Remake Fame comes out on Friday, with a whole new cast of kids as talented students. The number one reason I'd see it: the dance numbers. It doesn't matter what style, I am a sucker for dance movies. As bad as the plot and dialogue might be, when the dance sequence comes on, it's just so . . . fun! There's no better way to describe it, and since I consider myself a dance movie aficionado, I'm sharing my favorites.

TV Tonight: Center Stage Sequel on Oxygen

I can't believe this almost slipped off my radar, but never fear, dear readers: I finally did remember that the sequel to Center Stage is airing on Oxygen tonight. And just because this is a made-for-TV movie (the first went to theaters) that will head to DVD in January doesn't mean they're skimping on the good stuff.

For example, Peter Gallagher is reprising his role as artistic director Jonathan Reeves, and accomplished ballet dancer Ethan Stiefel is back as Cooper Nielson. This time around, we'll watch a new generation of dancers tackle the world of New York ballet:

Kate, a talented, self-taught ballerina . . . leaves her Detroit home to audition for the prestigious American Ballet Academy in New York. Despite displaying superior abilities and impressing experienced teacher Cooper Nielsen (Stiefel), Kate is rejected by Artistic Director Jonathan Reeves (Gallagher) in favor of classical ballerina Suzanne. A prodigy from a wealthy family, Suzanne has been trained in classical ballet since the moment she could walk. Kate then meets hockey player-turned-dancer Tommy, who has been accepted to the Academy, but still needs help with his technique. As Kate and Tommy work together, their growing affection inspires a new determination and commitment to achieving their dreams.

Center Stage Sequel on the Way!

What a great hump day! First, Ryan and Rachel rekindle their love and now this: Popwrap is claiming that one of my favorite dance movies of all time will be getting a sequel. They write:

CS: Turn It Up gets a little urban on us this time as Kate Parker, a self-taught prodigy catches Jonathan's eye and makes it into the American Ballet Academy. Sadly things don't go as planned and she's booted from the school - only to meet Tommy, an ex-hockey player and unlikely new ABA student (obviously) who crushes on Kate and gets her a job at a hot NYC nightclub, The Foundry. Well, needless to say, sparks fly and I am sure there is an amazing dance-off to end all cinematic dance-offs.

I totally agree that the dance-off is a guarantee - and I look forward to it. The original Center Stage is hilariously earnest and cheesy, but when dance is involved I have a hard time saying no. Of the original cast only Peter Gallagher and Ethan Stiefel will return. The sequel will premiere on Oxygen in November (don't worry, I'll remind you) and then head straight to DVD (I'll probably remind you then too).

It may not be a masterpiece but it's totally the kind of mindless TV movie sequel I kinda can't resist. I dug up the final dance scene for the original Center Stage, so if you have about ten minutes you'd like to fill with wonderment, just

Movies For Those Who Love to Dance (or Just Watch It on TV)

Do you feel that, too? That giant hole in your Wednesday and Thursday nights that used to be filled with glorious dance (and Nigel Lythgoe)? It's just one week since the finale, and I'm already suffering withdrawal from So You Think You Can Dance. My backup dance show, America's Best Dance Crew, is also nearly done. Meet the Euro Pop Princesses of the '60s: Yé-Yé Girls

Are the yé-yé girls having resurgence? First there was Megan's infamous Mad Men song and dance number, and now they've come up again in Wes Anderson's latest film Moonrise Kingdom. In the film - set in 1965, a year before this season of Mad Men - Suzy Bishop is one half of the lovesick preteen couple at the center of the movie. While her style is clearly fashioned after the yé-yé girls, Suzy's interest in the pop singers is brought up at one point when she shows her love interest, Sam Shakusky, her favorite album, Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles by yé-yé girl Françoise Hardy. Later in the movie, Sam and Suzy have a very entertaining dance scene on the beach in their underwear to her song "Le Temps de l'Amour" ("The Time of Love").

Derived from "yeah! yeah!", the yé-yé movement was comprised of female pop singers from France, Québec, Italy, and Spain. The themes and lyrics of the songs, often written by men like Serge Gainsbourg, were deceptively innocent, as the girls beamed sexy naiveté. One not-so-innocent song Serge wrote for yé-yé singer France Gall was "Les Sucettes" ("Lollipops"), which was really referring to oral sex. It included the line, "Annie loves lollipops, aniseed lollipops, when the sweet liquid runs down Annie's throat, she is in paradise." New Trailer For The Watch: See the Aliens!

The latest preview for The Watch is here, and while the first trailer for the suburban alien-fighting comedy gave us a good look at the bromance between Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, and Richard Ayoade, it was lacking in plot. Now we get a look at not only the characters, but also a little bit more of the story, and we even get a peek at one of the aliens. I mean, it's dead (kind of) but it's still pretty exciting.

This trailer definitely isn't as crass as the first red-band one, but I don't think its lack of crudeness takes away from the dynamic between the characters. Now we know the origin of the sweet neighborhood watch jackets ("It's like the Chinese symbol for shut up and dance!") and the group's skilled interrogation techniques. Plus we still get to see some exploding cow. The movie hits theaters July 27, but you can check out the new trailer after the jump.

Cannes Minireview: The Sapphires

The Sapphires has turned out to be one of the sleeper hits to emerge from Cannes, thanks to The Weinstein Company, which has already acquired rights to the film. I caught a screening of the funny film from Down Under during the festival, so read on to find out what I thought.

Who's behind it? Director Wayne Blair was behind the lens of the picture, which is based on a play by Tony Briggs. Briggs's mother and her family actually inspired the story. Chris O'Dowd of Bridesmaids fame is the leading man. The movie's four leading ladies all have varying degrees of fame in Australia: Jessica Mauboy is a musical star after a turn on Australian Idol, and Deborah Mailman was the first Aboriginal actress to win the country's prestigious Australian Film Institute award for best actress. Relative newcomers Miranda Tapsell and Shari Sebbens round out the cast.
What's it about? It's a story about a group of Aboriginal women who overcome significant obstacles in Australia to pursue their dreams of singing in 1968. When the ladies run into Dave (O'Dowd) at a local singing contest, he agrees to be their manager and help them get a gig touring Vietnam to entertain US troops. There are subplots about racism and Australia's "lost generation" (until the 1970s, the government stole light-skinned Aboriginal children to be raised by whites elsewhere). Mainly, though, there is a lot of singing, dancing, and '60s-era costumes.

Cannes Minireview: On the Road

Required reading for teenagers in America, Jack Kerouac's On the Road is now a big-screen film, and the finished product just debuted at Cannes. It's one of the most anticipated movies to be screened at the Grand Palais - read on to see what we thought.

Who's behind it? Walter Salles, of The Motorcycle Diaries, was tasked with directing the picture, which is of course based on the Kerouac classic. Salles has a long list of stars - at one point, I wondered who isn't in this movie. Sam Riley, who had a star-making role in 2007's Control, plays the lead role of Sal Paradise, and Garrett Hedlund is his pal Dean Moriarty. Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst have smaller parts as Dean's love interests, and Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen, Tom Sturridge, Steve Buscemi, Elisabeth Moss, and many more have other cameos. The production has been in the works for decades. Francis Ford Coppola secured the movie rights back in 1980.
What's it about? It's the beat generation in the USA during the 1940s, but Sal Paradise can't seem to get past his writer's block. Sal takes up with a group of friends who love drinking, talking, dancing, and moving. Dean Moriarty enters the picture and offers adventure. He likes to move around the country, not caring where the money comes from or which hearts he breaks. Sal's a devoted friend to Dean, and they travel the country meeting up with friends, family, strangers, and going wherever the road takes them.
