Halloween How-To: David Bowie

If you're in the mood for a truly rock-and-roll costume, people don't come much cooler than David Bowie. The androgynous, glam-rock look of his Aladdin Sane years takes a bit of energy to pull off, but it's worth the effort. MAC senior makeup artist Louise Zizzo, who did the Jem makeup tutorial, shows us how to get this space-rocker look.

For a list of colors used in this transformation,

Brows: Louise used glue stick to tame the eyebrows and to prepare them to be covered with concealer.
Face: Contour the face with powder blush in Raizin or Fleur Power. Use a fluffy brush to give skin an airbrushed effect.
Design: Sketch the design with a light brow pencil. Louise used Chromacake to fill in the red and blue, but you can get a similar look with other products. Try the red part of Danger Zone eye shadow or red lipstick (just blot loose powder on top to set the color). For the blue portion of the face, Freshwater eye shadow should work. Using an angled brush like the excellent 266 brush, define the line with Fluidline in Blacktrack.
Lips: Use fingers to dab red lipstick on the lips, focusing in the middle portion. The idea is to add a hint of color without covering the lips entirely.

Buzz In: Whose Celebrity iPod Would You Want to Steal?

David Bowie recently shared his iPod playlist with The Guardian (to promote his double album A Reality Tour, naturally). The mix includes tracks "Junker's Blues" by Champion Jack Dupree, "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)" by Scritti Politti, and even some Chinese folk music. I honestly don't know who half these people are, but I'm already researching them all on iTunes.

Whenever a musician or celebrity reveals what they're listening to, I always jot down notes in the hopes of discovering a new artist or song. Take Lady Gaga, for instance - I'd love to catch a peek at the crazy stuff she listens to for inspiration. I'd also include Cameron Crowe and Jason Reitman on my iPod wish list, since their film soundtracks always prove top-notch. And if an artist has Jay-Z's stamp of approval, then the music has to be good, right?

J Brand Designs David Bowie-Inspired Denim

J Brand and LA designer Henry Duarte are teaming up to bring you some rockin' denim. Three low-rise skinny jeans, due out in December, are inspired by David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust album. Cool! The jeans, retailing for $250, have details such as exposed zippers, topstitching, and Duarte's signature lace-up front. "I wanted to combine my signature details with the simplicity that J Brand is known for, while keeping the jeans wearable and affordable," said Duarte. Sounds good, can't wait to see them live.

Love It or Leave It: TV on the Radio Covering Bowie's "Heroes"

Normally, I'm nowhere near as fond of a cover as I am of the original song (few people are, I'd wager). Usually they just sound like cheap knockoffs. So I expected little of TV on the Radio's cover of David Bowie's "Heroes," and maybe that's partially why I liked it so much. It's different from Bowie's but familiar enough to not destroy the memory of the original. Also, I'm intrigued by the fact that Bowie himself chose both the band and the song of his that they should cover for the title track of this benefit album of covers.

Take a listen and tell me: Do you dig it? Or not so much?

Heroes - TV On The Radio

JT Isn't Sure He Wants Kids But Helps Keep Them Alive

Justin Timberlake took the stage with Alicia Keys last night at the Keep a Child Alive party in NYC. JT revealed he's "not sure" if he wants children of his own but did talk about moving to Manhattan soon. He said, "It's the greatest city in the world! It's good for everything. It's good for food, there's some good fashion, there's mostly good weather except for today and it's the realest city in America." Meanwhile, current Manhattanite John Mayer gushed about how well Jen knows him before joining her for a late dinner. Chris Daughtry also performed for the glammed up Jessica Alba and the rest of the star-studded crowd as everyone came out to support the children's charity.
