Crowned: The Shallowest Show on TV?

I haven't watched much of Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants, but this clip might be all my stomach can take. Mothers and daughters are supposed to team up to compete in beauty pageant-like challenges, and let's just say it brings out the worst in some. This irony-challenged and charming duo is too good for the food served up by another team (cuz, you know, frozen burgers are sooo gourmet). I'd give them the crown for most delusional.

On the guilt-to-pleasure scale for reality TV, where will Crowned fall? The mother-daughter beauty competition show premieres tonight on the CW, with 11 teams moving into a posh pageant house and competing against each other for the ultimate crown.

On the one hand, the feminist in me wants to get all up in arms about another show that portrays women as shallow and catty. On the other, I have to admit that Crowned looks like it could be gloriously over-the-top, from the "desashing" ceremonies with bejeweled scissors to the very presence of Carson Kressley. And I'm not above admitting that I laughed when the promo aired during the TV press tour over the summer; no matter what, it sounded better than Farmer Wants a Wife.

The CW Dishes on New Reality Shows and More

It's The CW"s turn at the TCA press tour today, with panel discussions with the casts of each of the CW's new shows. Network Entertainment President Dawn Ostroff took the stage this morning to chat about what's coming up for the network, which is entering its second year. Here were a few of the highlights:

The two-hour "Beauty and the Geek" premiere will kick off the CW's season on Sept. 18, and this time around, there's a twist: One geeky girl and one hot guy will also be in the running. "The experiment has evolved," the promo voiceover intoned, getting a chuckle from the crowd.
Remember "Crowned," the mother-daughter beauty pageant? It's on. Oh boy, is it on. We watched a promo for the eight-episode reality show that toed the line between hilarious and horrifying, with one daughter crowing about how she and her mom are the thinnest team in the competition and another saying she'd do a mother-daughter pose if Hugh Hefner came calling. The campy, over-the-top elements include a "desashing" ceremony, where the losing teams have their team sashes cut off with bedazzled scissors, and Carson Kressley.
A few remarks on some of the CW's recent cancellations: Ostroff said she has no regrets about "Veronica Mars," saying "I feel like we gave 'Veronica Mars' every chance." The "Gilmore Girls" situation was portrayed as a collaborative decision where neither the network nor the show's stars wanted to see the show come back for another season and have the ratings slip again. And "Hidden Palms" was originally seen as an eight-episode miniseries that the network could have ordered more of had it caught on - which, obviously, it did not.

More bits, including "One Tree Hill" and "Gossip Girl," so

Asia, the "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" winner, has decided to do a solo career instead. Heh. For this season, the show will be searching for members of a new girl group called Girlilicious, apparently bringing a whole legion of new Dolls into the world.
Like NBC, the CW is also planning to do green themes in all of its programs this season. Apparently, the "Everybody Hates Chris" episode will be called "Everybody Hates Earth Day."
"One Tree Hill" has a full-season order at this point, and the network sees the four-year jump in timeline as a way to get the characters out of college, where story lines can be stagnant and dull.
"Gossip Girl" is going to be getting its own online alternate universe, with the ability to shop in the characters' stores and go to their parties (and, apparently, do some really awkward digital dancing).
Remember "Farmer Wants a Wife," the dating show the network announced in the spring where urban women will compete for the affections of one tractor-driving country guy? It's going forward and has apparently already been cast. Someone asked how many farmers they talked to. Ostroff: "I saw quite a few farmers." Hee.
The CW is very proud of itself for being the youngest of all the broadcast networks, with a median age of 32. They have an executive whose sole job is to track trends among the target 18-34 demographic. In between sessions, they're explaining some of those trends on the big screen, among them Twittering, Female Fantasy Leagues, and Moo Cards. Moo Cards?

Hey, Moms and Daughters: It's Pageant Time!

This just might be the best bad idea I've heard in a while. The CW is casting for a new show called "Crowned" that will pit mother-daughter pairs of beauty contestants against each other. Sort of "America's Next Top Model" meets "The Amazing Race," but almost guaranteed to be more screwed up than either of those.

They're looking for both pageant veterans and first-timers, and the prize is $100,000 - plus, no kidding, a pair of tiaras. The CW promises that while physical beauty counts in the selection process, so does inner beauty. Well, I feel all warm and fuzzy now, so

read more I'm not going to lie: While I wouldn't in a million years enter a mother-daughter beauty pageant (sorry, mom), I think the people who do will be some of the best reality contestants we've seen in years. And I'm talking about an industry that produced Constantine Maroulis. Also, almost all of the casting calls are at malls in the South. Stereotyping, much? Get the Sweater-fied Hair Effect From Richard Chai Love

You know that amazing moment when you pull off a sweater and your hair looks perfectly disheveled immediately thereafter? That's just the effect hairstylist Kevin Ryan (for Aveda) wanted to capture when creating the lifted, slightly mussed coiffures at Richard Chai Love.

To create the play on texture, particularly at the crown, Ryan began by spritzing the brand's Volumizing Tonic on models' hair. After blow-drying, he applied Brilliant Humectant to slick back the sides and added Control Granules for extra texture. Then, right before they hit the runway, Ryan switched around models' hair parts to create what he calls a "jump up on the front." The result was pretty hair with a little "strange volume" - sans the static cling, of course. See shots of the lived-in hair up close and learn more about the androgynous makeup and nail looks now.

A Closer Look at Scandinavian Woodburning Stoves

Scandinavian interior design is one of my absolute favorite decorating styles, and one standout feature in many Scandinavian homes is the traditional stove that regally occupies a corner of a bedroom or living room.

Most Scandinavian stoves are column-shaped, ceramic, and white in color. Similar to the one pictured here, they also often feature a crown-like adornment near the top - a nod to the countries' shared history of monarchy rule.

These stoves are usually ceramic masonry heaters, sometimes called tile stoves or contra-flow stoves. Most commonly, wood is burned in the stoves, and heat is radiated through the thermal mass of the heaters.

This ancient, efficient technology is seen throughout the world in many forms. Some varieties include the German kachelofen, the Finnish kaakeliuuni, and the Chinese Kang bed-stove.

While these stoves' main advantage is their ability to efficiently heat a home, they also are a gorgeous addition to a room - much more so, in my opinion, than the American fireplace. Are you a fan of the look of these stoves as well?
