Pilot Scoop: Running Wilde

I've already given you a refresher on the returning Fall TV shows, but we still have a few more newbies to cover too (keep them all straight with this calendar). For today's pilot scoop, take a look at Fox's new comedy, Running Wilde.

What it's about: Steven Wilde (Will Arnett) is the self-centered, not-too-bright son of an oil tycoon who lives in the lap of luxury thanks to daddy's dollars. Steven's only friends are the help and a competitive next-door neighbor, but he continues to long for the one childhood girl who got away: Emmy Kadubic (Keri Russell). Emmy now resides in the jungle with her fiancé (David Cross) and daughter Puddle (Stefania Owen), where they spend their days helping indigenous people. In an effort to get in Emmy's good graces (and her pants), Steven gives himself a humanitarian award so she'll return for the ceremony and the two can rekindle the old flame.

Where it works: Arrested Development writers James Vallely and Mitchell Hurwitz are behind the script, giving us small glimmers of the offbeat humor that made that show a cult favorite. Of course, it helps that they have some of the same actors - Arnett and Cross - delivering lines.

Where it doesn't: The series was already off to a shaky start when producers decided to re-shoot the pilot and swap a few cast members. Despite the change, the humor still feels like it's trying too hard, and some characters are grossly unrealistic to the point of being unlikeable. I'm also disappointed by Russell who feels like the wrong casting choice (even though I love her).

Am I hooked? I like the actors, so I'll keep watching and hope the show improves.

When is it on? Running Wilde premieres Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 9:30 p.m

Arrested Development Reunion! Cross Joins Running Wilde

Gob Bluth is about to get a little help from his brother-in-law - David Cross is joining Will Arnett and the rest of the cast of Running Wilde as a series regular! Cross will play a radical environmentalist (a part that originally belonged to a different actor in the show's pilot). With two former Arrested Development stars coming together this Fall, could we be in store for more cameos on the newbie show? Portia de Rossi seems to be available . . .

Jennifer Plays With Demi, Emily, and Naomi in NYC

Jennifer Aniston was in LA last week for a wedding with her stylist, but she popped up in NYC last night to take part in the annual 24 Hour Plays on Broadway. She joined a handful of actor couples for the evening, including Emily Blunt and John Krasinski as well as Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts. Demi Moore was a lot more covered up than her recent W cover, as she posed with husband Ashton Kutcher. Jennifer joined her fellow thespians onstage to sing "Yellow Submarine" and take part in the hastily-written theater exercise, which was held to benefit arts in education programs in public schools. She took her bow next to a similarly-dressed Brooke Shields before moving on for some after-hours fun with Ashton and Demi.

Michael Cera and Jack Black Start Off at Year One

Michael Cera and Jack Black coordinated in purple accents for the premiere of Year One in NYC last night. Their costar Christopher Mintz-Plasse was lucky enough to have gorgeous Zoe Kravitz on his arm, who stood out in her glittery dress among all the funny men on the red carpet. Ed Helms also came out to show his support, and even though The Hangover will be getting some competition at the box office this weekend, he and the boys already have a sequel in the works.

David Cross, Michael Vartan to Star in Demoted

When I think of David Cross I think "ooh, funny!" (actually I think "never-nude" but that's for another conversation). When I think of Michael Vartan I think first "hot" and then "Vaughn," but never "funny!" And yet, these two will be paired up for the comedy Demoted. The Hollywood Reporter has more details:

Vartan will play Rodney McAdams, a hotshot Treadline Tires sales associate who delights in tormenting his less-than-cool colleague, Ken (Cross). But when their boss suddenly dies, Ken is promoted and assigns Rodney to a secretarial job as payback, giving the male chauvinist a taste of his own medicine.

I love to see Cross getting more work. And though these two seem strange together, maybe they'll have a great funny man/straight man thing going on. What do you think?

Mr. Show's David Cross and Bob Odenkirk, Together Again

And now, for some news that should warm the heart of any Mr. Show fan in the universe: David Cross and Bob Odenkirk are teaming up again, this time for an HBO comedy that's going to begin shooting this spring. They confirmed on their vaguely NSFW Web site that the pilot has officially been picked up and they'll soon be working together to "make funny TV happen." Oh, yes.

Cross has said the show, tentatively titled David's Situation, is a sitcom that pokes fun at sitcoms, with him starring as a fed-up, washed-up actor who's left Hollywood for the glamorous world of in-flight magazines. He's living in a gated community somewhere with two crazy roommates, one of whom is a cranky conservative and the other of whom is a left-leaning liberal. Of course, knowing Cross, this could all be a lie, and he's actually starring in a show about a farm in outer space. Who really knows?

My favorite thing Cross has mentioned is their plain for the commercial breaks. HBO, of course, doesn't have advertising, so he and Odenkirk plan to write their own faux commercials to play during the show where normal networks would have ad breaks. Advertising parodies were always one of my favorite parts of Mr. Show, so I'm glad they'll be churning out more twisted fake propaganda soon. Movie Preview: The Grand

When I first saw the poster for The Grand I had to groan. Not another casino movie! But then I looked a little closer and found some familiar, welcome names like Cheryl Hines, David Cross, Chris Parnell, Judy Greer and Woody Harrelson. The Game is a mockumentary-style spoof on professional gaming, with a ridiculously talented cast full of funny people.

You just have to check out this trailer for the movie which opens in limited release March 21. And in case you're wondering, yes, "The Scary German" is legendary German director Werner Herzog (Rescue Dawn, Grizzly Man, Little Dieter Needs to Fly). Hilarious.

First Look: Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan in "I'm Not There"

When I first heard that Cate Blanchett was going to be one of the actors portraying Bob Dylan in a new biopic about the singer, I'm Not There, I was intrigued.

When I first saw this photo of Cate as Bob Dylan, I was impressed.

But when I saw this first clip from the movie, all my hopes were dashed. I'm certainly not trying to knock Cate's acting chops - if any woman could pull it off, it would be her - but this is downright ridiculous. I mean, unless I was under the wrong impression and this is supposed to be a comedy...but I don't think that is the case.

David Cross is playing Allen Ginsberg? And driving around in a zany golf cart-ish mobile? Uh, okay!

Honestly, it's a little painful, but maybe it will be better in context? Let's hope. To see the clip just

The Results Are In: Recast Father of the Bride

Every Wednesday on BuzzSugar, I post a Recast challenge, where I ask you to choose new actors for a classic TV show or movie and the winner gets a BuzzSugar t-shirt!

This week's special wedding-themed recast was the 1991 comedy Father of the Bride which starred Steve Martin, Diane Keaton and Kimberly Williams. The recast lists you all came up with were super fun - I especially enjoyed Livience's all-black recast featuring Bernie Mac and Beyonce Knowles.

Also, WhiplashGirlchild's "real life couple" cast is awesome, starring Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling (ignoring break up rumors).

Yet my favorite recast overall came from Pinkrabbit, whose creative list features one of my all-time favorite comedic actors in the role of Franck: David Cross. Congrats, Pinkrabbit!

Comedian David Cross Rocks Out On Guitar Hero

One of the funniest men on the planet David Cross was caught having a geek moment at SXSW this weekend when he busted out some Guitar Hero with the hilarious NYC based standup comedian Aziz Ansari.

I got a chance to see Ansari at the 2005 SF Sketch Fest where he did an entire routine of geek jokes and exposed his brother for being a hardcore online gamer - I was the only person in the audience that was actually moved to tears of laughter, but the act was enjoyed by all.

Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 is set to be released next month and will apparently feature a fresh and expanded set list of over 70 songs, including 10 exclusive tracks for the Xbox 360. It will have HD remodeled characters, unlockable guitars, and different gameplay modes. Also competitive rockthusiasts will be able to go online to compare their scores and view how they rank through an intuitive online leaderboard, as well as download content on Xbox Live Marketplace such as gamer themes, picture packs, and most importantly, a consistent stream of new tracks. For all of you fans out there you can pre-order Guitar Hero II online now and it will ship on April 3. Rock on!
