First Look: Dylan McDermott in TNT's Dark Blue

It's almost as if when TNT was looking for its next generation of leading men, it raided the cast of the short-lived ABC series Big Shots. First, Michael Vartan turns up on this month's Hawthorne, and in July, his former costar Dylan McDermott will become the network's newest law enforcer in Dark Blue.

Dark Blue focuses on a team of undercover police officers - so undercover, in fact, that many officers in their own department don't even know their operation exists. McDermott plays Carter Shaw, the deeply flawed officer at the head of the team, whose life outside the unit is in shambles; his underlings include a newly married cop who doesn't know how to handle the relationships he forms undercover and a young patrol officer with a shady past and a penchant for lying.

The show will premiere July 15 after Leverage - a one-two punch of good-hearted criminals and corrupt cops. To check out a preview, just

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Bulks Up For an Addictive New Role

Joseph Gordon-Levitt showed up on the Hollywood set of his latest film, Don Jon's Addiction, yesterday. He ran through a scene and showed off his bulked-up frame in a tight blue t-shirt. JGL's diving into another project while his forthcoming feature The Dark Knight Rises preps for a July 20 release. Earlier this week fans got a glimpse of a new poster showing Gotham burning to the ground around Batman. I recently met with Roxanne Valinoti, an educator for CND, a professional nail product line, who showed me a cool trick for sponge-painted nails. This is definitely worth trying the next time the urge for DIY nail art strikes. (Or does that only happen to me?)

You'll need a natural sea sponge from a craft store and five different polishes: a clear base, a warm gold base, a midnight blue, a purple, and an iridescent topcoat. Sounds complicated, I know, but Valinoti did the whole thing in 15 minutes. Here's how to proceed:

Emphasis: Color theory can be used to bring out your best colorful feature - your eyes. When you arrange two colors from the opposite side of the wheel next to each other, it makes them both pop. So blue-eyed beauties should look to orange and golden-toned shadows and liners. Green-eyed girls look to purple or rosy shades for an extra bright look. And for the brown-eyed babes, practically every color can work for you.
Corrections: If you're looking to reduce the appearance of a mark, dark spot, or pimple, turn to a colored primer or concealer to balance out the area. So, if you're attempting to shade in visible blue under-eye veins, reach for an orange concealer. Have rosacea or a red-toned pimple? Dab on a bit of green primer to erase it. Just remember: put an unwanted color in its place by looking to the opposite side of the wheel to find its balancing match.

Leave it to scientists to burst our bubble. For years, studies have told us that chewing gum can boost memory recall, and as such, we’d pop Chiclets during noggin-twisting times: exams, high school reunions, Jeopardy. Did it ever work for us? Honestly, we can’t remember - and there might be reason for that.

A study out of Cardiff University in the UK found that not only does chewing gum not help your short-term memory, but it also impairs it. Though there are certain activities that surprisingly boost brain health, gum chewing isn’t one of them.

In a series of three experiments, 97 university students were asked to recall either a short sequence of letters or identify the missing item in a list. They performed significantly worse when chewing gum, no matter how vigorously or how lazily they chomped. Researchers speculate that the tongue, mouth, and jaw movements of gum chewing disrupt short-term memory (For a fun way to refresh your mind, try these seven brain games).
