First Glimpse: The New Knight Rider

OK, so this little teaser NBC just released of its two-hour Knight Rider movie is only 15 seconds long. It also doesn't reveal anything about the plot of the movie, which is set to air Feb. 17. But it does have a couple of things going for it: It offers a glimpse of the new, shiny, Ford Mustang version of KITT (also pictured at right), and it introduces Will Arnett as the car's slightly sinister voice.

When we we first heard about the plans to revive Knight Rider, there wasn't a whole lot of excitement around here - but I'm wondering if anyone out there has started to think it's a good idea. NBC is only committing to the TV movie, which centers on a character named Mike Traceur (soap star Justin Bruening), supposedly the son of David Hasselhoff's Michael Knight. But the rumor remains that the new Knight Rider could become a series if the movie gets good ratings. And really, what with the writers' strike, it's got to be better than reruns. Plus, Gob Bluth as the snarky car must count for something, right?

Strike news: A huge number of actors will be recording PSAs in support of the writers on the LA Weekly's Deadline Hollywood Daily blog; the New York Times says some showrunners have returned to their non-writing duties; the LA Times says the strike could cost the city $20 million per day; and Variety has the news that directors have reached a deal that will probably keep them off the picket lines.

NBC has Plans to Revive "Knight Rider"

Who would've thought we'd get two pieces of David Hasselhoff-related news in one week? On the heels of the new Hoff comedy comes the news that NBC wants to revive "Knight Rider," the show that first made Hoff famous.

According to Variety, NBC is planning a two-hour TV movie that could serve as a pilot for an updated series. Apparently, NBC entertainment chairman Ben Silverman was so taken by this summer's updated Transformers movie that he wants to bring the '80s series back - now with [insert TV-announcer voice here] shape-shifting cars! There might be evil cars this time, too, but Variety assures us that the story " is expected to essentially remain focused on the story of a single man fighting for justice with the help of his superadvanced car." The TV movie could be on the air sometime in the spring, with a potential series coming next fall.

I think it's funny that Silverman's line of thinking on this one seems to boil down to "transforming cars rule, dudez!" Also, I'm guessing this will turn into one giant advertisement for whichever car company decides to sponsor it. I'm too young to remember much about "Knight Rider" in its prime, so I'll defer to those of you who are a bit older: Is this sacrelige?

Seacrest to Produce Hasselhoff Comedy for E!

You have no idea how hard it was to write that headline with a straight face.
But it's true: Ryan Seacrest will be producing "Tales from the Hoff," a scripted comedy for E! focusing on a fictional character who bears a striking resemblance to David Hasselhoff. Unsurprisingly, the character will be played by the Hoff himself.

You're kidding.
Nope. Here's more: The series "will follow the fictional dark and twisted trials and tribulations of an international icon as he navigates Hollywood and the world of dating after divorce." Hm, don't you think "international icon" is overstating the case? Maybe a bit more realistically, Varlety notes that the series "also will explore the fictional icon's attempts to reinvigorate a career steeped in the past."

Insiders say the project "will have a 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' feel.
Well, it certainly does make me squirm ...

How on earth did they get this idea?
Apparently, the project "stemmed from conversations Hasselhoff had with friends about how his life might inspire an interesting TV show." Oh. So that's all it takes.
