These days, you pretty much know what you're getting into with any film adapted from a Nicholas Sparks book, and The Lucky One, out this Friday, is the latest in his line of romances. The poster alone features famous Sparks conventions - a couple standing face to face, about to kiss - and it got me thinking about the other common themes that show up repeatedly in Nicholas Sparks movies.

Dear John

The Nicholas Sparks adaptation follows an army guy (Channing Tatum) and college girl (Amanda Seyfried) who find love one Summer, and embark on a long-distance relationship via a series of letters. I was fully hoping to be swept off my feet by the Sparks story a la The Notebook, but unfortunately, the actors could only do so much with the film's contrived plot. Rent it for Richard Jenkins's performance - and to watch Tatum act all sensitive (awww). Bonus extras include alternate scenes and an outtake reel.

True Blood: The Complete Second Season

If you haven't already noticed all of the coverage right here on BuzzSugar, the True Blood phenomenon is at a fever pitch as the show approaches its third season. HBO has been releasing a series of minisodes and clever ad campaigns, but if you really want to get prepped, the entire second season comes out this week to get you up-to-date on the neck-biting, shape-shifting madness. Bonus extras include audio commentaries with the cast and crew and "The Vampire Report," a campy half-hour news show.

The Road

Warning: The Road is a bleak and depressing end-of-the-world tale, much like the Cormac McCarthy novel on which it is based. You may not want to rent it to just kill a couple hours on your Saturday, but the film's solid execution and a fantastic performance by Viggo Mortensen make it worth considering. Mortensen plays Man, a father to a young boy who is traveling with his son to the South in the midst of apocalyptic street gangs and a treacherous environment that can no longer sustain life. When his fortitude and his humanity are tested, we feel his frustration; more importantly, his moral dilemmas get us to think as the viewers. Bonus extras include deleted and extended scenes.

Channing Has Jenna and Amanda For a Dear Premiere

Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried hit the red carpet in London tonight for the UK premiere of Dear John. Jenna Dewan and her blue eyelashes stuck right by her husband, after the duo made the trek to England from LA late last week. The adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks book already was deemed a success when it came out in the US in February and impressively managed to end Avatar's run at the top of the box office. Jenna has been there for Channing at many screenings of his film, but he'll also have lots of chances to return the favor since she's just picked up a new role of her own.

February may be a short month, but there has been plenty of movie, TV, and music offerings. While there was a lot to cheer about, not everything was stellar, as much as it pains me to say. Want to know which rocked my world and which didn't measure up? I've broken it down into the best and worst of the month right here.

Box Office: Valentine's Day Charms Its Way to No. 1

Audiences are smitten with Valentine's Day. Lackluster reviews couldn't stop the A-list rom-com from placing in the top spot at the box office with an intake of $52.4 million.

Other openers Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and The Wolfman earned second and third place with $31.1 million and $30.6 million respectively, making this weekend the highest grossing President's Day tally to date.

Avatar and Dear John continued to cling to spots in the top five. James Cameron claimed another $22 million for his pet project for No. 4, while the Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried vehicle took a significant 50 percent hit, bringing in $15 million for No. 5.

Box Office: Dear John Pushes Avatar Out of the Top Spot

Surprise - it finally happened! After seven straight weeks at No. 1 and record-breaking ticket sales, Avatar got the boot. Which film pulled off the upset? Well, it wasn't Valentine's Day as the majority of you guessed, but Dear John. The Nicholas Sparks romance took in $32.4 million in its debut week in theaters, dethroning the James Cameron box office king which came in second with $23.6 million.

Despite mixed feelings on John Travolta's From Paris With Love, the new film ranked in at third in its first week with $8.1 million. Edge of Darkness followed close behind at No. 4 with $7 million, and Tooth Fairy finished out the top five with $6.5 million.
