Anne Frank + Disney + Mamet = What?

My first reaction to this movie news today was, "Well, at least it's not another sequel or straight-up remake." Rather, Disney and writer/director David Mamet are getting together to reimagine the story of Anne Frank. Here's more:

The film will be an amalgamation of the famed diary; the stage adaptation by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich; and Mamet's own original take on the material that could reframe the story as a young girl's rite of passage.

[Producer Andrew] Braunsberg, best known for producing Being There, spent a year gathering the rights from the Anne Frank Estate as well as the estates of Hackett and Goodrich. He met with ICM's John Burnham, who recommended Mamet. Mamet sparked to the opportunity tell the story, and he is already writing the script.

Whenever I see Mamet's name I think of his way with satire and his characters' sometimes, ah, colorful language. Though I wouldn't have thought to put him on an Anne Frank project, I'm actually really excited to see how he shapes the well-known story.

Movie Preview: Chiwetel Ejiofor in David Mamet's Redbelt

When I'm looking for a movie with strong writing and snappy dialogue, I often reach for something by David Mamet. This spring, the writer/director is turning his eye to the boxing ring with Redbelt, the story of a martial arts instructor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who stays far away from the high-pressure competition circuit - until mysterious circumstances force him into the ring to pay off debts and regain his honor.

Honestly, I've watched the trailer a couple of times now, and I still can't say I fully understand what the story is about. But it's Mamet, so I'm willing to believe it will all make sense when the movie is released this spring. Plus, it stars both Ejiofor and Emily Mortimer, two of my favorite actors, which alone makes me want to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Movie News of the Weird

This week, there have been several movie news items that have left me either scratching my head or chuckling to myself. Thus, I've collected some of these headlines for a kind of mini-news roundup... of the weird.

Jessica Biel and Forest Whitaker will take to the screen. Together. The film, titled Powder Blue, "finds four eclectic characters - a mortician, an ex-con, a suicidal ex-priest and a stripper - brought together on Christmas Eve by a mixture of circumstances." I'm going to venture a guess that Whitaker is not the stripper.
Elijah Wood to play Iggy Pop? Bizarre.

At first I was intrigued by the news that David Mamet has written another screenplay. Then I found out it is called Redbelt and is a Jiu-jitsu film (scratching head begins...), and it stars Chiwetel Ejiofor (who I love). And now there's someone joining Ejiofor: Tim Allen. Tim. Allen. In a Jiu-jitsu movie by the man who brought us Glengarry Glen Ross and Wag the Dog, among others. Could be awesome? Maybe?
It sounds like Felicity Huffman is going for a kind of Georgia Rule: The Prequel with Phoebe in Wonderland, which stars Elle Fanning as "a rebellious little girl who clashes with the rule-obsessed authority figures in her life." I'll definitely be seeing it, however, since another great actress, Patricia Clarkson, will play the little girl's "unconventional drama teacher." Phoebe rule!
More just cool than weird, Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg are collaborating on the three back-to-back features based on the beloved Belgian comic series, The Adventures of Tintin. That is going to be one unbelievable project, I can taste it.

TV Tonight: "The Unit"

I've never gotten into "The Unit," but it seems like a show I should love. The CBS drama is produced by David Mamet, who I tend to think can do no wrong, and I'm intrigued by the premise of an elite Special Forces team who must complete dangerous and top-secret missions around the world.

Tonight might be a good time for me to finally check it out, because CBS is airing two new episodes back-to-back. In the first, a mission in North Korea is compromised when a spy overhears the wife of one Unit member talking about something that seems eerily similar to the mission. In the second, the Unit runs into trouble while planting radiation detectors at the site of a suspected reactor. CBS has a preview of tonight's episodes, and to see a clip,

HBO's Girls Premieres With Creator Lena Dunham, Producer Judd Apatow, and Famous Fans

HBO's new series Girls premiered at the School of Visual Arts Theater in NYC. The series is the brainchild of Lena Dunham, whose first big movie Tiny Furniture debuted in 2010. The film caught the eye of Judd Apatow, who reached out to Lena to see if she needed help with any projects. Their friendship helped bring Girls to TV, and Judd worked closely with Lena on the 10 episodes of the first season. The program centers around the friendships of four ladies living in NYC, and the plot has raised some inevitable comparisons to HBO's other landmark series about Big Apple women - Sex and the City. Girls, though, is a grittier look at the lives of 20-somethings and the mistakes they make, both personally and professionally.

Lena also stars in the show, along with Allison Williams, Zosia Mamet, and Jemima Kirke. Plenty of famous friends came out to support the cast, including a Preen-clad Claire Danes, Kyra Sedgwick, and Kevin Bacon. Allison, whose father is NBC's Brian Williams, wore a gorgeous white Donna Karan dress and Kwiat jewels. Zosia also has a well-known dad, writer David Mamet, and Jemima's father was in the band Bad Company! Brian and his wife Jane swung by the afterparty at the Standard Hotel.

Lena spoke to us last night about when Judd first reached out to her. She said, "I thought that it was a prank when Judd first got in touch with me. I thought my friend Isabel was emailing me using this weird technology that lets you pretend your email address is someone else's email address!" The affection is certainly mutual between Lena and Judd. He raved of Lena, "She's so funny, and she has a unique vision." Check out our full red-carpet report later today on PopSugar Rush.
