Crazy, Awesome, Geeky Computers Spotted at a Live Concert

I'm a big live music fan, as evidenced by my love of websites for finding live music near me and my dislike of tech-related distractions like texting during shows. While at a concert last week, I stood behind the most impressive sound and lighting boards that I have ever seen!

The lighting computers on the left were operated with touchscreens. There were at least eight different screens, and watching the technician hop from computer to computer changing the lighting as the show went on was mesmerizing. Equally impressive: the sound board, on the right. I wish I could have gotten a tiny bit closer, but check out all of the knobs, switches, and colored lights. I can't pretend I know what any of them control (unless there's a master volume dial), it's interesting to watch. At times I found myself more captivated by the lighting and sound techs than the actual concert!

First All-Female Hotel Cafe Tour Lineup Looks Awesome (and Affordable!)

For the past four years, the Hotel Cafe Tour has practically been a required gig for musicians on the road to breakout success (coincidentally, that same road often includes stops on shows like Grey's Anatomy and Gossip Girl, and, of course, Old Navy commercials). This year is unique because it's the first time the tour will have an entirely female lineup, sort of like a Lilith Fair for a new generation. What's even more exciting than the acts is how affordable it is - for the San Francisco show that I would like to attend the ticket price is $19!

Each city along the way will feature a handful of artists from the roster, which includes Rachael Yamagata, Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Priscilla Ahn, Thao Nguyen, Brooke Fraser, Jenny Owen Youngs, Lenka, Emily Wells, and more. You can see who is playing in your city at the Hotel Cafe's MySpace page, which also says that tickets went on pre-sale "today."

Come Party With Me: Impromptu Concert - Invites

Last week, while I was enjoying vacation time in Spain, I ended up planning a party. Actually it was a concert for the rock group, Cargados Band. A concert was scheduled, but I realized that the all male group was in desperate need of an event planner, personal assistant, and organizer. a Photoshop type of program that allows you to alter images
a printing store such as Kinkos I used Don Folio

To assemble the flyer:

Start by choosing your base image. Antonio, the singer, and I spent two hours searching for images on the internet. Cargados means weighed down and when pronounced with a Spanish accent, band sounds like van the plural form of the verb to go. With that in mind, we looked for pics of buses that were filled with people, alcohol, cigarettes, etc. While I could see a cool picture in my head, I could not find one anywhere. Feeling desperate I browsed my personal pictures. Earlier that day when I was leaving my best friend's house, I stumbled upon an interesting scene. Bottles and bottles of beer were broken on the street and I stopped to snap a few pictures. In the end, we thought it was perfect and we decided to use this image as the basis for the flyer:
Drag the image into Photoshop and cut it down to size. In our case, we cropped it so just the broken bottles were visible.
Next, we changed the coloring and the shading of the image to give it an orangish hue.
Then the we added the text in bright blue large, block letters (font: Jazz Let). Here's what it said:
Concierto Cargados Band domingo 9 de septiembre en ayesta a las 21.00 (en la ribera junto a plaza potro) colaboran: taberna paco acedo, dedi artesanta, yumsugar, rave mayorista, ayesta, el diablo, fruteria hnos navarro, dori y por supesto A.C. Zona Libre. Translation: Cargados Band in Concert Sunday September 9 @ 9:00pm in Ayesta (on Ribera Street next to Potro Plaza) collaborators: taberna paco acedo, dedi artesanta, yumsugar, rave mayorista, ayesta, el diablo, fruteria hnos navarro, dori y por supesto A.C. Zona Libre.
When we were satisfied with the color and look of the flyer, we burned it to a disk and ran it over to our friend Jorge at Don Folio. He printed the flyers out on large glossy paper. When finished, we took them and plastered them all over town.

Beyoncé Takes A Tumble At Concert

Beyoncé gave a one-of-kind performance in Orlando, Florida last night. She took the stage and hit the ground falling. It happens, but girlfriend gets points for her recovery. You know that fall had to hurt, and perhaps that explains all the head banging and hair thrashing that follows after the tumble...wtf?!

Exclusive Video: Arcade Fire Live in Berkeley, CA, 6/1/07

YumSugar and I had the pleasure of seeing Arcade Fire play this weekend at the Greek Theatre on the UC Berkeley campus. Though I've been to more than my fair share of concerts, I can safely say, without hyperbole, that the Arcade Fire was truly unlike any band I've ever seen live.

While other indie-rock bands use orchestral instruments like accessories, the Arcade Fire is, essentially, an orchestra - complete with violins, stand-up bass, French horns, and some other instruments I couldn't identify. What's even more remarkable is that the members move nimbly from instrument to instrument; one minute, frontwoman Regine Chassagne was playing the accordion, and the next minute, she was rocking the drums like a pro.

As if the music weren't enough, the on-stage visuals reached beyond cool into truly cutting-edge, with live feeds of the musicians projected onto circular screens surrounding them. Luckily, YumSugar took some video at the show, which you can watch when you

4-Yr-Old Rocks Out On Accordian

Cool Concert Webcast: Wilco's Jeff Tweedy

If you're a Wilco fan in Charlottesville, Virginia, tonight, you're probably going to the Jeff Tweedy solo show at the Paramount Theatre. The rest of us are also in luck, because Wilcoworld will be airing a live webcast of the concert tonight starting at 9 p.m. Eastern time.

I've seen Tweedy play solo on a number of occasions and have never been disappointed. He pulls material from so many sources - Mermaid Avenue, Loose Fur, random covers - that I've been tempted to make Tweedy Bingo boards out of possible songs he might play and hand them out to fans. Plus, he can be kind of a jerk, so there's always a chance he might say something shocking. Wilco's next album, Sky Blue Sky, is scheduled to hit stores May 15.
