Kathy Bates and David E. Kelley Take TV Together For Harry's Law

When new midseason series Harry's Law popped onto the stage during the Winter TCA, we got a visit from a couple of movie and TV veterans, respectively: Kathy Bates and David E. Kelley. The star and its creator, along with the show's other stars like Nate Corddry and Brittany Snow, talked about the darkly comedic law drama, about a lawyer (Bates's character Harriet, aka Harry) who sets up an unconventional law practice in a run-down Cincinnati shoe store.

The character of Harry was originally written to be a man, Kelley said, describing the original vision of him as "a curmudgeonly, cantankerous old grump." When they couldn't find the right actor, it was opened up to a woman, and executive producer Bill D'Ella's wife suggested Bates. And it wasn't hard for Bates to come around to the character. When reading the pilot, Bates said she loved that "she had her feet up on the desk, smoking pot and watching Bugs Bunny. After that I was in."
When asked whether having an older woman leading a TV show was a tough sell, Kelley credits his star for it not being an issue. He said, "It's one thing to have a 60-year-old lead, [but] it's quite another to have Kathy Bates as your lead." Once Bates was in, there was no hesitation from the network.
I was excited to see Snow on the panel, and she talked a little bit about her character Jenna, Harriet's assistant, whom she described as "quirky and crazy and all over the place." The adorable Snow was clearly in awe of Bates, calling her "the epitome of a class-act," and said that it's been a pleasure learning from the actress she calls "a legend."

Three cheers for the red, white, and blue: Wonder Woman is returning to TV with lasso in tow. The DC comic heroine had her heyday in the '70s with a popular series, but now comes word of a brand-new reboot with David E. Kelley as writer and producer.

It's not the first time that the character has made news in recent years. Rumors of a film have been circling for eons with Megan Fox and Jessica Biel both mentioned as candidates to don the star-studded hot pants. It may be a while until that comes to fruition, so for now, fanboys will have to settle for watching her spin on the small screen. It's kind of a risky move, if you ask me. I'm all for getting another kickass lady in my TV rotation, but is a modern-day version entirely necessarily when the original is still so iconic?

Kristin Chenoweth + David E Kelley = Lots of Legal Quirkiness

I'm hardly done with mourning the death of Pushing Daisies, but this news will probably help to get me on the road to recovery: Kristin Chenoweth will be back on our TVs before long as the star of the next legal show from David E. Kelley.

When we first heard about this quirky drama, all we knew is that it would be on NBC and focus on a father and daughter who were both lawyers. Now there are more details, and they're pretty hilarious: The show is called Legally Mad, and Chenoweth will play Skippy Pylon (yeah), a brilliant but kind of unstable attorney who's prone to bouts of psychosis. The description also notes that Skippy's occasionally mistaken for a teenager.

Kelley told the Hollywood Reporter:

I could only picture Kristin playing this role. I've wanted to work with her for a long time and can't wait to reveal her as someone who's completely mad.

Chenoweth was simply born to play a Skippy, and Pushing Daisies showed she can handle quirk. I have just two questions: 1) Will Kelley find a way for her to sing? And 2) Who's going to play dear ol' dad? Fire away with casting suggestions in the comments.

David E. Kelley might be a love-him-or-loathe-him writer, but he's created several of the more iconic series of the past couple of decades. Now that he's got a new series on the horizon for NBC, I figured it might be a good time to ask: Which show is your favorite of Kelley's career thus far?

NBC Lands David E. Kelley's Newest Legal Show

He's already got Ally McBeal, The Practice, and Boston Legal under his belt, and now David E. Kelley plans to deliver yet another legal dramedy - this time to NBC.

The network just landed Kelley's latest pilot, a venture we first heard about last week. Details are still scarce, but we know the basics now: the show, like most of Kelley's, is a drama with a comedic bent, and it will focus on a father and daughter who are both lawyers.

While I can occasionally be caught rolling my eyes and complaining about "yet another legal show," network TV actually doesn't have too many of them these days; in fact, once Boston Legal is gone after this season, Eli Stone could be the only one standing. I suppose Kelley is a pretty good place to turn for a possible legal series revival, and until I hear otherwise, I'm choosing to think of this as "Ally and her dad start a law firm."

Troubled Life on Mars Adaptation Could Have Life on ABC

One of the pilots I've been curious about for more than a year now is ABC's remake of the BBC series Life on Mars, which followed a police officer who found himself somehow transported to 1973. The remake, which David E. Kelley was writing and producing, was originally expected to be considered for the current TV season - but Kelley had trouble finding a man to play his lead character, so the pilot was never made.

Fast-forward a year. Jason O'Mara (at left), most recently seen as the brain tumor/bear attack guy on Grey's Anatomy, has been cast as officer Sam Tyler, the pilot has been filmed, and all is going well. In fact, ABC is reportedly close to giving the show a spot on its schedule ahead of next week's upfronts.

Oh, except there's one more problem: Now Kelley might leave, and since he owns the U.S. rights to the show, its future is mostly up to him. One option has the October Road team coming on to run the show, which makes my stomach feel a bit queasy; I've seen several episodes of the original Life on Mars, and while Kelley might not be the perfect fit to write a remake, I think he's closer than the Road folks.

After all of this, I'm wondering if Life on Mars is even a show people want to see. I wasn't familiar with O'Mara until his recent Grey's arc, and he bugged me there - but that could have been the character's fault, not his. Would you want to watch more of him? Michelle Does The Walk Of Fame

Michelle Pfeiffer looked fabulously toned to perfection as she proudly posed next to her brand new star on the Walk of Fame and her husband, David E. Kelley. She also had the support of cutie Paul Rudd (who co-stars in her upcoming movie, I Could Never Be Your Woman). Michelle made sure to pay tribute to her mother, saying "There are so many people that go into the making of an actor's career, and first and foremost I want to thank my mother, who isn't here right now." This is a long overdue honor in our opinion, but we're just glad to see the ageless beauty finally get the recognition that she deserves.

Adrianne Palicki Shows Off Her New Wonder Woman Costume

Adrianne Palicki sprung into action on the set of Wonder Woman in LA last night. She was showing off a different suit than the one we saw a couple of weeks ago, and the costume was apparently toned down since fans weren't digging all that shiny spandex. Personally, I'm liking this new version much better, though we'll have to wait until next Fall to see Palicki on the small screen (assuming David E. Kelley's pilot is picked up, that is). In the meantime, you can vote on which superhero movie you're most excited to see!
