Creature Comforts is an underrated CBS sitcom featuring animated clay animals who chat about anything from fears and phobias to the art of attraction. The voices and responses of the animals are sampled from real interviews with ordinary people, so the conversations are unscripted and unrehearsed- which is why this show is so fabulous. TV Squad gives me a new reason to be excited about the Concert for Diana: the resurrection of "Free Love Freeway," David Brent's song from the BBC version of "The Office."

Summer TV's First Casualty: "Creature Comforts"

Remember how when I was first writing about "Creature Comforts," I mentioned that I was already mourning its premature cancellation? Well, this is the kind of thing I hate to be right about, but CBS quietly announced today that "Creature Comforts" is gone, to be replaced by repeats of "The New Adventures of Old Christine."

Sigh.

I'm baffled on this one because CBS already spent the money to make the show, and, according to the ratings reports I've seen, it was getting the same number of viewers as the "Old Christine" reruns it was paired with. Plus, it was only supposed to run for a few more weeks anyway.

There's no word yet on whether the unaired episodes will surface online eventually, but I certainly hope so. After all, I've gotten rather attached to these guys over the past few weeks (especially my favorites, the mother owl and her grumpy teenage son), and I'd like to hear the rest of what they have to say, even if most of America doesn't.

TV Tonight: "Creature Comforts"

It's finally time! My new favorite thing, the CBS animated series "Creature Comforts," starts tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific.

Here's the deal: The Aardman Animations team (known for "Wallace and Gromit" and Chicken Run) went around the country, interviewing ordinary people on subjects ranging from art to love to health care. Then, they turned those people into adorable animals (caged lovebirds, horses in a stable, a fish in a bowl) and told their stories through the studio's trademark stop-motion animation.

I'm really not sure if this show will catch on (in fact, I'm already gearing up to mourn its premature cancellation, just in case). My biggest fear is that people will hear the word "animated" and assume they're getting cartoons, not social anthropology. True, "Creature Comforts" isn't necessarily laugh-out-loud funny, but it is charming, delightful, and definitely worth a shot. To watch a couple of preview clips,

"Creature Comforts": My New Favorite Thing

Sometimes an idea comes along that's so brilliant, I can't even believe it exists. That's how I feel about "Creature Comforts," the animated series from Aardman Animation, best known as the folks behind Wallace and Gromit. The show - which aired for two seasons in England and will premiere June 4 on CBS - features interviews with ordinary folks about work, health and love. The words are then put in the mouth of animated animals that fit the situations they're talking about - the "lovebirds" in the photo at right, for example.

Here's what CBS has to say about it:

In upcoming episodes, interviews with hundreds of ordinary Americans from across the United States cover a variety of subjects, such as the trials and tribulations of doctor's visits and being sick, what animal magnetism is and what they look for in a mate, as well as the truth about lies and what it takes to keep a secret. Told through the mouths of animated animals, insects and other un-human species, they reveal their thoughts in a new and distinct way: an older married couple listing their ailments as portrayed by two lovebirds, the couple who talk about their great height difference as portrayed by two dachshunds, and two men who seem to be examining the bouquet of a fine wine as portrayed by two dogs sniffing, well, another dog.

Basically, it's Studs Terkel meets Shaun the Sheep. What did I tell you? Brilliant!

Charlize Theron Talks Stuart, Kristen Stewart, and More in Vogue

Charlize Theron wore a stunning silver gown for the cover of December 2011's Vogue, which will be available in the US on Nov. 22. The actress is out and about chatting up her upcoming movie Young Adult, which is the second collaboration from Juno writer and director Diablo Cody and Jason Reitman. Charlize spoke about working with Jason shortly after splitting from her boyfriend of 10 years Stuart Townsend. She reflected on what it's like being single for the first time in her adult life, and how she's now throwing herself back into work. Another of her projects hitting theaters in the coming year is Snow White and the Huntsman with Kristen Stewart, who Charlize raves about as well. Charlize said:

On making Young Adult after her split from Stuart Townsend: "I’d gotten out of a relationship, and I was in this really floaty place. My feet weren’t touching the ground. I just kind of turned to [Jason Reitman] and was like, ‘I feel like me again.’. . . [The relationship] was sinking, and I had to give it a fight. I really wanted to try and make it work. That was the priority. I wouldn’t do it any different way."
On finally being single: "I’ve never been single. This is the first time in my life. From the time I was 19, I’ve been in relationships, literally gone from one to the other within a month. . . . It’s been good for me. I’m a creature who’s really found her comfort zone in relationships. . . . It’s been nice to rediscover myself. I had to make a real conscious effort to do it - it’s hard. It’s much easier to lose yourself in flowers and cigarettes and coffee with somebody else."
On her Snow White costar Kristen Stewart: “She just turned 21. She’s a child. When I think about myself at 21, I had just done The Devil’s Advocate, and Keanu [Reeves] had paparazzi following him and Al Pacino said this thing to me: ‘If I knew that my life would be under this kind of scrutiny, I would have never become an actor.’ ” And I thought, Wow. I couldn’t comprehend it. . . . And Kristen is just living this to the max and still has a sense of humor about it. There’s this really lovely quality about her that just doesn’t give a f*ck. A lot of people say they don’t, but then they go home and cry and pop a Xanax. Kristen actually doesn’t give a f*ck. That’s what’s so refreshing about her. . . . I’m looking forward to killing her and taking her beauty. That’s what happens, right?"

For Sonja Lewis, an expat in her 40s, there was never a carriage, stroller or burp cloth. Or childcare. Or school tuition. Instead, Sonja opted out of the idea that all women need children in order to be fulfilled and complete - and now wants to tell the tale.

In her new novel The Barreness, Lewis explores the fraught and emotional territory of going child-free. We called up this Georgia-born journalist and writer in her current home in London - where she happily lives with her husband-and asked her all the questions you’d be too polite to ask.

Why did you write this novel?

I guess you could say I got married late (about 37 or 38) and became obsessed with whether I would have children. And I eventually concluded that being a mother wasn’t the right thing for me.

The previous generation seemed to stereotype non-mothers as selfish, hardcore people, and I wanted to make it clear that women can be fulfilled without becoming mothers. Exploring the subject in the form of a novel gives me free range in how I approach it.

Why did you decide not to have children?

You have to consider the commitment; it’s a lifetime role. As much as I love children, when it really became a viable option for me, the financial commitment, the personal commitment, everything I had to take into consideration . . . It just didn’t make sense.
