Directors Guild of America Nominees Cast New Light on Oscar Race

The Directors Guild of America has announced their nominees for the best director of 2007. The choices are interestingly different from the Golden Globe nominees, casting some doubt on whether the Globes will actually predict the Oscars in this category. DGA president Michael Apted points out that the race this year is wider than last year's: "There’s no big studio blockbuster among them, the way The Departed was last year. It’s a very open year." Check out the competition for DGA's big honor:

Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The most surprising absences here are Joe Wright for Atonement and Ridley Scott for American Gangster, as both are in the running to win the Best Director Golden Globe for two of the most talked-about films of 2007.

Not having seen The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, I can't speak to how deserving Julian Schnabel would be of this award, though I must say I'm slightly surprised to see Gilroy and Penn there in place of Wright and Scott. I also personally think Tim Burton continues to be shafted from these award nominations.

Scorcese Scores at the 2006 Directors Guild Awards

Last night, the Directors Guild of America announced the winners of its 2006 awards, which recognize everything from daytime dramas to TV commercials. The big news was a big win for Martin Scorsese, who earned the DGA's honor for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film for The Departed.

Not only do I think that honor is totally deserved, but it also bodes well for Scorsese's chances of finally taking home an Oscar this year. I was also glad to see some of my favorite TV shows recognized for their directing achievements. To see the rest of the 2006 DGA winners,

George Clooney Cozies Up to Costar Shailene Woodley Instead of Stacy at DGA

George Clooney posed with his The Descendants costar Shailene Woodley at the Directors Guild Awards in LA this evening. George appeared to arrive without his girlfriend and award season companion, Stacy Keibler, on his arm. Stacy tweeted just a few hours ago about being at a bridal shower, so perhaps she's sitting this one out ahead of tomorrow's SAG Awards. Shailene was decked out in a sheer red Valentino gown for the evening. Their film's director, Alexander Payne, is a nominee this evening, while Sunday's Screen Actors Guild event is all about the onscreen stars. It was a huge week for everyone involved in The Descendants, since it picked up five Oscar nominations!

Michelle, George, and Jennifer Light Up the Directors Guild Awards

It was all about the behind-the-scenes masterminds of film and television at last night's Directors Guild of America Awards in LA. The evening's top honors went to The Artist - check out all the DGA winners here - which further sets it apart as a front runner in the Oscar race. George Clooney stepped out to support The Descendants' Alexander Payne, though the leading man was without his red-carpet counterpart, Stacy Keibler. The two should be back together again this afternoon for the SAG Awards, however. Michelle Williams presented the documentary DGA Award to Project Nim, and she'll be back out in just a few hours for SAG. Michelle and George are both nominees going into that one and had more big news to celebrate this week when they each earned Oscar nods.

Jennifer Aniston was a nominee for her work on the Lifetime movie Five, and she did have her arm candy in the form of boyfriend Justin Theroux. Jennifer and Justin apparently snuggled close during dinner and slipped out to a private afterparty to finish their date night.

Jennifer Aniston Steps Out in Sexy Black for Directors Guild Awards With Justin, Not Demi

Jennifer Aniston went with her staple - a hot, strapless, black Dolce & Gabbana minidress - for tonight's Directors Guild Awards in Los Angeles. She flashed a big smile and waved to fans as she first hit the red carpet without her man, Justin Theroux. Jennifer and Justin soon met up to pose together as well. Jennifer is a nominee in the movies for television and miniseries category for her work in the Lifetime project Five. Jennifer shares the recognition with a handful of women, including Demi Moore, who unfortunately will be missing the evening after the scary events of the past week in her personal life. Jennifer, Demi, Alicia Keys, and the rest of the people who worked on the project debuted it last Fall in NYC, and that night Jennifer also had Justin by her side to help share in the celebrations. Justin and Jennifer remain attached at the hip and he'll once again be cheering her on, whether or not she walks away with the DGA statue.
