for The Proposal - but of course, everyone's favorite bloodsucking love story landed in many categories, including favorite on-screen movie team.

Why didn't they look to 2009's New Moon? Because last year's nominations debuted before the first movie in the Twilight saga.

FlashForward Breakdown, "Black Swan"

It's been two weeks since the blackouts, and in this week's episode of FlashForward, the people of the world are slowing getting back into their old routines. The only problem is, their outlook on the world is a bit marred to say the least. Nicole finally resurfaces, Olivia and Bryce spar over the meaning of the flashforwards, and Demetri and Mark come to blows.

We get a little more insight, a glimpse at Dominic Monaghan and one very big reveal, so just read more.

Can the future really save people?
Olivia and Bryce meet Edward Ned (who hilariously insists on being called "Ned Ned"), a new patient with a constant sense of calm and a conviction that in sixth months he'll have transformed into a black man ("like Oprah black"). At first he just seems nuts, until Bryce uses Ned's vision to diagnose him. Still trying to convince herself that the flashforwards may not come true, Olivia refuses to use Bryce's method and nearly kills Ned before changing her mind. Ned declares that the "future saved him" and Bryce agrees. But what about the people who are afraid of their visions? Can the future save them too, in that they can somehow avoid what they see? (Side note: I almost choked when I recognized Ned as Todd from Wedding Crashers).

Does Nicole deserve to be punished?
Nicole finally picks up her baby-sitting gig again, and it's revealed that she and Aaron are connected through his daughter Tracy. Clearly disturbed by her vision, Nicole seeks out a priest in hopes to start some volunteer work. She eventually reveals to Mark that she's being drowned in her flashforward, and the murder feels deserved. But why? Mark assures her that she did nothing wrong, but we all know it won't be that simple. In the pilot Nicole is gettin' busy on the couch while Charlie is sleeping, so she has a bad girl side. But now that she knows her possible fate, what could she do to warrant a punishment like that? Also, I could be wrong about this - but her attacker looked like he could definitely be Dominic Monaghan, aka Simon.

What's the deal with Alda Herzog?
Referred to as the "female Osama Bin Laden," Alda Herzog is clearly shady - but what does she know about the blackouts? She toys with both Demetri and Mark, sending them on a wild goose chase to the Customer Choice Restaurant Group, and later telling Mark that he's just "a little boy in the dark." She easily gets a rise out of both of them, even prompting Mark and Demetri to start a fist fight. I can't help but wonder if she's got them totally wrapped around her finger, a la Nazi Guyer from last week's episode, or if she's really sent Mark down the right path to get some answers.

How is LLoyd Simcoe involved in the blackout?
Lloyd continues to struggle with caring for Dylan after spending so many years as an absentee father. He continues to try to garner help from Olivia, but she pushes him away in constant fear of her flashforward. Lloyd has a tender moment at Dylan's house as he attempts to learn a little bit about his boy, and the two make a connection back at the hospital. Everything is all puppies and roses until he gets a call from Simon - who implies that the two are responsible for causing the blackouts.

Other points:

I loved the Shakespeare in Love throwback when Mark is being silly with Charlie: "You're the Shakespeare of cheesy dad humor!"

The opening of the episode, set to Bjork's "It's Oh So Quiet" was a very poetic way to look at the blackouts - especially since we can't hear all the catastrophic noise and commotion that usually defines the incident.

There seems to be a long focus on the "Pimp" necklace during the trailer park scene. Is that going to come back to haunt us?

FlashForward Breakdown, "137 Sekunden"

This week's episode of FlashForward isn't exactly action-packed, but we do finally meet a few significant others - including Demetri's fiancee, Zoe - and get a bit more character insight and some clues about the blackout. Not to mention the introduction of one creepy former Nazi.

It wasn't my favorite of the first three episodes, but this show is still keeping me on the edge of my seat. Would ABC just pick up the full season already? To break it all down, just read more.

Did Mark and Janis get played?
The focal point of this week's episode is wrapped up in Guyer, a former Nazi who's imprisoned in Germany but sees his flashforward as a bargaining chip for freedom. When Mark hears that he makes an appearance in Guyer's vision, he and Janis soon square off about whether or not his "information" is worth setting a Nazi free. In the end, Guyer's biggest revelation is that the crows seem to have blacked out and died at the same time as the human race did. Janis and Mark are disappointed at first, until Mark realizes that this isn't the first time crows have "blacked out." Last week there was talk of pigeons, now crows. Could the mysterious blackouts be all wrapped up in birds?
Did Zoe really see Demetri in her flashforward?
Yay! This week we finally get to meet Demetri's fiancee, Zoe (Gabrielle Union). Am I the only one who is loving the couples on this show? Mark and Olivia are often very sweet together, but I'm also digging Demetri and Zoe's younger love. When Zoe describes her wedding day flashforward to Demetri, she seems totally confident that he is there - but does she actually see him, or just assume as much? While some of the other visions seem hard to believe given the six-month interim period (Olivia sleeps with a new man, boyfriend-less Janis is already pregnant) - this one takes the cake for me. If Demetri is really murdered, could his fiancee recover and find a new man to wed that quickly? I'm banking on the glimmer of hope that this means Demetri can overturn his fate.
Is Tracy alive or not?
Determined to get to the bottom of the veracity of his flashforward, Aaron pays a visit to his ex-wife, hoping to get her permission to exhume their daughter's body for DNA. We see that Aaron's not the only one who's been deeply impacted by his daughter's death, though Katie still refuses to sign the affidavit. Eventually, Aaron gets around it and has Demetri dig up the body - though the DNA is a match, meaning that Tracy really is dead. So, is Aaron lying or is it possible that his vision may not come true after all? I'm wondering if this could be a sign that some of the flashforwards come true and others don't? Though, I have a feeling that we'll still see Aaron heading to Afghanistan sometime soon.

Other points:

Nicole the babysitter is still MIA (perhaps spending some time in that other life of hers). I'm dying to know what she saw, so hopefully she comes back soon.

Um, isn't Dominic Monaghan supposed to be on the show? Let's add him to the list of people we want to see next week.

If all the crows die in the flashforward, what about the other animals? Is there going to be a tie-in to that kangaroo we saw hopping around?

Is Demetri going to report Jerome Murphy and his bong-hitting ways? I totally would!
