TV Tonight: Dirty Sexy Money

Dirty Sexy Money is back tonight! ABC is airing the final four episodes of the canceled series, but before we actually pick up the show where we left it off . . . they're going to play the Thanksgiving episode they skipped without warning back in November. At the time, we saw a preview for episode #207, titled "The Facts," which boasted juicy storylines like the return of Juliet Darling (Samaire Armstrong), but the show ended up just skipping a week and going on to three more episodes before abruptly stopping.

After tonight's Thanksgiving episode, ABC will air the final three episodes over the next three weeks. The series apparently does solve some of the mysteries and come to some sort of conclusion. Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, Dirty Sexy Money Not Picked Up

ABC has decided against ordering more episodes of Pushing Daisies, Eli Stone, and Dirty Sexy Money, at least for now, writes The Hollywood Reporter. The story continues:

Actively avoiding the c-word, the network left the door open for ordering more episodes at a future date, though that is considered improbable. The trio are still on the schedule for next week.

Pushing Daisies has wrapped production on its 13 episodes for this season, while Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone will be able to finish their initial orders. There's no word on whether all of those episodes will air between now and when ABC's midseason schedule kicks off in January, though.

Meanwhile, this makes it official that Life on Mars will air after Lost starting in January. Scrubs will also join the Wednesday schedule.

Deep sigh. It's not like this is a shocking surprise for these shows (which all have gotten critical acclaim - especially Daisies - but have struggled in the ratings). But it's still, you know, sad. Can we start the collective wailing in the comments?

Buzz In: Have You Broken Up With Any "Relaunched" Shows?

The Fall of 2007 came in with great fanfare in the TV world, only to be squashed just weeks later by the writers' strike. For this Fall, some networks focused on "relaunching" those shows cut short because of the strike: Chuck and Life on NBC, and Pushing Daisies, Private Practice, and Dirty Sexy Money on ABC. (Though it's now in its third season, Heroes probably falls into this category, too.)

The good news: Many of those shows might not have gotten renewed without the writers' strike. But the bad news has been coming in droves ever since, with many of these shows finishing last in their time slots and hitting series lows. In fact, not a single one has broken 10 million viewers yet - Heroes included.

A lot of longtime returning shows are down a little this year, too, but not this dramatically. So I'm wondering: Have you dropped any of the "relaunched" shows from your TV lineup? Have you replaced them with anything? And why do you think viewers aren't coming back for this "re-freshman class"?

First Look: Dirty Sexy Money's Second Season

The last episode of ABC's Dirty Sexy Money aired so long ago, it had a Nutcracker theme. The show - like its counterparts in ABC's Wednesday night lineup, Pushing Daisies and Private Practice - went off the air during the writers' strike and never returned. This week, Dirty Sexy Money is back, amid a bunch of promises from the producers that this year's show will be "dirtier," "sexier," and - you got it - "monier."

Along those lines, they've added Lucy Liu to the cast as Nola Lyons, a "whip-smart, overachieving, and very fashionable" attorney who goes up against Peter Krause's Nick George. Nick, meanwhile, will find himself more affected by the over-the-top wealth and naughty antics of the Darlings, even as he tries to stay on the sidelines.

The show's gone through a lot of turmoil since its premiere (several executive producers, episodes that were reshot or ditched altogether), but I'm hoping Dirty Sexy Money can pull it together for season two. All of the new DVD releases hit stores (and Netflix) on Tuesdays. So each week in What to Netflix: New DVD Tuesday, I sort through the best of the batch and tell you what to add to your queue. Today's a big day for several television series that are now available for the first time on DVD. Whether you love these shows and want to cherish them forever or just need a refresher before the next seasons start up again, here's a guide to what's out this week.

Pushing Daisies: Season One
Special features include the cast and creative team members chatting about the show secrets.
Dirty Sexy Money: Season One
Special features include bloopers, deleted scenes, and creator commentary on the inspiration for the Darling family.

Private Practice: Season One
Special features include a featurette titled, "Practice makes perfect - Journey with Kate through her acting career to see how she landed one of TV's most sought-after roles," behind-the-scenes footage, extended episodes, deleted scenes, and outtakes.
Chuck: Season One

read more! Deception This thriller boasts an exciting cast, and in my opinion the performances make this a great choice for some at-home entertainment. Of course, this is at-home adult entertainment as the plot of Deception centers on a secret high-class sex club for New York's elite. Ewan McGregor plays Jonathan McQuarry, the quiet and reclusive accountant lured into this world, Michelle Williams is the beautiful member of the club he falls in love with, and Hugh Jackson slithers into the skin of a mysterious evildoer. Special features include commentary with director Marcel Langenegger, a featurette on the making of the film and something titled "Club Sexy." Your guess is as good as mine on that one. Young @ Heart Oh man, elderly folks singing rock songs - is there anything more soul touching? It made me cry, but they were tears of joy, the result of something wonderfully life-affirming pulling at the old heart strings. Young @ Heart is a documentary that follows a group of older folks who learn "young people's" tunes, like those by the Ramones, David Bowie, and Gloria Gaynor. The result? An adorable, funny, inspiring, hopeful little movie about growing old in America. Special features include 10 deleted scenes and a featurette titled "Young @ Heart Goes to Hollywood."

TCA Tidbits: Private Practice, Ashton, Dancing With the Wii

Between Katie Holmes, Katherine Heigl, and that hilarious Scrubs panel, ABC's session at the TCA press tour has already been action-packed. And it's only getting nuttier today, when Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse, and the ladies of Desperate Housewives take the stage. Before we get to that, here are some great stories I didn't get to share on Wednesday:

One of the reasons I'm looking forward to the Private Practice panel: The show is apparently going to go through something of an overhaul. There will be a greater emphasis on strong medical cases, with the hospital playing a greater role and Kate Walsh's character getting back to doing surgery. "When it just became a soap opera about these people's lives it was just a lot of talking," ABC Entertainment President Steve McPherson said. "That's not what Shonda does well."
At the start of ABC's session, a special reporter addressed the crowd. Identifying himself as "Tom Weinerman from the Sarasota Star-Herald-Tribune," he asked a series of awkward questions of McPherson, including whether ABC was courting Jay Leno and how McPherson keeps his hair so nice. The secret: "Tom Weinerman" was Jimmy Kimmel, relatively incognito as he sat among the reporters.
McPherson insisted that Life on Mars, ABC's remake of the popular BBC series, isn't troubled - despite the fact that it hasn't shot a pilot, is still casting, and only had two actors (Jason O'Mara and Michael Imperioli) in place in time for its session. The show is ABC's only new drama for Fall, so for the network's sake I hope he's right . . .

Lucy Liu's Safety Net: Dirty Sexy Money

It's not like anyone's actually coming right out and saying that Cashmere Mafia is canceled, but let's face it: When the star bails for another show, it's probably not a good sign.

Lucy Liu, most recently seen as Mafia leader Mia, is now in negotiations to star on Dirty Sexy Money. She'd join the cast as a regular character, playing an attorney who may or may not have anything to do with Peter Krause's attorney character, Nick George. Technically, the show would be second priority to Cashmere Mafia - but chances are, Liu's not going to have to worry about that.

I like the idea of Liu on Dirty Sexy Money - lawyer characters seem to be her style (see also: Ugly Betty), and she'll still get to wear fabulous clothes. Plus, maybe she'll be written just a bit sharper than Mia, who always seemed a little too wishy-washy for her own good.

Can you see Liu hobnobbing with the Darlings? And where should the other Cashmere Mafia regulars land if they do have to jump ship? I suppose it's a little late to swap Bonnie Somerville for Lipstick Jungle's Lindsay Price, right? But I could see Frances O'Connor fitting right in on Wisteria Lane . . .

Rewind: This Week's Buzz

CBS learned a big lesson this week: Britney equals ratings gold. I learned you should never mess with the fanboys of Fanboys.
The Oliver Stone Bush biopic cast is quickly filling out. I wonder who's going to play Dick Cheney? Which reminds me, all that horse-loving talk aside, I'm starting to think Kristy Lee Cook is an evil genius.
This is one of those weeks where TV news makes a lot of sense and then none at all. I can understand why there is interest in shows about escorts after the Spitzer scandal. But a show that's just people falling? Really?
More good stuff came out of the Paley Festival in Los Angeles this week, including the goods on Gossip Girl, Damages and Dirty Sexy Money.
Well it's the end of the road for the March book club, thanks to everyone for reading along! I'm really excited about April's book, The Life Before Her Eyes.
