Movie Preview: Harold

"I'm going over the nerd wall and I ain't never going back." Those are words to live by.

Trying to guess exactly how the film Harold would shape up based on the casting news alone was kinda difficult. There is an odd mix of actors involved, including Cuba Gooding Jr., some Saturday Night Live alums (Rachel Dratch, Colin Quinn, Chris Parnell), '80s star Ally Sheedy, and cute young actors like Spencer Breslin and Nikki Blonsky in her first feature film role since Hairspray.

The trailer is goofy and sweet and makes me laugh. The idea of a kid with premature balding getting picked on is you know, heartbreaking, but I can't help but giggle at people mistaking the poor guy for an elderly person. And Cuba Gooding Jr. actually looks like he may be back on his game, as he seems pretty charming and funny in the preview. The whole thing looks sweetly absurd with something life-affirming at the core.

Blonsky, Quinn and Sheedy Join Teen Comedy

Harold, the rapidly aging teen.
Nikki Blonsky, Ally Sheedy and Colin Quinn have been added to the cast of the comedy Harold, all about a prematurely balding teenager (played by Spencer Breslin). Blonsky, in her first role after Hairspray, will play Harold's loyal, nerdy friend Rhonda. Sheedy, returning to her teenage movie roots (she played Allison in The Breakfast Club), will play Harold's mother tasked with the challenge of helping her son endure the teasing of his peers. Quinn, who I rarely enjoy watching at all, will play Reedy, "a drunken barfly who's a regular at a strip club Harold frequents."

Interestingly...
The movie will be shot at Blonsky's real-life former middle school, about which she says, "It's kinda creepy. I didn't have the best time there, so going back is definitely cooler."

Oh, and then there's this:
"Cuba Gooding Jr., one of the film's producers, plays a school janitor who befriends the troubled title character."

Cuba Gooding Jr. has a boner to pick with you. That's right. "Hard" times call for desperate measures, like Cialis, and Cuba wants the world to know that there's no shame in a 36-hour erection. (Too bad he doesn't realize that there's plenty shame in going from Jerry Maguire to this gig!)

What Love Is: The Year's Worst-Looking Film

Most likely, you haven't heard about What Love Is, and that's probably because the people involved are ashamed. Well, I'm here to inform you about it and to speculate as to how movies like this ever get made. It truly baffles me that, at the completion of this movie, after everything wrapped and the editing was done, someone sat back and said, "Yup, that's it: Perfection!"

The most hilarious part is that, at some point, the filmmakers had extremely overzealous hopes for this movie, which will open quietly this Friday. Allow me to present this nugget from the production notes:

"What Tom says to Sara in that final moment will not only go down as one of the all-time classic moments in filmmaking history, but it will not leave a single dry eye in the house."

Um. Not likely.

In summary: Tom Riley (Cuba Gooding Jr.) goes home to propose to his girlfriend Sara on Valentine's Day night, only to find that she's left him but will be coming back to the house to pick up her remaining suitcases. Problem is, Tom invited his buddies (Matthew Lillard alert!) over to celebrate what he thought would be his new engagement. So, the buddies arrive and, in their dudely wisdom, offer advice on what to do about Sara. Here I must defer again to the outrageous production notes:

As more and more testosterone flows and more and more alcohol is consumed these five men work themselves up into such a frenzy that finally when there is a knock on the door nobody knows what to do! Everyone freezes except Tom, who is forced to gather up his courage once again and open the front door to confront Sara... only it's not Sara... it's five drop-dead gorgeous women standing in his doorway and asking him... "Is this where the Valentine's party is?" (Apparently Sal invited some women from back at the bar to join the party!)

The many ellipses are not my own, by the way. I can't really stomach much more of this, so please, just watch the trailer and witness this cinematic treasure for yourself.

Tom Has Katie and a Career's Worth of Costars Showing Support as He Picks Up Humanitarian Honor

Katie Holmes and Connor Cruise were by Tom Cruise's side last night as the actor picked up an award from the Wiesenthal Center at the Four Seasons Hotel in LA. Tom earned the Jewish human rights organization's humanitarian honor, and the distinction was earned due to his longtime support of their Museum of Tolerance in addition to work bringing Nazi atrocities to light. He was especially able to reveal WWII abuses in the film Valkyrie, playing a German soldier who attempted to assassinate Hitler. Tom had friends and business partners from movie projects of the past, present, and future on hand to wish him well. His old Jerry Maguire buddy, Cuba Gooding, Jr., turned out, along with his Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol friends like Jeremy Renner, who's actually taking over the MI franchise, and Paula Patton. J.J. Abrams, who wrote the script for the latest installment of the action series, was on hand to emcee the proceedings. Even Malin Akerman, who nabbed the lead in Tom's new film Rock of Ages, came out to show love for the superstar. Malin and Tom's other costar, Russell Brand, was off jet-skiing in Miami, though, and couldn't make it. Tom was touched about the prize and made a short speech from the stage. Tom Cruise said of his humanitarian award, "It's a tremendous honor. For me and my family this is really a very special evening and I look at what Simon Wiesenthal accomplished with his life, what this museum represents . . . Our challenge, ladies and gentlemen, is to make sure that we do all in our power to see to it that there will be no more Auschwitz Birkenaus, no more Rwandas, no more Darfurs on our planet. That our children and their children may be free to live in a world where men and women are judged by their accomplishments and deeds rather than by their race or religion."

The Sundance Film Festival has been jam-packed with parties, red carpets, and star-studded events since it kicked off witha rip-roaring, blizzard-filled opening weekend. The Bing Bar played host to everyone from Drake on Saturday night to Kristen Bell for her House of Lies happy hour on Sunday. Elsewhere in Park City, Emma Roberts partied with her cast of Celeste and Jesse Forever, while Joshua Jackson caught up with his Lay the Favorite costars. LTF was getting a lot of buzz coming into the festival and was completed just days before it premiered.

Aziz Ansari took advantage of Sundance to schedule some stand-up, and he actually acted as Drake's opening act at the Bing Bar on Saturday. During the show, Cuba Gooding Jr. stormed the stage when he thought people weren't giving Aziz the attention he deserved. Aziz also stepped out to support his Parks and Recreation costar Rashida Jones, who made her screenwriting debut in Celeste and Jesse. Lizzy Caplan and Kirsten Dunst's movie Bachelorette hits Sundance on Monday evening, but the girls caught up beforehand as well. On Sunday, Lizzy joined Allison Brie, Christina Hendricks, and her husband Geoffrey Arend all sat together to enjoy a relaxing dinner at Chefdance. Bradley Cooper rolled into town late, since his film The Words is one of the last to premiere at the festival. Gisele Bundchen picked a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown with a splash of pink for this evening's AFI Achievement Award ceremony honoring the career of Morgan Freeman in LA. The supermodel joined the man of the evening, as well as some of his friends including Cuba Gooding Jr, Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves, Helen Mirren, Matthew Broderick, and more for the event, which took place at Sony Pictures Studio in Culver City. Gisele has been keeping things casual near home in California this week, but she turned up the sexy for this red carpet. Gisele is solo for the moment while her husband Tom Brady is with the Patriots back on the East Coast, where he also participated in his annual best buddies charity event last weekend.

Diabetes Awareness Has a New Face: The Rock

As the new national ambassador for the Diabetes Aware campaign, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson says,

"Get outside. Play a game. Do something active together. We can make a difference in our own families through exercise, eating right, and teaching healthy behaviors to our children."

Past ambassadors include Halle Berry, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Dustin Hoffman, so hopefully The Rock can continue to raise awareness about reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by living a healthy lifestyle. Diabetes Aware helps educate folks on type 1 diabetes as well.
